Tilsons tactics and post-match

Not going to go over my feelings about Tilson again - yes, I'm glad he is here but I do feel we can do better for our current situation.

Anyways, as most others think too, i feel he got it completely wrong Saturday - 451 at home not only doesnt work for us at all, it sends the wrong message to the players and fans. Everyone starts the game with a defensive, negative attitude and its no wonder we performed as badly as we did (and I mean 'we' as in the players and the supporters who hardly raised a murmour).

Post game, Tilson and Macca bemoaned the lack of 'desire' to back track - with this in mind and Tilsons preference to 442, I think we need to line up like this for the time being.

GK. Mildy
RB. Francis
CB. Sankofa/Mvoto
CB. Barrett
LB. Herd
RW. Laurent
CM. JFC
CM. Grant
CPR. Moussa
ST. Paterson
ST. Spencer

I think Macca talked himself out of the side Saturday as he was part of that midfield lacking desire. JFC and Grant will happily provide defensive cover all day and I would tell Laurent to really push on into the opponents half and not bust a gut too much to get back (reason in a mo) as I think Francis has the pace to cover.

I would tuck Moussa in a bit more in the CPR (Carl Pettefer Role) and tell him to help in the middle when we dont have the ball as JFC and Grant will be compensating a little for Laurents lack of defensive abilities on the right.

Then having 2 up top is a must - Paterson looks like he needs a partner and Spencer seems to have good pace and movement.

I've put Herd in a LB as I believe he is no worse than Malone and with his long throw, gives us something different in the final 3rd when plan A isnt working.

This a model Tilson has adopted before and had obvious great success with - lets see it back from now on.

You are having a laugh Paul, Macca has now scored 2 in 3 games from That Midfield so don't see him being dropped. He's the only one to have got into scoring positions out of them as well - Laurent on Saturday apart.

cant even understand why tilson never tries 3-5-2 with the defenders we have as we have plenty in midfield lack of defenders and a few forwards to choose from and are much better as a attacking team than defending.

When Chelsea were unbeaten for four years at home playing that exact formation, were they sending out "the wrong message to players and fans"?

I really wanna say something but if I do I am likely to get neg repped for having an opinion!

Personally I would go for a 3-5-4 attackive formation. What have we got to lose? We are fighting for our lives right now.

were flush in the midfield so a 3 5 2 could work, with JFC and grant in the defensive role, however I cant recall a time we've been succesful with anything other then a 4-4-2!
after the last game i thought we were gonna go 1-10!!! moussa freedman laurent spencer walker etc all trying to push up, did smack of desperation a bit, I know spencers young etc but for the life of me i cant think why we didnt play him and paterson up front, wycombe? at home? come on! if ther gonna be our future then surely the more time they spend trying to develop a partnership, the better.
Anyway trying to be optimistic, maybe they can use this as a reality check, and a kick up the ***

Personally, I think we're so weak just now, I don't think we'd even win most games with a 2 man start...;)

Ospreys managed to field an extra player on Saturday, so why can't we stick an extra couple in?

Oh I know, Rugby is a gentlemans game and it was an honest mistake, whereas in football it would labelled cheating football scumbags I suppose.

One rule for one etc..... Makes me sick!

p.s how about 2-6-5?

I thought it was quite a clever satirical take on armchair managers who think they know better.

Totally agree.

Maybe start Freedman untill spencer gets his fitness up. Dont see the point of not utlising his experience if he can last an hour or so.

One of the things that really bugs me is when we tuck Francis into CB (esp at home) surely the club must look at things like the opta stats and can see how creative his play is on the overlap.

Agree with Herd: sometimes he just looks too weak and boyish yet he is no worse than Malone and his throw is a weapon.

I have no idea why some people defend Macca so agressively (no pun) his attitude on the pitch is highly questionable of late and the way he berates the younger lads (FL/Moussa this week) is unproductive. To be a leader on the pitch you must set an example and let your football and body language do the talking. Granty must wonder why he is always the man to make way after 70 mins when he is our best CM.

Grant is often knackered after 70 minutes, probably as a result of carrying Macca*.

*This wasn't actually the case Saturday, but he still look knackered.

he normally gets a nice rest when sitting on the ball during a macca booking or indeed just laying on the ball after getting hacked/nudged over!

Please god no.

4-5-1 is bad enough and our defence is shaky enough as it is without trying to play with 3 at the back.

4-5-1 is ok for away games to try to stifle the opposition but 442 at home is the only way to go....

Think that Chelseas attacking midfielders required to support Drogba etc had a little more to them than ours :)

Both formations are good, 4-5-1 is good because it allows macca and the ol midfielders more of a chance to score, but what i saw saturday wasn't that special. 4-4-2 is what i like better because we can support it upfront more, and spencer and paterson is their job to score anyway. We can't just rely on macca to score all the time, and i reckon if we play 4-4-2 against millwall, our new boys can get some more goals hopefully.

Formation looks ok but we need macca in their, he is better than moussa.

Was exactly my point which I put in my original post :)

You must see that Beefy? Chelsea had the players and the tactical nous to play that way, it worked for them and of course it wasn't negative.

Dead right there , system is fine if we have the players to suit it. Unfortunately when we were attacking it was 4-5-1 and when defending more like 4-3-3 !!!
