The Leon Clarke Situation

Its only gonna get worse, teams coming down from this season on will be getting about £20 mill over 3 seasons (correct if i'm wrong anyone!) added to the £30 mill they get for finishing bottom! The top 7 or 8 of the Championship will become very exclusive soon!

Compare those amounts to the massive £50,000 Southend prize money for winning League 1:(

In the echo today Tilson says he isnt in a rush to sign him just yet.

Basically says if he can work a bit harder he would be a good signing.

I think this is a very wise approach, as long as the loan to buy deal is something Wednesday cant cancel.

Clarke has been a revelation since joining with some superb goals but his work rate etc arent amazing and I could see him getting a slating if the goals were to dry up.

I cant see any reason why we shouldnt be buying him as despite having flaws he clearly has ability and 3 goals in 4 games plus a penalty certainly looks good, plus his previous record looks good too.

Just hope that the deal is solid and that if we leave it we dont lose out.

I don't think he looks particularly lazy on the pitch myself - it seems strikers get little credit for hard work pressing forwards yet slated for not defending hard enough. However, Tilson expects his players have to have a good work ethic or it will go wrong sooner or later. If he adheres to this sort of instruction then he could be one of the best signings in League One.

A long way to go before he gets this sort of accolade though.

The question is, does Tilly want a guy who runs around all over the place but doesnt score any league goals or someone who conserves his energy for that vital moment when he can score at least once every game?.... mmmmm hard one that Tilly.... but don't think about it too long! I'm sure the vulctures are already circling with envy.

Just Sign Him Up And Get It Over With.....He's A Good Striker And Will Help Us On Our Way.

How fickle are we? Some of us are already projecting the scenario that could unfold when Leon hits a dry patch! Come on guys, he has scored 5 in 5 games! He has a good touch and excellent vision and these are things that can't be taught, only improved upon. No one will score every game but I think Clarke's impact on the team is galvanising those around him and giving the whole team confidence. If Clarke loses form maybe the other strikers will be hungry enough to take their chance when it presents itself to them. We have enough strikers so let's hope competition for places raises their game.

Lazy no, but not hardworking either, he isnt the kind of player to chase balls down, he even tutted when he had to do so against Doncaster and Harrold had gone off.

I think its actually amusing Eastwood got slated when he wasnt scoring when he actually worked harder in my opinion than Clarke.

On the Sheffield Wednesday board they comment on his work rate too.

Im actually of the same opinion as stated above, I want a striker to be working hard but also want them to have energy for when they need it. Strikers running themselves into the gorund to close down a keeper for me is a waste. This was more important for Freddy who had pace though as Clarke doesnt seem the type to be out running too many.

As I say above Eastwood was one of the best players we have had yet when his goals dried up he got slated plenty (never by me).

Clarke is a fantastic signing and deserves all the credit for what he has done, but if you want to see fickle wait until he does have a dry patch....

Yes 5 in 5 games :) but more important is a goal in each of those 5 which is better than, say, 4 in one, three goal-less and then a 1.
