A man, a plan, a canal, Panama is the longest palindrome, in English. Unless you can do better.

The sixth sheikhs sheep is sick is, apparently, the most difficult tongue-twister in English.

You sure? This one is 17,259 characters long, and still going:-

Peter Norvig

Apparently the longest single word palindrome is REDIVIDER.

The Dambusters raid was largely unsuccessful, despite the film version.

56 men, some of the RAFs finest were lost in the raids, and the damage to the dams was largely insignificant, and industrial work was not affected in any significant way in teh long term. The biggest dam, which would have caused major dispution had it been breached, was not breached. Of the 1200 people killed in the raid, half were labour camp workers seized from Eastern Europe by the Nazi's.

So all the 'heroes' who put their arms out and sing the Dambusters theme when England play Germany, would be far better off whistling the theme tune to Some Mothers Do 'ave 'em.

Add to that, if he had been a German, Bomber Harris would be regarded as a war criminal.

Apparently the longest single word palindrome is REDIVIDER.

Except, it doesn't appear in the OED2 and an Internet search in March 2000 failed to find a single use of the word, except for its appearance in lists of palindromes...

TATTARRATTAT is the longest palindrome in the OED2. The OED2 shows a single use in 1922 by James Joyce in Ulysses: "I knew his tattarrattat at the door."

some people may already know this but Soup Tins now have ringpulls so after having spent 5 minutes looking for a tin opener, imagine my delight to find i didnt need one.
