Question Tonights Blame

Where do you think the majority of the blame lies tonight?

A few points
Goal 3 was curled into the top of the side netting. Very few keepers would have got it. The perfect spot.
For me it was the defence and midfield. We have no defensive holding player. As for the formation I have always said and will do so until I'm blue in the face you play 4-4-2 unless you have really special players who can adapt. We don't. Barrett and and Francis were getting forward under instruction from the bench. It left us short at the back whilst was pretty useful in attack.
Individual errors. Clarke was not tight enough for goal 3.
Never play one man up front.
Defence awol for number 1.
Actually Mildenhall was not really a factor last night come to think of it.

The defence have been useless for the past couple of years. We had the worse defensive record in our one season back in the championship and last season we brought in Dean Austen, primarily as a reserve team manager, but also as a defence coach. It was obviously identified by the management as a problem area.

Unfortunately, nothing much has improved.

Bring back Che. We were never this bad when we had him in the team during our glorious back to back promotions. For those of you who loved to criticise him, go on, this is your big chance now to show some humility and admit you were wrong!

Do we not lose as a team in the same way we win as a team? Apportioning blame to individuals (and apparently gleefully doing so) has a very unsavoury feel about it if you ask me...

The defence. Francis, Clarke and Sankofa were all rubbish last night. We need to get a centre-back on loan. But a goalkeeper's confidence spreads to the defence and Mildenhall is not playing with confidence, probably not helped by the morons last night.

I agree and I don't like mindlessly singling individuals out for blame either. However, we clearly have a real problem that needs addressing and the only way we are going to do that is if we identify those weaknesses and tackle them head on. It seems clear to me that we need at least another centreback to challenge for places. A Lewis Hunt-type player who could also be a backup for the left or right wings wouldn't go amiss either as Barrett is definitely not a left back!

Which is why we shouldn't have released Lewis Hunt. Sankofa just seems a worse version of Hunt.

I've said this elsewhere but I have no idea what kind of a player he's supposed to be and I'm not sure Tilly does either. Going on last night's performance he sure as hell isn't a centre back, that's for sure :(

The whole team was a mess. Forwards didnt hold it up, wide players didnt track back, Sankofa and Clarke going for the same balls, Barrett not a natural left back and Mildenhall exposed and handling was poor.
But its ok Macca is back soon.

For the last two seasons we have had a below average defence. Barratt has been the ever-present in that defence and therefore the question has to be asked. Can we do better without him? I think we have locked ourselves into too longer a deal with Barratt and by using him as the figurehead of the club we find it very difficult to drop him. But I would. He needs a rest. Personally I would remove him as captain as well so he can focus entirely on his own defensive responsibilities, would be good for everybody. When Macca is back I would pass the captaincy to him, would give a lot more consistancy to his game and the added responsibility would lead to responsible aggression. But I forgot, Bazza is God and one rarely strays from ones original religion.

I don't see why Mildenhall is getting stick. He wasn't that bad.

The defence is awful. Barrett is not a left back- i couldn't give a toss if he's played there before and done well- he's not a left back.

What's wrong with players playing in their actual positions???

And fans can say what they want. I don't agree with people slating the team during the game, but they pay their money like we all do, it's up to them how they air their views.

Stop blaming the fans- it's the players who went out there and lost.

Apparently Harding was ill, resulting in Barrett being played at left back and Sankofa alongside Clarke at centre back, so it wasn't by choice that a change was made. I agree though, it's not a happy situation that we have so little defensive cover and I would have thought that last night might have been a good time to give Jonny Herd a go, especially as he's supposed to be our second choice left back this season. One reason may have been that Tilson was hoping for last night to be a confidence booster to help us bounce back from the Walsall defeat so he decided to go with his more experienced players. In reality it was anything but :(

I completely disagree with this poll - it really is not as simple as blaming the GK or the Defence. The midfield is the engine room of the team, if they're not up to scratch then you are almost certainly going to end up with big problems.
My view is that the communication clearly isn't there yet hence the problems conceding so many goals of late. Hopefully things will improve in the coming games however to blame only the GK or Defence seems a bit harsh at present.

Why is it that the keeper spreads uncertainess to the defenders. Surely it has to work the other way too. I dont suppose Mildy has any confidence in the centre backs either.

He never seemed to have any problems with Yeovile., thats why we signed him.

The past two seasons we have conceded shed loads of goals from set pieces, as far as I am aware (penalties apart) we are yet to concede a goal from a free kick or corner. I wonder what that can be put down to. The downside of course is that we are now conceding from open play, and the lack of a decent holding midfielder is definitely a major problem, along with the fact that we haven't adequately replaced Mark Gower. Gower baiters like it or not even if he wasn't having a good game he was always a good outlet for us.
