The Power Of The Zone - Tilly Defends Flavs

Glad to see Francis is on the mend too!

Yes, I'm hoping that we can get last season's "dream team" defence back so get well soon Hammell and Francis. With that defensive lineup back in place, Bradders and Harrold up front and JCR firing in the crosses we'll be back up the league in no time.

Right, Tilly says there's competition for the place in goal. He says Flavs has played well for a while and deserved to come back in or words to that effect. Conceding 4 goals isn't playing well and as there is competition for that place Collis should come in and play on Saturday. Please Tilly.

I can't see the harm in giving Collis a chance remember when Flahavan went through his bad patch when Aaron died and Bart Gremiek took his place, Flav's waited and waited and performed in the reserves untill that time when Gremiek got injured and he got his chance and proved he should be no.1 and Gremiek couldn't get back in. Now I think Tilly should look back and that and think maybe if he gives Collis a chance it will fire up Flav's to be the goalie he was 2 seasons ago!!!

I'm sick to the stomach of hearing this "If the right one comes along..." b*llocks...

It's painfully obvious we need a forward, So we should be out looking at games at every available oppurtunity, drawing up a list of targets and pursuing them... Not waiting for the right striker to fit the bill and fall into our laps.

To be fair, "if the right one comes along" is blatantly just a figure of speech, meaning Tilly is keeping his cards close to his chest. Following Simon Francis' injury, a few days later Tilly said "we might look for a replacement on loan, we'll have to wait and see" when in actual fact he'd already made an approach for Kerrea Gilbert.

I think it's naive and disrespectful to suggest that Tilly is simply waiting for a striker to appear out of thin air. He already has a list of targets and has been to several matches on scouting missions. Of course we need a new striker but we have to make sure money is spent wisely and he is right for the club.

I don't think the goalkeeping scenario is much of a problem to be honest. Regardless of whether Flavs or Collis plays, the real issues are in front of them in defence. In my opinion we've lost three excellent, commanding and experienced central defenders in the last 18 months and we haven't replaced any of them. During our promotion seasons Prior and Edwards were superb, as was Sodje until December last year. Although they were all pretty basic defenders, I can't think of many mistakes any of them made up until Sodje's red card at Norwich. The loss of their height has been a major blow, when all three were missing for the remaining of the season in 2006 we nearly blew our promotion chances! Barrett played better alongside one of those three, and maybe Clarke would've played better alongside one of them before they became too old. One of the main reasons we beat Man Utd was Sodje and Prior's defensive partnership, I don't think we'd have won with Clarke and Barrett paired together.

Our lack of height is further exposed by lack of tall midfielders and strikers. I don't think Bentley or Goater have been replaced by similar type players. Both of these players came back for corners to help the defence, now all we have to come back and help is Harrold and he isn't any good in the air!

At least the problems at the back have been identified as Richards and Liptak have been signed. However, do they have the nous that the three previous old pros possessed? Judging by Richards' suicidal header across goal on Saturday probably not.

Flavs was awesome in our promotion seasons, he wasn't a problem then. The issues in front of him need to be resolved, then we might be able to tighten up and look more solid.

So what would you rather do, rush out and buy the 1st striker we see, then when he doesn't do the business in the 1st 30 mins of his debut, slag him off as being the worst striker we've ever had at RH, and then blame Tilly for panic buying.....

If Collis plays well this afternoon in the reserve game (or even saves a penalty) I wonder if Tilly will give him his chance this Saturday.

Sorry but whats wrong with Tilly saying " We are looking at a couple of guys at present and need to assess whether they can do a job for us and are right for the team". At least that will send out a message to us supporters that he is actively looking. And if we dont sign anyone then they either couldnt agree terms or Tilly felt they wouldnt improve on what we already have. The fans may not be entirely happy with it but at least they will know we tried. Other than the Irish lad we havent really appeared serious have we ?
The sentence he has used may be a "figure of speech" but it also sounds complacent. I'm off home now. If the right bus comes along I might get on it.;)

His actual quote was

"Darryl has been consistently good for a number of years now though and that's why I went for him in the end."

So is Darryl keeping his place based on loyalty or ability???

Well , Collis did play and whilst he is competent , he has along way to go before he takes over as automatic first choice keeper in my book .

We are blessed to have someone of Daryl's quality with us - his exceptional saves were a major factor in our promotion to the CCC and even if he is not going through a 'purple patch' right now he does not deserve to simply be ditched .

The League has to be our priority - Tilly called it right for me - give Collis a start against Watford as he effectively kept us in the competition

Tricky, perhaps both, which isn't a bad way to work, but if he keeps being loyal to Flavs even when Collis put in a decent performance it's going to drive a very competent keeper away from this club and discourage others from arriving in the future.
