My 10 year old nephew comes to evening games and he lives in Wickford. Also when I first went to football when I was 8 (1986) I always preferred Friday night games as opposed to Saturday matches and I still do.

Love floodlit games
Yea I much prefer Friday night games:thumbsup:

Always had Friday night games, always enjoyed them. The club won't please everyone, but this is a traditional kick off time for us.

Swings and roundabouts - a lot of people play local league football on Saturdays.

The original poster is not saying play them all at home.

He is simply saying that we should play more at home on a Saturday. Personally I'm in full agreement. If your local I can see mid weeks are perfect. For me personally whilst I do all th homes infibd it a total nightmare.

Locals love them exiles hate them generally I find.

Football for my mind should be played on Saturday's when possible.

Its a double edged sword.

Trying to find a balance between giving over to family's and also those that play amateur football on saturdays or work on those days.

Its no secret that the club get better gates for evening games and fridays in particular are always well atended with a better atmosphere.

I praise the club for trying to maximise earning potential while handicapping visiting teams who have to make long journeys on a midweek.

Of course you can't always please everyone, but i believe the balance is ok for now although more midweek games in anad around school holidays would be helpful to those that bring young children.

Much prefer Friday night games - straight from work, bag of chips from the Fish House, couple of pints in the Spread and then usually a home win.

Sets you nicely up for the weekend...

However, I do agree that kick off should be moved to 8pm.

Ok

I'll act as devils advocate.

Why not have Friday night games start even later, say at 8.30 to give people who commute more of a chance to attend?

.

Good idea. That would at least allow me and other commuters (this is a huge London commuter 'dormitary town' area) far more time to actually be able to get to those games and therefore possibly also give the club a good number of new season ticket sales

Bloody hell we better not end up in the Championship again!
My Brighton mate says they hardly ever played at 3pm on a Saturday first part of the season when they were doing well... Less of a problem now ;)

Ditto with Espanyol in La Liga.IIRC,this season, we've only had one KO at anything like the traditional 5pm Sunday KO time(and even that was at 6pm).

Some people do take their children to evening games, particularly the Friday night ones and during half-term as the little 'uns won't be going to school the next day. A later kick-off probably wouldn't be welcomed by them.

Hang on then the game wouldnt finish until 10.45 say...Bit late to start finishing a game. A cup match that goes to pens could go on until 11.30pm.....

Bit late for the kids if you ask me....

You'd be home by what one? half one?

You'll never please all the people all of the time thats the only certainty here

Personally i like Friday night football, frees up the weekend to do something else

Good points of course and I suppose this is the crux of the issue at least regarding the timing of evening games - too early (and 7.45 is too early for me) makes life difficult or impossible for commuters or fans living outside the immediate area to be able to get to the game. Too late and less kids will come...

So a compromise occurs – change the Friday night games to Saturday afternoons to please the kids and families (and no problems with commuting from work in time). Change the midweek kickoffs, when kids are already less likely than a Friday to attend, to 8.15 – 8.30pm to allow the commuters / distance fans more chance to get to the matches?

And the last train leaving Prittlewell is at 23:05!

I am/ was told thats going to change when the airport starts the EasyJet service later this year. So by next season we should be getting toward a very late and frequent service to London from Southend

I am old fashioned and believe that football should be played on Saturday afternoons and not moved to Friday or even Monday nights. Of course, there will always have to be some mid week games to get in all the games. I do not get a season ticket any more simply because I find it hard to get to RH in mid week and I certainly wouldn't bring my daughter for evening games as it would be too late getting home. What really annoyes me was after buying the season ticket (or card) the club then moved Saturday games to Friday night and if you couldn't make it you were basically stuffed. Of course, then there is the issue of away fans. What effect does it have on them? Surely their numbers are reduced also?
As for later KO times, I don't think that would be popular either especially by the police who wouldn't want fans wandering about very late into the evening when they are at their busiest times in any event.
I think the TV companies in particular (especially in the top divisions) have ruined the history of the game. I remember when cup games finished on a Saturday and you had until Monday to savour the result (if you won!) before the draw was made for the next round. Now it is quite common for teams to know who they've got in the next round before their current round match has been played! (Arsenal & Leeds last weekend for example).
Bring back traditional times I say.

They moved a few Saturday games to Fridays. This should not have surprised you as this has been a regular feature of our home fixtures over the years.
