The Ratings Thread

Thought Barrett, Bailey, Francis & Gower were superb last night.

Disappointed by Tommy Black. Thought he should have been taken off a little earlier.

As an aside, I know Flahavan has been the subject of some debate recently, but I would much rather have him in goal than say, Kuipers.

Amazing what a little bit of confidence can do for a team.

Was impressed with all areas yesterday, but especially the now formidable partnership of Bailey and Macca, they add so much to our team and their work rate really is second to none. To see Macca defending so far up the pitch at the end of the game is a tribute to something Tilly has changed about this club since he had his first pre season - fitness !!

The Team looks so strong going into the last 3rd of all games at the moment , alot stronger than the opposition - this was also a large part of the season when we got promoted the last time via the play offs and I think that this added extra should not be overlooked.

I agree that Black has disappointed the last couple of games, however I enjoy seeing a settled side, especially knowing that we have someone of Grants ability to come on and change a game at the drop of a hat.

Bring on whoever next ....... they will be wary of facing us, and rightly so !!

To be fair to Tommy Black, I thought he did loads of running off the ball and dragging defenders put of position, and it was inevitable that with the other 3 midfielders performing out of their skins that he was going to look poor alongside them. I thought everyone did fantastically well last night, can't believe it wasn't that long ago we were calling for Macca to be dropped for Maher! He was one of 3 joint MOMs for me last night, with Gower and Barrett, I'd find it hard to seperate them.

Flavs - 7 - didn't have a great deal to do, made a couple of good saves and came out to punch a couple of times too.

Francis - 8 - another good performance, surely our most improved player?

Mulgrew - 7.5 - still getting better, has a touch of class about him and whips free kicks in superbly.

Barrett - 9 - Great goal. Dominated at the back, and a great captains performance, shouted when he needed to, took players away from confrantations, etc superb.

Clarke - 7.5 - solid display, made one major slip up but recovered it.

Macca - 7.5 - fiery committed, ran and ran

Bailey - 8.5 - excellent as ever, the subtleties in his game really impress

Gower - 9 MOM - back to his best. great runs, good crosses.

Black - 6.5 - first half did well getting forward and covering, 2nd half faded - as he often does - in his defensive duties

Walker - 7 - held the ball up well, sometimes he tries to keep it too long but good performance just needs to turn and shoot sometimes.

Barnard - 7 - didn't get many chances, but played wholeheartedly.

subs
Grant - 7 - excellent replacement for black, really shored things up
Revell - 6.5 - just back from injury, tried but didn't get much
McDonald 6.5 - not on for long could have scored though

Think i would put Grant in front of Black for the next game

I also agree that Black has been the weakest player of late, but I really suggesting that the first 11 is changed after the winning run we are on?

No way. You just dont change the team, when playing like we are.

Dont get me wrong, I have been really disappointed with him, the last few weeks, but he had those 4 awesome games, which really helped kick everyone else on, and is now being overshadowed, but I still would not change the, I dont think it sends out the right signals. At the moment, as long as he changes sides, and moves when Gower tells him to, thats good enough

Flavs - Nothing much to do 7.5
Muligrew - Confident and sensible 7.5
Barrett - Fantastic Goal, reliable 8
Clarke - Defended well, distribution poor at times 7
Francis - Defended okay, little slow 7
Black - Never in the game 6.5
Bailey - Quiet at times, average 7
Macca - Ran all over the park 8
Gower - Been kicked up the ****, best performance in ages 8.5 MOM
Walker - Keeps tripping over the ball 7
Barnard - Did he play???? very quiet 7

Subs
Grant - Did excellent, maybe time to swap him for Black 7.5
Revell - Needs more Games 6.5
MacDonald - Not on long enough, still looks naff. Time to go 6.5

Ref - Should of booked more of there players 6.5

Overall - Good performance 2 great goals, but should of been more. My only worry now is cover at the back if we get injuries or suspensions.

The Brighton defence were all over Barney all night.

I think other sides up there will fear us in the play-offs, when you have a spine of the team right through the middle as competitive as Bailey, Macca, Clarkey and Super AB it's a massive advantage.

Both full-backs, Franno in particular, have been excellent recently and I believe Mulgrew settling in has re-ignited Gower's game. It's taken time for him to adjust to playing with someone other than Hammell but they now seem to have a good understanding down that left side.

For me, the most important game to win is the Port Vale one as we want to go in to the play offs on the back of a win

my main worry for black is that he leaves francis in the **** a lot of the time. last time at one point francis had to go to the ball to close their player down and blacks man just strolled in for an over-lap. black didnt track back just let him go past him. luckily we got away with it but barrett went physco at black. this is deffinately needs to be sorted. as a winger you have to defend as well as go forward.

Fantastic all round performance last night. The confidence is oozing through the players at the moment, and long may it continue.

Agree with pretty much everything that has been said so far but I wanted to make a special mentioned about Gower.

At one stage he chased the ball for about 2 minutes none stop. His passing, crossing, shooting and everything about his game was spot on. He is back to his superb best and showed that on his day his arguably our best player. Long may it continue.

A further point about Gower. Last night's performance is what you get from him when his confidence is sky high - maybe something for the boo boys to consider?

Flahavan 7: Frustrating couple of moments from him last night - He made one really good claim when he came for a cross, yet 5 mins later a corner was whipped in and Murray headed over from 4 yards, if that. I'm still nervous as hell at corners, especially when it seems he's relying on Clarkey to head out from inside the 6 yard box.

Francis 8: Fantastic again. Offers 5 times the threat going forward then a certain right "winger" does.

Clarke 7: Pretty good. Exquisite flick for Barrett's goal. One moment in the 2nd half summed Clarkey up though. He headed away a corner from inside the 6 yard box, charged out and blocked the follow up shot, then blocked the 2nd shot in quick succession.

Barrett 7.5: Been better than in recent weeks and a great goal.

Mulgrew 7: Decent. Set piece delivery outstanding again. Get him on corners Tilly!

Black 5.5: Utter tosh again. Couple of nice flicks but added zilch going forward and didn't beat the left back once or look like beating him. Interestingly his team mates are becoming fed up with his lack of tracking back and are all making a point of having a go at him and or moaning to the management. Unfortunately they don't reply back and Black just shakes his head.

McCormack 7: Decent enough performance. Somehow escaped being booked for continually getting involved in things when he shouldn't.

Bailey 6.5: Not as influential as recent weeks, although that run in the 2nd half was fantastic.

Gower 7.5: Dangerous all night and a great goal. Should've cracked another one in the 2nd half but strangely chose to pass to Walker in the box.

Barnard 6.5: Worked hard but got no joy at all against Elphick.

Walker 6: Didn't really contribute all that much. He doesn't seem to possess as much goal threat as he should and can't really see him breaking past 10 goals in a full season.

On a note on the subs, Revell actually impressed me for the first time in his short spell on the pitch. Certainly showed more than when he did when he first arrived. Is this due to the injury being sorted or because he was playing against his old team mates..........

I wondered that too, and to give him the benefit of the doubt I'd say it's down to not struggling with the hernia. He looked leaner and quicker to me.

On an aside about Tommy Black, anyone know if the extra year extension on his contract would be down to his choice or ours? If it's ours, then I'm guessing quite a lot of people would be glad for it not to be offered.

I think it was if Black played a certain amount of games, thereby proving his fitness, he was rewarded with a contract extension.

Black is not on song, but go back 4/5 weeks and he was our standout performer. I think he is a big part of Tilly's plans. Grant tends to come on for him 15 minutes to go to provide a defensive option and provide protection for Francis when Black is fading.

What a fantastic performance last night , particularly in the first half. It's all about confidence , Tilly & Brush deserve huge amounts of credit for the players they've brought in recently. Macca and Bailey are immense in centre midfield , notice which two defend when we have a corner !

I agree Black wasn't great last night but there's no doubting his ability , and let's face it wingers are inconsistent by nature , 3 or 4 games ago Gower was the one who's position was in doubt.

I wouldn't change a winning side but the good thing is we now have strength in depth.
