The Joy of Essex

Is it a series then, I thought it was a one off?

Drastic,
Just assumed it was -like his last series on France. But you're right apparently, it is just a one off.
How could anyone make a programme on Essex and not feature Southend-on-Sea? :stunned:

i resent this, its got nothing to do with anything, i fall into two of those categories and as im still in a grammer school and i plan to do something along the lines of physics or maths at uni.

Perhaps one day you'll grow up to be a real Essex girl too. :winking:

Jonathan Meades seemed more interested in demonstrating his vocabulary and grasp of obscure trivia than providing any real insight into Essex and its residents.

What a bizarre programme by a man who's politically to the right of Rusty. I'm not sure if I enjoyed it or not or was just bemused by it all.

I wouldn't advise a game of scrabble with him eh?

He was well clever that man.

He said a load of words that I don't know and stood in front of Hadleigh Castle.

My favourite bit was where he said Jimmy Somerville formed the Communards in North Essex or something. I only caught bits of it due looking up his words online in between.

They got the beginning wrong though. He said things like "Amy Childs" and it showed a picture of a farm, unless this was posh boy's metaphor that she's a pig?

He said one sentence I managed to grasp the meaning of, and that was because I was watching on BBC iPlayer and rewound it three times. Verbally a complete load of tosh with the occasional good bit of historical knowledge I didn't know about but glad I do now. Will make my all to frequent trips around Essex all the more interesting.

Big plus point was me and the missus had a whale of a time trying to guess his whereabouts visually.

As has been mentioned I'm a little astounded the fact that Southend on Sea didn't get a mention.

Very interesting. Just shows what a diverse county it was. Loved the Mackmurdo bit on his house in Wickham Bishops. Did not know that. When in Thaxted he could have mentioned Holst and that the theme to "I vow to me my country" was from his planet suite (Jupiter) but was originally called Thaxted. Also thought he missed a bit as he is an architectural historian that the chief designer and architect of a number of key buildings in Harlow (I think most are crap BTW) was Sir Frederick Gibberd who designed the new Liverpol Cathedral, Heathrow and the Regent's Park mosque. He could have visited his house outside Harlow with its sculptures in the garden. He also could have mentioned the Peculiar people of Rochford and around. The author of the Sharpe novels Bernard Cornwell was adopted in to the Wiggins family (builders) and has hated them ever since. And why he did not visit Jaywick, once described by a Zimbabwean colleague as "worse than Soweto".
Also loved his not so subtle digs against the left.

Well I liked it.

There weren't exactly many more long words than a MtS match report and it cast light on a side of Essex history I wasn't familiar with.

Just watched it, thought it was great. Could have done without the comedy radio interludes, but at least they were less irritating than the real BBC Essex. Actually thought it was Ray Clark initially.

I enjoyed it. There were some interesting and different shots of the Essex countryside and the local architecture and I certainly wasn't aware of all the cults and what went on at the Salvation Army farm in Hadleigh.
