The Podcast?!?

lee_sufc

Coach
Before I start this - I am not moaning etc and think that it's good that the people involved in getting this working are looking of innovative ways of promoting SUFC but I honestly don't see the point in the RSS side of things.

I run my own site and know what RSS is but for the SUFC site to use this to distribute the podcasts seems a bit pointless - why not just have the files available to download?!? Most people on here seem confused as to how RSS works so it would keep things simple.

The other thing I have noticed is that a lot of people think they need an MP3 player to listen to the podcasts - this isn't true as you can listen to them on your PC - again, I don't think this is clear to people who don't know.

I like the way SZ has implemented RSS so I can see if there have been updates on the front page but for the official site to use it just for the podcast it doesn't make sense?!?

Again, it's nice to see innovative ideas but there must be an easier way of doing things.

Yes - just copy and paste this into your browser:

mms://video.premiumtv.co.uk/southend/podcast/podcast300805.mp3

It's as simple as that which is why I don't understand the point of using RSS for it?!?

Must admit I was slightly wondering why someone would want to burn it/upload it and listen to it later when you could click and play the mp3 and have it playing in the background whilst surfing or dodging work etc.

I thought the whole point of podcasting was that you could set up your PC to automatically download new podcasts onto your MP3 player?

If anyone is interested I have been doing bootleg podcasts of reserve and youth team matches for over a year now.

Unfortunately most of them comprise of 90 minutes of silence punctuated with the occasional sound of a cup of tea being poured from a thermos.

Last years away fixture to cambridge was pretty exciting though. You can actually hear someone eating a kit kat.

Jeez! Why bother with all that RSS crap when you can just click on a link like this and listen to it on the PC?! Come on, Scriv, put in a link ... ?

So far I've been able to listen to them, but would like to download the podcasts to build up my own library for future referance. Can anyone tell me how you actaully download the file from that link?

Could I recommend Net Transport on this link which will happily download mms:// files.

It is easy to use, free for life, but has a nag screen appearing after a month

If you follow all the instructions on the official site, you should have no problems.

I don't think it's fair to say "what's the point". The point is to offer supporters and outsiders, who may be interested, a genuine alternative in getting their weekly fix of Blues' news.

Many more podcasting sites are now adding the official SUFC podcast, including podcastpickle.com and sportpodcasts.com

Keep watching for more too!

Why was it a let-down True Blue?
1. Not exactly a media breakthrough
2. most of the stuff on there 99% of us know from 1 the message board or 2 echo
3. why when you can just download it from the site without all this RSS run around

don't get me wrong its a good idea in principal but I don't see it living upto the hype it was given!

That's swell, Scott. How about:

1. Thanks SUFC for trying to be innovative and genuinely inventive with new technology.
2. Thanks SUFC for getting news out to those of us who have no access to the Echo (and before you say thisisessex - have you seen it? It's sh*te).
3. Thanks SUFC for a fun new way to get news on our favourite team.

bluearmy - rest assured, not everyone is as down in the mouth about the new podcasts as Scott is...

1. Well, it's a football media first - as we said from the start. No other football team has an official dedicated podcast. Not even the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan. That has to be highlighted as a major coup for the club.

2. I seriously doubt 99% of people have heard selected interviews, gained Nick Alliker's insights into games or know about ticketing information for up and coming away games.

3. If you don't like the RSS format then please try some of the other sites which carry the feed. There are now plenty out there - three have already been highlighted elsewhere on this forum.

It's a shame you don't appreciate the podcast, TrueBlue. I hope your thoughts are not shared by the majority.

Remember I, along with Nick and David, supply this service for free... none of us are paid for this. We do it for the love of the club and because we want to give SUFC as much publicity as possible.

Goes without saying Matt is is good to see the club ventruing forward into things for example the swipe card season tickets sounds like a quality idea for many reasons but this was a bit of a let down the way things were built up!
