The Road to Wembley

If a National League team enters the Isuzu FA Trophy at the Third Round Proper and wins the competition, here's the total prize money they would earn by progressing through and winning each stage:

  • Third Round Proper: £4,500
  • Fourth Round Proper: £5,250
  • Fifth Round Proper: £6,000
  • Quarter-Final: £7,500
  • Semi-Final: £15,000
  • Final (Winner): £60,000

Total: £98,250

This amount represents the cumulative prize money for winning all rounds from the point of entry to the final victory.

Not to be sniffed at:

If Southend United were to reach the FA Trophy final at Wembley and brought around 20,000 fans, while their opponent brought approximately 10,000 fans, here's how the revenue might be distributed based on typical arrangements:

Revenue Calculation Assumptions

  1. Total Attendance:
    • 30,000 fans (20,000 Southend + 10,000 opponent).
  2. Average Ticket Price:
Let's assume an average ticket price of £20 (a common figure for non-league finals).
  3. Gross Ticket Revenue:
    • 30,000 fans × £20 = £600,000.
  4. Net Revenue:
After match expenses (e.g., Wembley operational costs, stewarding, security), about 75%-80% of the gross revenue typically becomes net revenue.
    • Net Revenue ≈ £450,000 to £480,000.

Revenue Distribution

In most FA competitions, the net ticket revenue is split 50/50 between the two finalists, regardless of the number of fans each club brings.

  • Southend's Share: £225,000 to £240,000.
  • Opponent's Share: £225,000 to £240,000.

So a nice 300-350k for winning the thing. Could buy you a couple of strikers from Luton ….

Do you ever get the feeling that @Yorkshire Blue wants to go to Wembley?

The revenue distribution is not quite as straight forward, because the FA Trophy final and F A Vase final are played on the same day, so you get 2 games for the one admission price.

There was someone on here last May who went in the neutral area and enjoyed the day and would go again, maybe they can pop on and confirm ticket prices they paid and the split might be 25% each way, or weighted pro rata between NL or the lower level teams, I looked on the FA site but can't find any info there.

I went in the Wakering end last year and pretty sure I paid my friend back £30.00 who purchased my ticket. We all enjoyed the day out, although I didn't personally stay for the second game.

I went in the neutral club wembley section and I paid £30 for both games. Fantastic value and a great day out.

So according to those figures thats £9750 prize money to date plus another £6000 for a win on 1st Feb

Every little bit helps

and Thats of course without gate monies etc
Entering in the 3rd Round.

So to date prize money - £9.750

A win on 1st feb, would be another £6,000

and of course gate monies on top, as you quite rightly said, less overheads.

Any surplus unbudgeted income, which we haven't had in a few years.
