Tories buying "Likes"

I see a problem with that as in Farage would have got in the pub 2 hours before everyone else and would be three sheets to the wind on the podium.

Hmm, I think it's got legs actually.

That might actually quieten him down a bit and give the others a chance to speak without being interrupted!

I think political parties using other platforms is probably a good thing. Political parties are failing to engage with large elements of the electorate. Facebook potentially enables them to reach out to people who aren't members of a political party, who don't watch the news on tv or don't read newspapers or junkmail posted through each door but do read their facebook feed daily.

I've reservations over party funding, but I'm not sure how you combat that. Limits don't really work - you only have to see the US where even more is spent on political advertising than here to see that it's too easy to circumvent limits on parties (eg the if the Unions advertising against coalition cuts wouldn't count against Labour's limit, and you can't really gag their freedom of speech).

What this will allow the Tories to do is better drive their narrative. The adverts won't necessary be "Vote Tory" but will be more subtle promoting issues that people are more sympathetic to the Tories on than Labour - eg lots of likes when someone announces new jobs, or the story of someone who lost their job during the recession under Labour but is now thriving running their own business; it might even be more cynical than that and unduly promoting stories benefits claimants, crime and immigrants to combat Miliband's attempt to talk empty platitudes about the NHS at every opportunity.

If the election is about the economy the Tories win, if the election is about the NHS Labour win.
