Burnley game.....what a night that was, I think Derek Spence got a couple & got sent off as well, locals not happy that night, think about 20 something of us went up in a small coach?

Was on that coach. I remember the Burnley fans infiltrating where we were standing.

Yep, I was on that coach, too.

An old Supreme effort.

We played a load of Fulham fans in an impromptu match at Newport Pagnell Services.

Stopped at a great little pub in the Moors on the way home.

Oh God yeah although wasn't it Watford Gap??

Not forgetting our 5-2 win at Norwich in October 1928. Cricko was one of the ball boys that day so hopefully he can give us a bit more info on the game.

Sorry Cricko is quite poorly at the moment the doctor says he is suffering from "fivegoalfever" but he whispered to me that he was never a ballboy at Norwich, anyway he was too old. He remembers the game saying

"The game was played at a fast pace, and it was Norwich who were first to score, but shortly after Jimmy Shankly headed the Blues level. There was little between the sides, after the break Shankly headed his second, but Norwich soon replied bringing the scores level. The brakes came off the game when a Norwich player had to leave the field for stitches to a head wound, Shankly fired home his third, Len Clenshaw and Jack Bailey added goals before the end to record Southend’s best away victory for twenty years. Southend moved up to eighth place in the League. Team: Moore; Robinson and Brophy; Dixon, Binks and Morris; Woolhouse, Bailey, Shankly, Donoven and Clenshaw.

What a memory that man has

blimey, I thought my memory was good but yours is much better, spot on with Fulham fans but don't remember the pub. They were the days of the Phil Esdaile coaches

I don't recall the pub either - maybe us two were asleep!! Maybe we should have a roll-call of attendees. Pretty sure too that the Saturdat after was Reading away - when Paul Chandler ran across the pitch into the side where the Reading 'boys' were situated.

I had a couple of photos of that and Ginger Lee who, I'm sure by a complete misunderstanding, ended up in amongst them!

13th August 1968
League cup 1st Round
Bournemouth 1 Blues 6
I was away in France on holidays with my parents
Got an English paper 2 days after the event and just didn't believe !!
But it was troooooo!

The mention of matches versus Bournemouth reminds me of the match I attended at their ground in January 1974. They featured Phil Boyer in their side. It was the most one sided match I've ever seen us play. Bournemouth were all over us, Boyer was lightning fast and led our lads a merry dance. Bournemouth had a dozen or more shots on target and two dozen wide of the mark, we could muster only three on target. The final result was Bournemouth 1 Southend 3 !!. Daylight, or rather night-time, robbery!!

OK, I know its off topic but it's nice to be reminded of good memories at my age..............

This was the first match of the 1968-69 season, also the debut of the famous dark blue shirts, one newspaper claimed Southend played in the dark blue shirts similar to Scotland and at times they played like them(The previous year Scotland had beaten the World Champions at Wembley that team included Denis Law, Jim Baxter & Billy Bremner). Our line-up was Leslie, Bentley, Birks, McMillan, Stone, Kurila, Clayton, Best, Smillie, Chisnall & McKinven(Beesley). Goalscorers were Clayton(2), McKinven, Chisnall, Kurila & Best.(Att.7,182) In the next round Blues were drawn away to Wolverhampton Wanderers only to lose to a last minute goal by John Farrington. The dark blue shirts were replaced later that season, other teams had complained that they clashed with the referee especially under the Roots Hall floodlights!!!

I've said this before on here, but my old man has said this game was the best he has ever seen us play!

I was at the Aldershot 5-0 (I can vividly remember Steve's Wignall OG!) and the Northampton game a few seasons ago.

Supreme coaches run by Phil esdaile and or The Brothers Grimm. Happy days. Was at Burnley.
Was also at the Aldershot romp.
Also the Reading game mentioned and Burnley getting promotion at The Hall (one very nasty incident I remember).
Soooo many games, sooo many people ...so many memories.

I would love to see them play in those shirts again .

Showing my age here:

16th March 1979
Southend 5 Swindon 3
I remember this game as we absolutely tanked Swindon, who were top of the 3rd division (now league 1) at the time IIRC. Fantastic game, where we could have scored 7 or 8. It was a Friday night game and I was with my Grandad, who got me started in supporting the Blues the season previously.

I had to look the scorers up, who were; Andy Polycarpou scoring a couple, Micky Stead, Micky Laverick, and one of my favourite players when I was a kid scored; Colin Morris

Travelling to Southend games with my grandad on Friday nights at Roots Hall were one of the things I will always remember when I was at junior school - great times :-)
