Tilsons tactics and post-match

Pattern for reaction to losses:

Phase 1 - Tilly got it all wrong. We need to (INSERT ONE OF THESE SCENARIOS: Scrap this insane 4-5-1 and play 4-4-2, why change what we do best? / Tinker with the usual 4-4-2 formation and go for a 4-5-1, why is he so unimaginative? / Try a 1-3-5! Nothing to lose. Well, except three points...)

Phase 2 - "I don't know why we don't play (INSERT ONE OF: a crap sub / a guy we've loaned out / someone who is injured / a guy we don't own). Yeah, because THAT'S the answer to all our prayers...

Phase 3 - Blame the crowd for not getting behind the team. Cue defensive rant from a Blue Voice member still recovering from tinnitus in the last game or lots of posts looking for Green Rep ending in "UTB!"

Phase 4 - End with a nice verbal assault on Ron.

And repeat ad infinitum. The perfect Shrimperzone recipe, and ready in a mere 40 or so posts.

Tasty!

Indeed!

I dunno, I know it's the point of forums to debate stuff but doesn't it get kind of boring arguing about this? We only ever seem to talk about the same 2 or 3 things (partly due to only having 7 players and the fact football is a more one dimensional sport than some) but - at the end of the day - we can't change Tilly's mind and he sees these guys train day in, day out.

Whereas we base our knowledge on our love of their picture in the 2010 Calendar or a particularly good night of Football Manager results...

I often think that - what is the point of discussing football - either on here, in the pub, at the game etc. There is absolutely nothing we can do (except vote with our feet) and at times it all seems so futile!

Talking about things after the event is different; I like analysis and think it's important to see how players are developing.

I just don't like that we spend more time speculating on the build up, mind games and gossip than we do the actual match.

Anyhow. As you were thread goers...

Was exactly my point which I put in my original post :)

You must see that Beefy? Chelsea had the players and the tactical nous to play that way, it worked for them and of course it wasn't negative.

Of course I see that and every time people have moaned about how Tilly only ever plays 4-4-2 I've pointed out exactly what you're saying. I'd play 4-4-2 every game home and away because it's the only formation that English lower-league players can play. Young players in this country aren't used to playing in any other formation. From an early age they are coached to win the next match rather than practising their technique and awareness which is why by the time they reach the first team they've been pigeon-holed into a position for ten years and lack the adaptability to fit into a different formation.

The fact remains that that formation doesn't send out any message positive or negative. Scannell and Laurent would have known that it was a 4-3-3 when we had the ball and if that wasn't the way that it was working out then that is a failure on their part. Played the right way that is an extremely attacking formation which is why Barcelona and Chelsea use it and Manchester United used it last season.

We played 4-5-1/4-3-3 not to be negative but because Tilson doesn't have two fit strikers who he trusts.

I agree in so much as this relatively new idea of 451->433 formation CAN be very attacking and productive if used with the right players.

That doesnt mean it should be adopted for that reason though and shoe-horning lower league players into it is a failure on Tilsons part.

I'd rather see 442 at the moment for its familiarity, even if it means Paterson + Walker/Freedman/Spencer upfront, than playing 451. Its not as if we dont have any fit strikers now, so there is no excuse really - certainly couldnt be any worse than what was served up Saturday anyway.
