Breaking News Tom Hopper Signs

I’m in the camp that believes our downfall started with his injury, so what a full circle it would be if his return was the spark that sent us on a run up the league ending in a very unlikely promotion via the play-offs.

You can’t stop me dreaming..
Isaac Hutchinson's Dad just said on Twitter, if he could change something it would Tom's and the other host of ACLs at that time that derailed Chris Powell in his job. I totally agree.

Not sure about that. The Colchester fans in general aren't too unhappy he's gone. They say he didn't score much, and didn't create much. But we'll see. Maybe dropping down a League, and a place where he's happy, might bring out the best in him.
I think the point for Col U fans isn’t that hes not a good player but for the first time in ages we have different/better options up from with Lyle Taylor, Tovide when fit and now Sampson and generally only one of them starts so he just won’t get game time.

He isnt the quickest but that was never is strength. His positioning is generally good and he’s strong enough to hold off defenders so doesn’t need to outpace them for 30 yards yet get in front of them initially and he wins the race. I think his best attribute was work rate which massively improved when Cowleys came in and gave him game time and confidence.

By all accounts a really good bloke and popular.

Hope he does well, not being patronising but do think taking a step down (at least temporarily) might be good for him to get a run of games and play into some solid form.

Excellent news ! Welcome back Tom !

Good in the air too at 6.1" Be interesting to see Hopper, Bonne, Goodliffe , and Golding in the penalty area for Corners etc, along with the leaping Salmon that is Gus Bonne and Gus great in the air and the other 3 between 6 foot one and 6ft 3 !

Maybe more long throws from Gus as well?

Ralph isn't bad in the air either. Despite being a short arse.

Hmm
Not seeing much of that although a Col poster on here mentioned goals and assists

The comments on the Col U announcement seem to reflect the general opinions unless there is somewhere else I should be looking

I’m not sure if it’s the same at every club, but Col U fans always seem to need a resident boo boy in the squad. If you are a member of our offficial messageboard or fan groups on FB, you will see that Tom Hopper is pretty much the common victim, plus to a similar extent Tom Flanagan our captain.
The feelings on those forums is thank god TH has left. Some us can see there is a player in there somewhere, as I’ve previously mentioned his work rate is incredible. He also is very good in the air and will most headers he goes for, so expect plenty of knock ons from goal kicks and free kicks etc. he has that ability to sort of hang in the air.
I hope he does well as seems a likeable guy too

Really liked him first time around when he scored 7 in 14 in League One before that terrible injury.

He's not hit those levels since by all accounts and the bottom half of League Two is no better than the top two thirds of the National League. So I don't expect him to set the world alight, but he is a decent option in a key area of the pitch and another good character who works hard for the team and has plenty of experience.

As long as Bridge's corner gets into the area!.

Think the colchester fans in general are doing that 'didnt like him anyway' now he has left. if you see what the couple of Col Utd lads that come on here say he will do ok for us. What we lack is someone who is good in the air but also who can hold a ball up and bring others in to play. Bonne has done ok but wouldnt say its his strength where as Hopper will bring that to the table
Ignore the doubters Tom is a hard working honest player who will graft all day wherever you play him, no he won’t score 20 goals a season but his presence in both boxes will help your defence and attack. Remember Tom and Ben have been working together in training for more than 6 months, and a dozen or so 1st team games, they will know each other's games very well. As I said before if you play them both together you may see the real Macca, you had a taste of that on Saturday, with Tom as a hold up forward he will really benefit.

How dare you talk sense on our site. 🤣🤣

Much as I'd like him lurking outside, for possible shooting chances from part clearances, Coker needs to take our right footed corners. His delivery is so much better, as with the free kick on Sat, as is Morton for the left footed ones.
We had quite a few goals a couple of seasons ago scored from Miley corners too, not sure why he was taken off them soon after.

Hold on, you said in Nov '23 on the Hopper thread he was great with us but you wouldnt go back 😄😄
Where’s the inconsistency?

There’s a difference between hope and expectation and I try to not dunk too much on new signings so you may have to try and read between the lines a little.

There’s a narrow path for success for him and I’d have preferred us going down a wider path but I really hope he succeeds. We were in dire need of a targetman and I desperately hope he can be that player. He was a real favourite of mine. I do however have reservations about his lack of mobility these days. I hope I’m wrong about that. I’d like nothing more than to cheer him on as he fires us to promotion but I’m not currently rushing down the bookies.
