The worst ever challenge seen at the Hall

Derek Payne was always good for a few naughty challenges and fists flying..

Brilliant. packed a punch for such a little guy.

Thorpe for Orient right in front of teh dugout was probably the most blatant.

Anyone take Ray Wilkins on Barrington Belgrave in the Tilson testimonial? Given that it was only a friendly, it was a fierce tackle and put BB out for a long tie IIRC.

Quote[/b] (Flashing Blade @ Sep. 04 2006,10:38)]Stuart Thurgood on Cherry Bear (Bournemouth's mascot) in a half-time warm-up! As well as being the worst challenge I would also put it in any Funniest thing seen at Roots Hall thread.

ST had let the ball run under his foot and Cherry came bounding up to kick it back. Thurgood had also chased after the mis-controlled ball and when the two met head-on Thurgood put in this comedy, over-the-ball, two-footed lunge. Only problem was he got his distances all wrong and actually caught Cherry Bear who went down like a sack of spuds.

His sad, slow, limp from the centre circle to the First Aid box in the North-East corner whilst wagging his fist at Thurgood and obviously shouting the sort of obscenities that shouldn't have been coming from a man dressed in a such a costume was one of the biggest laughs I've ever had at the Hall.

Other than that, Andy Saville's elbow on Graham Bressington in the Judas Returns fixture. Heard the contact 30yards away in the North Bank.
I remember that , it was a classic , the thing was the stupid bear was in our half larking around as the subs where doing the warm up and to give you a clue he won't be doing that again in a hurry.

As like you said ST clattered into him and just got on with his warm up like nothing had happened, the distant figure of cherry beaer getting treatment from the st john's men was priceless.

Not particularly nasty but Warren May's rugby tackle on a Swansea (I think) forward was particularly funny. Red carded in the days before professional fouls

And an honourable mention to big Roy, who stamped on the head of a Newport (again, I think) player within a few seconds of the game starting. Another straight red for Unlucky Roy

Anglo-Italian Cup game around 94/95 time I think.
I remember Chrissy Powell getting sent-off cos Andy Ansah thumped some italian round the face. Then there was a bollock high lunge by Phil Gridelet before Grids himself got pole-axed by another one of the greasy cheats only for him to see red!

All that and if my memory serves me correctly the game finished 0-0!

Yeah but he was a postman and used to things arriving late.

Graham Taylor's foul which effectively ended Johnny McKinven's career is well up the list.

I remember that incident for Chrissy Powell being the only player not involved in the 21-man brawl, yet the only player to see red for it. Apart from that card, did he ever even see yellow during his time at the Hall?

I thought the whole incident was sparked off by a waist-high lunge from behind on Gridelet who, let's say had 'earnt the treatment' somewhat....

That was the best thing about the Anglo-Italian cup. More than half of our games involved a brawl of some description. The irony was that this competition was supposed to promote Anglo-Italian relations!

I also recall Sir Chrissy Powell being red-carded for peacemaking in that game, when 21 other players were proper having a go at it. I can only suppose that the ref got peacemaker confused with haymaker, which the others, particularly Ooh Andy Ansah were trying to land on their opponents.

Andy Ansah actually probably wins my vote for worse challenge at Roots Hall, I remember a two-footed studs up challenge when he didn't come close to the ball (nor was he trying), although even that wasn't as bad as Sada N'Diaye's disgraceful waist high assault away at Brentford. The only time I've ever chanted 'off' at one of our own players.

Finally, Grids was well reknowned for his modelling (well better known for that than his football), his look wasn't Steel Magnolia, but more 'Bemused Innocence' every time a ref tried to call him over for an outrageous hack on an opponent. What I loved about Grids if someone dared try and tackle him he would throw himself to the ground in an appalling dive, yet he always managed to somehow keep a straightface and a look of disgust when admonishing an opponent for daring to claim a foul after one of his own hacks.
