Things we miss

I miss getting on a train from Wickford, meetng Pie and the rest somewhere near the Hall, getting in, watching the game, getting a programme, a couple of beers (although too young really) and getting the train back home.....all for less than a fiver!!!!

I also miss the stench of the North Bank toilets

And the sight of people standing in the Paddocks

And surging in the North Bank when a goal slammed in.

And "lets go f%&kin mental" 's!!!

And being able to bang on the back of the North Bank to the tune of........

"D D DDD DDDD SOUTHEND!!!"

And the North Bank tea bar that used to be under the East Stand, where the side gate is.

Most of all i miss the fact that it was a fantastic atmosphere on those cold crisp Friday evenings when the boys were playing well.

Great memories!

as a boy, watching the game, well the north bank goal end, whilst sitting on top of the big market stall down in the north east corner, and then running in to the ground when they opened the gates with about 10 -15 minutes to go.

I also remember that in the pit where the floodlight stands in the north east corner, amongst all the crisp packets and empty coke cans, for years, there was a single adidas football boot, i seem to remember we thought it was 'probably derrick parkers'..havent thought of that in years !! thankfully.

i live just off ferry road. (like everyone else, i guess,) right down by the river..

Old Frank was a good family friend of ours, he used to take the players their half-time cup of tea as well as do the tannoy, be secretary for the SUSC and so on. He got me a few signed balls as well, alas they were from the mid-80s

An absolute top bloke

The North Bank and its leaky roof when it rained really hard ...

Bacon rolls ...

My dad putting his coffee cup (full) and pipe (lit and full) on the wooden wall at the front of the East Stand seats whilst he was looking for something in his pocket and a wayward pass hit said items side on and spread contents liberally over the occupants standing in the South Paddock below us to much mirth and merriment from everyone in the stand. Funnily enough my dad wasn't blamed but the player who kicked the ball ...

Very, very early memory of an old boy who used to come in to the South Paddock with a hammer and a nail - said nail was placed into the wooden wall at the back of the paddock on which he then hung his flat cap ...

The firework displays on the South Bank in the 70s ...

For some reason every time I hear the song "Heart of Glass" by Blondie, I am immediately transported back to the late 70s with memories of the sitting at the front of the East Greens above the paddock with my dad who always brought a flask of coffee, his pipe, and a book to read during half-time ...

The Majorettes ...

Does anyone else remember the model planes that were flown around the ground at half-time (from the Two Tree Island Flying Club or something). The dullest spell of HT entertainment ever ...

Hearing the noise of the North Bank on matchday as I walked up the roadway from Fairfax Drive ...

Quite a few people have mentioned fond memories of RH with their Dads. Can I just say THANKS to all of our Dads who meant so much to us and introduced us to our beloved team, especially those who are no longer with us.

Check out the YouTube items, especially the Luton game, to see the old North Bank in full flow.

Memo for our younger supporters - that's what it is all about

North Bank

Oh the Jockey Wilson steward!

Sitting in the first row, first seat in the East Stand right along the north bank goal line, quality view and atmosphere.

The smell of rolling tobacco from the Paddock.

The gross toilets under the East Stand.

(Not RH I know) but going on the coach on away days with all the boys! (I would have been only 8 or 9 with my dad and two brothers! Quality days out)
