Tilly on BBC Essex this morning

True, but if we can't afford that as a League 1 football club then we are in a hell of a lot of trouble.

I agree, but then we know we're in trouble and any savings that can be made, have to be made. We had 2 players from sunderland in the last month, this could have cost us £3 or 4 grand in hotel bills alone, thats a saving that we could have made, we got rid of Walker and Revell to bring in O'donovan so i would imagine we did pay a chunk of his wages. I am just praying that next week Ron pulls a rabbit out of the hat and sorts it......

I heard Tilly this morning saying that we will not be bringing anybody else in on loan as we don't have the money.

Now I am not blaming him, but 6 weeks with only 1 fit centre back in the squad is shocking.

As well as Grant did against Bristol Rovers, to play the next 7 or 8 games with him in that position is just total suicide. I really hope that I am wrong and that we mange to at least keep in the top half.

The squad is now tiny, and consists of :

2 GK (Midy and Joyce)
4 Defenders (Barrett, Francis, Herd, Sankofa)
7 Midfielders (McCormack, JFC, Grant, Scannell, Moussa, O'Keefe, Laurent)
2 Forwards (Barnard, Freedman)

We have 2 in on loan, and 3 out on loan, so in effect we are paying 14 players. (assuming we pay the wages of those in on loan, and not the wages of those out on loan).

Of those 14, Herd and O'Keefe are fresh out the youth team. We all assume that Joyce, Sankofa and Scannell are probably not on huge wages.

How on earth can we not afford to take a championship or premiership youngster on loan for a month is beyond me, especially as O'Donovan has gone back.

Maybe the rumours are true, and that we are days from going belly up, as to not be able to survive operating a first team squad of 14 (at least 6 players less than even a small squad), something must be seriously wrong.

Didn't hear the broadcast for obvious reasons. IIRC, this is the first time that Tilly has openly come out with the fact that there will be no new loanees because there is no money. If this is so, clearly Tilly doesn't see the point any more in masking the truth with statements such as, "we've got to do with what we've got." For me, it's a very worrying escalation.....
.....I am now understanding that things are as bad as everyone says.
This is rather like facing an exploratory operation..................the not knowing .................................... the fearing the worst. FFS, roll on next week and at least we may come to understand exactly where we are.......
finished with speculation and rumour............at least if we have some idea of the seriousness of our problems, you can, at least start to come to terms with facing them.
On top of all this Barnard is not rushed to sign a new contract............
.......well, you can't really blame him, can you! I mean, would YOU sign a new contract, at this moment in time???? God, if the worst is to be believed...........there may not even be a club there to play for, before too long! At the moment, I can't even derive any hope for the future in the fact that they want to offer him one. PLEASE, let's be put out of our misery as quickly as possible.

As for the players not getting paid then the PFA would have been involved the minute that they werent paid and on top of that we would have had a transfer embargo placed on us, which means that we wouldnt have been able to bring in any palyers at all WITHOUT THE LEAGUE'S CONSENT, including loan players.

I wonder what the delay is with the paperwork on Friend's loan?

Nothing stopping Barnard signing a new contract --- if the club goes tits up and don't pay wages the players can leave on a free anyway.

I've heard we've spent the remainder of the "loan money" on bringing in a striker from Coventry on a 6 month loan...

Hopefully, my talk of not having a club to play for is a an exaggeration. Nevertheless, I couldn't blame anyone for not signing a new contract when, at the very least, the future direction and standing of the club is in question.

One thing i do find interesting, if we really are in THAT bad a trouble, as in going out of business trouble, why didn't we accept the bid for McCormack (if there was such a bid).

Is it possible at the time of this "bid" RM still expected to get the HMRC money from somewhere else, and has gambled by rejecting the "bid"?

As good as he is, I know i'd rather see this club stay afloat, than watch McCormack trudge around lumping balls over stands.

Eh? Contradicting yourself there a bit mate!

Nah not at all. What i mean is, as much as i like Macca, and think he's a decent enough player, i'd rather have let him go and put the £200k towards the tax bill.

If indeed the bid was real.

The bid for McCormack was unlikely to include much money up front. I don't think the initial instalment was likely to have made much of a dent in our debts.

Possible, sure. But as far as i'm aware it RM stated it was a £200k bid, not a bid that COULD reach £200k in x amount of years. And surely, in those circumstances, i thought you had to pay it up in full. If not surely 50%-75% as a minimum?

Maybe Millwall offered 200 quid and a battered old van without an MOT,Ron then insisted the van must be taxed and tested.

My understanding of football transfers is that they are normally structured payments. Even if the fee was contingent on appearances/goals it is usual for the fee to be paid in instalments.

Even if £150,000 of it was paid within a month, that would still leave us short of the money for the tax man by half a million pounds.

Obviously without a doubt. I'm not one to condone selling our best assetts, but i'd rather be £150k closer to the target, with a possible negotiation angle, than being shut down.

Also, can someone answer, have Sainsburys paid us yet or not? If not, does anyone know if this will happen/intended to happen any time soon?

Anyone see this on FourFourTwo today about the best players in this division? Guess who they had as their best manager?

"Steve Tilson (Southend United)

With just 16 players in his squad (not including loans), Tilson continues to work wonders at Roots Hall. Despite having the smallest squad in the division, Southend are tenth, two points off the play-offs. Lee Barnard, at £0, looks a shrewd signing. The Shrimpers have only ever lost once when he’s scored. Hats off to Paul Lambert, too. It was his Colchester side that put seven past the Canaries on the opening day, but he’s got players such as Hoolahan and Chris Martin playing to their potential, and Norwich have risen to sixth in the table."
