Pretty much everything by The Smiths

Now just turned 40! still like all the above and much much more.

To keep the birthing theme going, my first child was born to Brimful of Asha, Cornershop; somemthing by The Lighthouse Family and (appropriately) Lucky Man by The Verve. My second child was born to Johann Pachebel's Canon in D Major.

Crumbs... that's probably only 1% of the albums that I've ever owned and listened to, or the music that I've sung or played!

Some of those tracks are connected to happy, sad or important memories in my life, and will therefore remain indelibly on my mind until (I hope) my dying day. Other tracks are more representative of an era - especially the ones when I was a Goth - and yet now seem as if they belong to another life. Yet I still recall how important they felt to me at that time... it was a watershed in my life.

As for how I remember it... I dunno. My brain is a bit like a sponge for facts, music, sounds, smells, emotions etc... I guess that's how I remember it!

First ever record I remember owning was a handed down 7 inch single - Get Back - The Beatles. I can still remember the record label, with the full green apple on one side and the half apple on the other. I will also never forget the look and smell (strangely I know) of the (also handed down) old mono record player I used to play it on. This is one of my earliest memories.

I also remember the first album I bought with my own money - Queen - Greatest Hits and the first concert I ever went to was at around 11 when for a Christmas present I went with my Dad and Uncle to see The Police tour Synchronicity at Wembley Arena.

Then the first band that was all mine (not influenced by Dad), Madness and the album Absolutely.

Then late school years and into college and discovering The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses which of course led on to the whole baggy thing and particularly Happy Mondays - Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches. Then along came Nirvana - Nevermind and I went from baggy to grunge for a while.

The next big thing to hit was Oasis - Definitely Maybe and then the whole Brit-Pop era, particularly Blur - Parklife and Pulp - Different Class. By then I was a commited indie-kid and bought CDs in vast numbers, many bands stand out but Kenickie - At The Club evokes a certain time whenever I play it (which is regularly as it's a great slice of guitar pop).

I think that it's hard now to say which of the more current stuff will class as a soundtrack as I think it's only with hindsight that you look back and realise what really brings those memories flooding back whenever it's played. This is also only a very small cross section of the music that could fit into this category.

I know however that two songs will always live with me as they will always be linked to two specific events, Fire In My Heart - Super Furry Animals which was the first dance at my wedding and (again) Amarillo - Tony Christie as it was just omni-present when my daughter was born last year.

Ron - Talking of wedding's we've decided to have Primal Scream - Moving on up when exiting the ceremony this august(my choice!)

Soundtrack of my life (74-now)

0-7 Muppets Album
8-11 Queen Greatest Hits
11-13 Gloria Estefan
14-15 No idea lost, can't remember think the old man didn't give me pocket money for two years, something about burning down the garage
16-19 Carter USM, Stone Roses, Inspirals, Happy Mondays, Pink Floyd, More Queen!
20-22 University years Portishead -Dummy, Massive Attack, Julian Cope, Bowie, Velvet Underground,
22-27 Everything new old, borrowed stolen!
28-32 Ipod, MP3s its got a little confusing now.

Today (as its more relevant)

Architecture in Helsinki, High On Fire, Fleeing new york (check them out!!!!!!!), Bloc Party, Wolfmother, The Who (baba o'reilly) and some gwen stefani (in the car)

My songs are very random.

0-9 The East London Years
A-ha, Clash, Seal, Erasure, Duran Duran, Madness, Adam and the Ants, Spandau Ballet, Human League, Beats International, Haircut 100 and Nick Kershaw.

10-20 The School/College Years
Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Bon Jovi, Savage Garden, Boyzone, Take That, Incubus, Green Day, Linkin Park, Queens of the Stone Age, Rammstein, Less than Jake and Feeder.

21+ The Uni Years
Michael Buble, Coldplay, Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, InMe, Funeral for a Friend and Franz Ferdinand.

That worries me now when I think about what I used to listen to.... There's many more I could name, but I wouldnt want to embarrass myself.
