Tilson Blames Luck

Nothing changes there then, it was quite obvious we lack any kind of player that has that extra somthing better.

in the past we have had players with that somthing which makes them better then the average. Gower, Freddy, Bailey, Flahaven.

Now we have Betsy, Walker, Grant and Midenhall as just a few. If you look at the team we have now, there all just average players with no real special quality.

its about time tilly stops with the luck post match press conferances, and admits the players we have bought in and the squad we now have is destinctivly average!.

I thought we deserved at least a draw today, we defended like schoolboys but going forward we:
hit the post
forced the keeper into 3 good tips over the bar
missed a penalty
had an effort go just wide

A positive today was Mildenhall who I thought was brilliant.

Totally agree with your comments Josh, which is why I can't understand why in ashingdon-shrimpers post he says Mildenhall is average. Everytime I have seen him since he has been back from injury he has played very well.

maybe, but the team and squad itself has no one who could cut it at championship level. Other then mayb harding and hes on loan.

Playoffs is a distant dream with the team we have, theres not enough individual talent to finish a team off

What we deserved and what we got are two different things. That is now 3 league defeats on the spin, we haven't won in the league since beating Leeds, and despite your stats, I think that papers over the cracks of a performance which was totally devoid of imagination, guile and more importantly, confidence.

I have no isse with Mildenhall - in fact, since coming back after Feds, he is about the only one who is above criticism, but the fact of the matter is that we have a midfield which cannot create create enough, and offers little protection to an already under fire and under performing defence.

We need to bolster, and bolster well in January - and that's not so we can make a charge towards the playoffs, that so that we can avoid a potentially messy ending to the season which nobody would want to see.

I'm not trying to pave over the fact that we were awful, I could see that. We still created several chances and on other days could have had one or two goals. From what I saw today the play-offs shouldn't even be spoken about until we bring in some fresh faces.

The match stats would seem to bear you out as well Josh, their GK certainly made 3 very good saves that made up somewhat for his dodgy kicking in the 1st half.

We seem to have lost the CM battle in the recent defeats
and been out passed.

The ability to keep the ball for long spells and control play
seems to have deserted us. The rythm, shape of team
and balance of our play is just not quite right ATM.

Dis-jointed may be a better description.

The true value of Christophe and Sawyer is apparent.

We need the front men to burgle a few goals for us
and that confidence should come flooding back, but
we do need the box to box style CM's to feed the
strikers.

For me until JFC returns, Grant + one of Macca
and Milsom need to play in "the hole" more at home
and in tandem if possible to be the link man to
strikers and to bust a gut to get into the box more.

They say for business that it's position, position, position and, at the moment for Southend United it's midfield, midfield, midfield. In my opinion the return of JFC will help stop the rot but that still leaves us without the creativity that HRK and particularly, Sawyer, brought us.
Oh dear, I suppose, if we want to drag this all up again..................
Where are the replacements for Bailey and Gower!

Surely Jeff is Bailey's replacement, and I'm guessing the club thought Betsy would be Gower's - remember that Gower used to do nothing in defence though, which Betsy does.

You're 100% spot on. I am not going to do the whole stuck record act, but suffice to say that Gower and Bailey left a huge hole in our midfield. Now I can well appreciate that it's difficult for a manager at this level to replace those two players, but even a simple man can see that it cannot be done by using lightweight replacements such as Milson, who is without question a winger and not a central midfielder, and Macca who is less than half the player he was with Maher or Bailey alongside him.

JFC and Sawyer returning will undoubtedly help as we went on a decent run with those two in there, but how realistic Sawyer coming back is only he and the club will know.

To start with, I have absolutely nothing against Macca or anyone else in the side to be honest. I am just in favour of puting out the strongest side possible irrespective of personal player preferences. Having said that, I would esteem that the best formation in midfield this season was JFC and Sawyer, and that JFC was Macca's replacement. It was Sawyer who replaced, more than successfully, the absence of Bailey. Personally, I'd like ALL three in the squad in order to provide the competition for places.
As for Betsy, I can't be very critical, you see the side on a regular basis and are certainly more equipped than I to compare the two players, however, IIRC, Gower used to be, not only creative, but also contributed regularly to the goal tally.........something that Betsy has not yet managed to do....not with us ........and again, IIRC, not with Bristol City.

Betsy plays on the opposite wing to Gower, and although he dos do far more than Gower did in terms of helping out the defence, he does no more thsn Black or JCR did on the right side of midfield in terms of coming back and helping out the defence.

In terms of replacing Gower, we're no nearer solving that mystery than we were back in August.

On the balance of play we just about deserved a point but no more than that, oh and when we hit the post it was flagged for offside anyway.

The reaction of the team to the past three defeats will be important on Friday at Hartlepool.

Not the easiest of fixtures as if nothing else Pool are a spirited side who never know when they are beaten.

Will be a good test of their metal and desire to turn things around. Hope they feel as angry and frustrated as many supporters do and be determined to come out fighting.

Can't understand why Tilson thinks we should rely on luck? How about just outplaying a team for once? Surely if we do that for a change then we will not need luck. The truth is we played clueless yesterday and we couldn't blame it on injuries either.

think using luck is a very poor excuse. end of the day our defending was that of a conference team and i think most of the teams in the league would have beat us yesterday. performances seem to be getting worse rather than better. glad to see barny and dougie back, hopefully this is a sign of better things.

But if it went in, the goal would've stood. When the ball came off the post it came to a player who was originally in an offside position. Unless Laurent or someone else during the build up to the shot was offside?
We definitely deserved a point though.
