Tilly to Albion

A friend who's an albion fan in the know emailed me

"I usually get inside info from the club but the Chairman and his selection committee are being very tight on this. They have a board meeting today to discuss the short list so whoever said he is already on it is talking complete tosh mate. "

Well, I've got a similar source (i.e. a WBA supporting mate who knows one of the shareholders) who tells me that Tilson has already been for an interview.

Whether this is true or not I think is irrelevant, as a. I don't think he'll want the job and b. I think West Brom will want someone with more experience.

We need to move on & only manager who can take Tilson place is Alan Curbishley, he local & Brighton tried to get him as manager but it wrong time for them to to ask him. Alan said when he return from New Zealand that not only he want to get back managing in the Premiership, but also he want an crack at managing at Championship side - we are one of them.

Its would be an coup to get him - if Tilson choose to bugger off to WBA!

What a load of rubbish. Just because someone is a shareholder doesn't mean he has any inside knowledge. I know plenty of Southend fans, and they don't have a clue what is going on at the club. What makes you think this is any different?

£250k is an mickey mouse comps for Southend who will lose £3 million in turnover should they get relegated this season - we more likely to stay up if Tilson left & we get the right manager in (no more Ronnie Whelan type!).

You seem to be very sure of your figures. I think they're somewhat overestimated

You're right there Naps, what I meant that we lose more money at the club by getting relegated than losing Tilson for £250k which I think is an Mickey Mouse Comps.

The 250k figure has cropped up before. Its possible that Tilly or his agent had that figure inserted into his contract.

I hate to be pessimistic but I have a bad feeling about this.

Steve Tilson is as committed to Southend United as any player or manager in our history, however he is also very ambitious and is not blindly going to stay with us forever just out of pure love.

We are struggling at the moment and have not adapted well to this league. The fans have been getting on the players back, and if we do go down then Tilson's stock will fall just as dramatically as it rose. Now is the perfect time to jump ship.

The very fact that compensation has been mentioned is the biggest worry. Ron has previously very firmly rebuffed any previous offer, now it looks as though Tilly may have asked him for permission to talk.

The Echo would not just make up a story about him being on a shortlist - it is a local newspaper, it is not the Sun.

Backed up by my earlier post that the local paper up in Baggies land hinted that he's been in contact with WBA too!

It wouldn't surprise me if Ron Martin and Tilly have an understanding that Ron wouldn't stand in the way of Tilly leaving to join any club that pays the 250k. They seem to have a very good relationship.

Allowing Tilly to talk to other clubs doesn't mean that Ron wants him to leave. I'm sure Steve knows exactly how highly everyone at the club values him.

I disagree (at least in part).

I don't think anyone expects Tilson to stay with us BLINDLY and just out of pure love. Of course Tilly is ambitious, but he is still young and has plenty of time on his side.

While I accept that sometimes you have to take opportunities when they come, I still believe Tilly's best option is to stay with us and go as far as he believes he can go.

Go to West Brom and anything other than promotion to the Premiership in the next two seasons will be seen as FAILURE while at Southend, consolidating in the Championship will be seen as success.

Even if we were relegated with Tilly at the helm, I cannot see that his stock will fall as quickly as it has risen. He is still a double-promotion winning manager with a "small" and "unfashionable" club. That fact will follow him regardless as few of those people "in the know" would be surprised if we went down.

Agreed, they wouldn't. But you have to ask yourself who drew up the shortlist given that WBA haven't spoken to any candidates yet.

The only people that would have drawn up this list is WBA themselves. They could put anyone they like on that list, big Phil Scolari, Sven...anyone. It simply means nothing.

If Tilly had made a shortlist after having spoken to them, then I would be worried.

That said, I simply don't see it myself.

I don't think it is any different - as I clearly state in my post.
