Tilly does not trust the players he has.

Steve Tilson would rather tinker with team positions then play Jay Smith, James Lawson, Steve Collis, Franck Moussa. And lets Mitchell Cole stay at Northampton.

We have such a small squad, but are these players only to help out in training.

It seems to me that he cannot think much of them as he is playing team members out of position.

Most strange!

Fact....the players in the squad at present have far more experience at ANY level than Lawson, Moussa, Cole and possibly Smith.
They may not be showing it on the pitch at present but I really dont think putting in inexperienced youngsters into the side at this critical time is the answer.

Moussa - totally inexperienced at this level and would get skinned.

Lawson - still to lightweight IMO

Cole - I believe part of the loan agreement stipulates we cannot recall him until a certain period of time has elapsed.

Smith - Is clearly not cutting the mustard in the reserves and therefore is not up to first team selection.

I do feel that letting bentley and grey go last year was a big mistake, think they would have been able do a job for us,and for the money we paid them wouldnt have cost a lot.

I accepted Benno's departure at the time as I was certain we'd be bringing in someone better in his position - but we've not made ONE central midfield signing!!!! Benno would be INVALUABLE right now, a box-to-box man with aerial ability and physical presence who pops up with 6-8 a season too from midfield......what a grave error that was by Tilly

Seeing as Cole has completed his 1st month at Northampton we can recall him at 24-hours notice.

Ah, I wondered how long it was, cheers AD.

Then perhaps we should recall him. At least he's another option for the last 15 minutes of a game and lets face it, the more options we have the better.

Jay Smith is injured again.

In fairness, Benno couldn't get into the team regularly last year and was only very good in league 2. The standard is so much higher this season that we cannot assume players we have released would be any better than the ones we retained.

A player like Bentley, I agree, we need and fast. But would Bentley be that player? I don't think so.

but so is JCR and tilly only puts him on with 10 minutes to go, apart from yday

If Tilly thought that any of those players were good enough then I'm sure that we'd be seeing them in the team. Mitchell Cole is the one mentioned whom I would like to see back, but then is he too lightweight for this league? You can carry someone like that when you're playing well but I don't know if he's the sort of player who would be capable of taking the fight to the opposition. I think I'd sooner see Gower kept on the left and JCR or Bradbury returning on the right.

We obviously miss Bentley still though.

You're saying you'd prefer Clarke in there over Benno?

Obviously we'd all like someone in LIKE Benno but we haven't made a single central midfield signing!! If Benno had been in this side instead of Clarke it would have made a big difference to the midfield.

AD, I don't want to cause any offence, but if you read back though your posts you are making an awful lot "absolute" statements, eg

I find it difficult to read your posts without my hackles rising, because time after time you SEEM to be putting your judgement way ahead of Tilly's, instead of just offering your opinion.

As far as Benno, I agree with Beefy in that I don't think he would have coped with the Championship. My recollection is that we offered him another year, and he turned it down for two (or three?) at Gillingham. If he had thought he could crack the Championship, would he not have taken the year and done his best to prove himself?

My belief is the Benno would have been a greatly needed player at this level.

I also believe that Tilly DID offer him a year, but he wanted two. THe club could not/would not offer this - rightly IMO, so Benno decided to go and seek a longer deal elsewhere.

Therefore, Tilly did not make a "grave error of judgement", the player decided to leave.

I thought it was more to do with Benno wanting assurances that he'd play regularly and Tilly (quite rightly) not guaranteeing starts.

Bit of both I believe. Same with Gray's contract too.

Benno would certainly have been an excellent squad player this season. I'm not convinced he would make a massive difference to our current problems in central midfield, though. Last season he rarely played well in the middle, although he did a great job on the right, which is where he'd probably be playing now if he was still with us. While I agree he'd be a better option than Clarke, Hunt, or the out-of-sorts Gutts for that matter, I don't think Benno in the middle would make a significant difference right now.

i was just about to suggest Jason Jarrett but lo and behold, he's gone on loan to.... Hull City. sigh.

Hear hear!

Not so sure about Bentley, but losing Wayne Gray was a big mistake on Tilly's behalf!

James Lawson had a very good pre season and deserves a chance.

Jay Smith deserved a chance too.  Reserve matches and training are alot different to actually playing a game.  Jay deserved some chances to build up his confidence, just having him in reserve matches is not good for morale!

Thank you for that, just made me chuckle, which was needed after seeing the table on FLR just now.

Benno's first touch was poor. In this league I don't think he would have got away with it as he had in the previous two.
