The Ratings Thread

Flavs - 7 not that much to do, solid game

francis - 8 got a rocket up **** or something but looks confident and back to his best

barrett - 8 what a goal and was a real captain tonight, showed everyone who was boss

clarke - 7 did his job well and lovely little flick to set up 2nd goal

mulgrew - 7 great deliveries into the box and getting better with more games, seems a lot more confident

black - 6 very dissappointed with him tonight, kept playing balls to soft for example when walker was clean through. left francis high and dry with two on one all game long. barrett had a few screaming moments at him

macca - 8 great performance, ran the midfield and battled all game long. thought he was going to kill someone towards the end

bailey - 8 love him!!!!! good going forward, great midfielder and also filled in at left back when mulgrew went forward. going to be big! great little run and nearly scored

gower - 9 when he has a good game he has a really good game. running all night long. great goal and even tracked back to help defence. corners have improved as well as his crossing

Walker - 7 held the ball up nicely, got the ball stuck under his feet quite a bit but didnt the dirty work well

barnard - 7 quiet by his standards but was constantly getting fouled all game long. nearly scored a couple

subs

grant - 6 little time and didn't do much

revell - 6 again not much time but really wanted him to score

charlie mac - can't really judge. good header at the end!

overall great team performance and a very important 3 points!!!!

Cant argue with any of those.

Black was the only one I thought didnt quite perform as you say.

Silly drunk bloke in the East Blacks didnt stop slating Walker shouting good riddance you did nothing which was nice. His first touch can go a bit wayward but when he has the ball under control looks pretty good and played some nice passes.

As for Barnard being fouled , I thought he was more to blame to be honest, constantly backing into the defender most of the time.

Yeah I'd agree with all of that. Maybe I'd mark Walker down one if I was being critical. I didn't think he had his best game tonight and would have liked to have seen Revell on sooner when Brighton were starting to come back into it.

I thought Anthony Grant played well when he came on on the right. I'd really like to see us sign this kid in the summer.

Gower was pure class tonight. That ball he played out to the opposite flank in the first half from just outside our box when it looked like he hadn't even looked was just inch-perfect.

I thought Grant was a real breath of fresh air when he came on and showed what we had been lacking for much of the game down the right hand side. I really like the look of him and I'd be very pleased if we were able to get him from Chelsea in the summer.

Black, as you say, was disappointing and I'm afraid he doesn't look up to it anymore. He just doesn't seem to have the pace and I can't see him having much of a future with us to be honest. It's a shame because I like him, but he just doesn't seem to have had enough games where he's really shown us what he can do.

I agree on tommy black.....but he has been part of this team which is on such a great run at the mo

Bailey filled in when Mulgrew went forward?
Yes but when the ball got played out on the wing as Brighton attacked towards our box Bailey ignored his man and ended up at centre-back.
Good job Mulgrew came sprinting back into position eventually.

Seen Bailey have better games than this, plus he played far too deep in the first 20 or so.

BTW, has Tommy lost all his confidence? Seemed the ultimate bottler tonight and for me the sub could have been made sooner.
Have believed for weeks that Anthony Grant would do better than Tommy, but we all know Tilly never changes a winning side.

Thought Bailey was superb, if that shot had gone in when he went past about 3 players he would have got a 9 or 10 :)

beutiful game footy we all watched the same match and have such varied opinions, a bailey playing well would normally have buried that, real shame cos the run he went on was class

Have to give Tilly massive credit for making the decision to axe Maher. Probably the biggest his made in his managerial career, considering Maher's affection and devotion to the club? Couldn't have been easy. Although it caused a stir at the the time, and I was slightly sceptical of his decision as I was/am a big Kevin Maher fan, it is quite clear that a Bailey/Macca combination is the way forward. Both full of energy, can run all day. I'd love to know how much distance Macca covered tonight. Not only that, but both are prepared to get beyond the strikers and threaten the goal - both did that superbly in the second half.

Wonderful performance tonight against a good side. I haven't seen a Southend side play with so much confidence since we went up from League 2 in my opinion.

Just my ratings from tonight;

Flavs 7
Francis 7.5
Mulgrew 7
Barrett 8
Clarke 7
Gower 8.5
Black 6
Macca 9 MOM
Bailey 8
Walker 7
Barney 7

Subs - 6 each

I agree except this awful comment, it was a terrible header, it was harder to miss than score!!

Bloody hell some people are hard to please. You are criticising Bailey for filling it at centre-back? Apart from the fact the man is already a legend and is close to being beyond criticism as I've seen PF (post Freddy), isn't that what any class player does when the centre-backs are busy playing total football?

All round great performance .. again
agreed Black wasn't at his best and Barnard was being climbed over and wrestled to the floor all night, i could see why Tilson took him off because he done well not to lose his cool.

2 fantastic goals, gower looks like a new player, macca was immence should of been MOTM imo but Barrett had a great game aswell.

My ratings:

Flahavan 8 - actually looked like a keeper, for possibly the first time this season. One free-kick he actually started outside his 6 yard box like the grown up keepers do. Those penalty saves have clearly given him a lot of confidence and make him twice the keeper.
Francis 8 - overshadowed by Mulgrew's emergence, otherwise is looking like the player we had reputedly signed last season.
Mulgrew 9 - oozes class. Lacks Sir Chrissy Powell's pace, but otherwise doesn't come off badly in comparison and there aren't many players who I've ever said that about. Just about the best passer I've seen in a Southend shirt since probably Mike Marsh was pulling the strings, and I don't mean any disrespect to Kevin Maher when I say that.
Clarke 7.5 - easy
Barrett 8 - back to his best after an awful spell around January. Had he been playing like this all season, we'd probably be already up. Fantastic finish for the total football second goal.
Gower 9 - with ldnfatso taking it easy on the criticism front, Gower looks back at his confident best. When was the last time a Southend player scored having picked the ball up in their own half? Not even sure Freddy managed that. You might have to go back to Sir Stanley.
Black 6 - the weak link, although that shows how far we've progressed. It wasn't so long ago he'd have been considered one of our stronger links.
McCormack 8.5 - along with Bailey completely bossed the midfield for at least the third consecutive game
Bailey 8.5 - I want ginger hair too.
Barnard 7 - worked hard, but got little change from the otherwise impressive ref
Walker 7 - for a little guy, so hard to dispossess.

Subs: Grant 7 - impressive, has looked worth signing permanantly
Revell 6 - put himself about

Thought Francis was superb last night and ,easily our best player in the first half certainly not overshadowed by Mulgrew.

Mulgrew's free kicks are fantastic though, how we have managed to have 2 left backs with such good deliveries in one season I dont know!

Said on another thread that Barnard would get more decisions if he stopped backing into the forwards. Looks like he is being fouled but if you watch him its normally because he has pushed himself halfway into the defenders abdomen. It was the same when he played for Crewe and had exactly the same from Peter Clarke...

Two full backs outstanding once again
One of Barrets best games for us, great at the back and fine goal
Gower back to his best
Macca and Bailey both championship class, awesome work rate and engines.
Thought the front 2 worked very well again. Yes Barney struggled in the air against Butters but with the ball at his feet he is superb, so intelligent and a great link player. Ditto Walker, just needs to pass it a bit earlier on occasions.

Also agree with Black, poor effort. He should look at Gowers goal and think "I can do that" becasue he clearly has the ability. But definitely Grant should come in, thought he was v bright and nearly scored, harrassed their players well too.

The fact he beat 3 players and got the shot off was for me a sign of playing well in itself!
