Top 100 Sporting Moments

Stats

aka Ian Poulter
Another top 100 here this time going for sporting moments.

I'll offer;

1) Raymond Van Barneveld vs Phil Taylor - World Championship Dart Final 2007

Nail biter which saw Van The Man down 3-0 at one stage. He pulled it back to level before then taking a 6-5 lead. Taylor then held his throw in the 14th set to take the match to the deciding set.

Again the match went with throw until the sudden death leg. Barneveld first 3 darts produced a score of 100 to which The Power pulled a 180 out of the bag. Van The Man not to be out done replied with a 180 of his own knocking the stuffing out of taylor. Taylor failed in his attempt at a 3 dart checkout leaving Van Barneveld 3 darts a double in which he got first time.

2) 1981 Ashes. Australia, having enforced the follow on, need less than 150 to win, but Bob Willis blows them away.

3) 1989 Tour de France:
Greg LeMond winning the final time-trial onto the Champs Elysses to clinch a 3,000+ km race by 8 seconds over Laurent Fignon (think this equated to 75 centimetres or something. Also a fantastic achievement seeing as 2 years before he had been shot whilst out hunting and still had lead hunting pellets in the wall of his heart. The Colemanballs-esque screaming of Phil Liggett on the TV commentary is also a timeless classic

The clock is counting down, 50m to the line. Fignon goes outside his target, he's lost the Tour de France

8 seconds to cover 75 centimetres? Pretty slow race! :D

5) Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle - a breathtaking game from the days when the premiership was vaguely interesting.

5) Southend 2 Lincoln 0 (Playoff Finals)
6) England 5 - 1 Germany
7) Swansea 2 - Southend 2 (Championship here we come!)
8) 2005 Ashes.

Surely these top 100 things should be SUFC free?
As much as we all love us, we're probably never going to feature in a regular listing of top 100 sporting moments are we?

4) Southend v Aldershot 1989/90, we thrash them 10-1

haha have very fond memories of that game

if you've ever watched the video of that game, you can hear some small boys singing from behind the camera, that's me and my brothers!

12) 1997 Masters - Augusta, Georgia

Tiger Woods announces himself to the world becoming the youngest ever person to donn the green jacket, winning by a huge margin in the process.

Golf once again had found itself an icon and a man that would transform the game over the forthcoming years.

11) Diego Maradona's second goal against England in Mexico 86.
12) Archie Gemmell's goal against Holland in Argentina 78 (as immortalised in 'Trainspotting').
13) England 3 Hungary 6 ~ the moment English football finally realised that it was no longer the king of the game.

12) The 'Rumble in the Jungle' fight contested between Ali and Foreman. 10 years after having his title taken away from him, Ali knocks out Foreman in the 8th to become heavy weight champion of the world again.

15.) India v Australia at Calcutta, 2001.

Australia were dominant in world cricket, and had one thing left to add to their CV as they sought to establish themselves as the greatest of all time: a win against an improving India who were notoriously tough to beat at home. Already 1 up in the series, Australia racked up 400+ and then dismissed India for under 200. A series win looked a formality, but VVS Laxman's double hundred gave Australia a tricky target to chase and Harbhajan Singh's hypnotic spin bowling led to a shock India win, which they followed up by winning the third test to steal the series.
