If all of the circumstances were the same, it just happened to be Southend who had employed him and Southend who now wanted him back and playing. Would you sign a petition against him?

Background:

More than 60,000 people have signed a petition calling on Sheffield United not to re-employ disgraced footballer Ched Evans.

Evans, 25, was convicted of rape in April 2012 and jailed for five years. He is due to be released in October.

The Blades have refused to comment on a possible return for the striker they signed for £3m in 2009.

However, Alan Smith from the official Sheffield United supporters' club said: "I've been told he will be back."

Wouldnt want a convicted rapist at the club no.

His girlfriend said its only because he is a footballer people are talking about it, well in the real world if you went to prison you wouldnt expect to go back to your previous job and getting a new one would be tricky. Why should a footballer be any different ?

It's a very grey area. Convicted of rape but did he actually do it? So many women cry rape and the chance the sleep with a pro footballer then regretting it could easily have happened. It's not as clear cut as the drink driving death by dangerous driving things

If he's convicted by a jury, then how can you say any different? A lot of women DON'T go to the police as they know that they won't be believed, and/or the defence will paint them out to be a slut.

The woman in question wanted nothing more than justice.

Would I have him in the team? It's difficult, he's done his time, but there is plenty of female supporters of the club who would see it differently.

It is clear cut, he was convicted.

Until that is overturned in some way he is a convicted rapist.

The whole case was very ambiguous though, but he was still convicted and thats all that matters.

A jury of 12 random people with no knowledge of rape cases. Swearing on oath is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. I know a lot is women don't report rape and he was found guilty but that doesn't mean he did it. What is does mean is the woman had a better lawyer. I was threatened by a bloke and had my car smashed by him but because his defence lawyer was better than my lawyer, he got off. I know it's a far cry from rape but in so many cases, the lawyers win or lose cases by making what the say more believable

spot on, think there would be many mixed reactions to a player coming back after a conviction like that and whether he is guilty or not as it is such a touchy subject I would think it would be wiser for a club to not allow a player back. like said earlier if that had happened in the 'real' world you wouldnt just walk back into your previous job in fact you would do very well to even find a job

It's black and white - he was convicted. We have a justice system to decide these things and I doubt any of us sat in the court and listened to the evidence so the fact is he is a convicted rapist, no grey area.

How do you know she didn't have a worse lawyer, but happened to have the truth on her side?

He's entitled to a job, as much as he's going to have to spend the rest of his days looking over his shoulder in case someone decides to (right or wrong) level things up a little and give him some further justice.

The law's an ***, but it shouldn't mean that following you serving your sentence that you should immediately be cast aside from any future employment.

However, the victim should be entitled to a % of every penny earned, they have a life sentence, so why shouldn't the convict have that passed upon them at the time of sentencing?

It's lawyers that win cases, not the truth. Happened so many times. I am not saying he didn't rape her but with a drink drive case It's open and shut. In some rape cases, not so clear. As you all say though, he was convicted so he MUST have done it.

There have been a fair few cases over the years where convictions have been overturned years later due to advances in technology or new evidence. This lad has twice asked for a review. I'd nor be surprised if he pursued this when released.

But in the real world it does.

Try getting a job with a criminal record, it wouldnt be easy, we would discard anyone who applied with a conviction of rape, most would.

You cant base judgements on what might happen in the future, at present he was convicted in our judical system, thats all that matters.

If he had been convicted of murder you wouldnt be using this same angle, and people have had murder convictions quashed as well.

He is guilty, thats the only thing that counts at the moment.

I wholeheartedly agree. If you've got two outstanding candidates with nothing to split them and then find out one of them was nicked a few years ago for anything you know where it's going!

Without doubt the most disgusting statement I have read on this forum. You should be ashamed of yourself!!!
