The turning point

Beating Col Ewes 3-2 away, I said to my Col Ewes supporting mate "this is start of a great SUFC side, I can see us stay up & get promoted the season after & do better than Col Ewes in League 1 by 2007" - he just laughed, who was right!

After beating Col Ewes, we went on a long unbeaten run & picking up some good win over our relegation rivals in febs (has we lost at least 2 game in feb 2004, we would be in trouble with tough run in from march & April 2004), this game boughted the whole team together & we played like a team with pride & passion.

Don't you mean Steve Broad, ex-Chelsea defender?

Goater's goal against Walsall, followed almost immediately by Flav's stunning save (the sight of the Walsall striker beating the ground in frustration will live with me for a long time!). Gave me sudded confidence in our ability to survive (

Another event that shaped our future... the day Ian Atkins decided NOT to take over as manager...

Well we will know Saturday around 4.45ish.

For me the turning point to these promotions was the league cup game at Wet Spam. It was the first time I remember seeing real team spirit on the pitch that season. Even though we were practically bottom of the league, we gave the spammers a tough game, and it was the first time that Barret stamped his attacking authority on a full game.

In terms of this season, I think it was Christmas where we really turned the corner, we learnt how to play badly but win, and again the team spirit gained by winning against such adversity at Hartlepool (yes I was there, yawn) was phenomenal.

In terms of recent club history I think the turning point has to be the sheer committment shown by RM, what a legend that man has turned out to be. He has been steadfast in his words and actions towards this club. I still won't believe our new stadium plans until we play our first game there (please don't let it be Millwall...), but I don't doubt he means what he says about it now, whereas at first I did.

Good call - if any team would be up for spoiling our New Stadium party it would be them.

When the Olympic silver medallist in the men's doubles tennis played for us? Those were the days.

Quote[/b] (Beefy @ April 30 2006,14:49)]We went through years of being rubbish and now we're back in the second tier of English football. It would be easy to just put the transformation down to Tilly getting the job, but for me the specific turning point is something that yesterday's scene at Swansea with their fans clapping us off reminded me of.

Almost two years ago Torquay were promoted at Roots Hall on the final day of the season. I'm sure you all remember it. Anyway, unlike Swansea, who's players disappeared down the tunnel until we'd finished celebrating, our players and management stayed on the pitch and watched the Torquay players and fans celebrating promotion. What a great psychological weapon that was. Watching another team and another set of fans experiance the sheer joy of a promotion was torture and I remember thinking how much I wanted to celebrate a promotion. I wanted that sort of success. And I'm sure that the players, watching on in the centre-circle on a hot summers day after yet another defeat, must have felt the same.

Anyone else share that opinion? What do you think was the specific turning point in our fortunes?
This is pretty much exactly what i said a few weeks ago about the Torquay game, and how our players watched on and took it all in.

Also, i think we will win on sat to sew up the league, bucause they boys know what it's like to miss out following last years f%&k up.

After Sat we'll be League One Champions....what a way to begin to celebrate our Centenary Year!!

Re-appointing Webb as caretaker to steady the ship, and then the subsequent appointment of Tilly.

I suppose the signing of Freddy helped a bit too

It would seem then that there have been MANY turning points. That particular one is undeniable.
