The Hobbit

What are people's thoughts on the upcomming film? For me, it's a relatively short kids book and Jackson has stretched it out over 3 films, the first being nearly 3 hours long! Now with LOTR that's understandable at the books are mahoosive, but I have a horrible feeling that they will drag as the story is obviously filled with a non Tolkien storyline.

Thought it was two films?

Compared to the Lord of the Rings the book is pretty crud, but Im sure Peter JAckson will get the most out of it and am looking forward to it.

No it's now 3. The Hobbit, Smaug's Desolation and There & Back again.

As far as I can remember, Jackson hasn't directed a bad film - even his version of King Kong was great - so maybe you're right. Hope hasn't bent to studio interference to make another trilogy where 1 film would have sufficed.

The three films will also cover elements of the Silmarillion, which explains where Gandalf keeps disappearing to throughout. From what I've read, there is very little that will stray outside of the overall Tolkien story.

Obviously I realise my knowledge of this makes me some kind of pathetic virgin.

I did wonder how they were going to get 2 movies out of one book when they got 3 out of 3 books with LOTR. Hard to see how they will get 3 out of the Hobbit as it wasnt as long as any of the LOTR trilogy.

Im sure they will be good though as like you say he does make good films.

Sound like the first 2 films will basically be the Hobbit and the 3rd will fill in the gap from the hobbit to the start of Lord of the Rings trilogy, probably culled from references in LOTR books. Personally I think Jackson knows & loves the Tolkein universe well enough to know what will work and what won't, also interested as Del Toro was involved in the writing process even though he couldn't direct in the end. Hopefully I'll be able to catch it over christmas, could even be the first 3D film I'll see.

EDIT: Just seen Dick Bates' Protege's post, that makes sense. Haven't read the Silmarillion, although I have it. I must do this.

I'm not too worried about the three films thing, Pete's a fanboy, he wants to do it right.

Frankly, I'm more concerned with the dwarves looking like they're CGI - have you seen Bombur?! Bugger me...

At least you could snuggle into his beard whilst he whispers sweet Dwarvish into your shell like.....

Be warned, it's basically crap, more fill in references and short episodes than coherent story. I couldn't finish it, shame because I love the Hobbit and LOTR.

Slander and callummy! You've edited my quote.

Also - who spends that amount of time on their beards? they must rack up one helluva bill in the hairdressers.

I was quite surprised Jackson could flesh it out to three films. However, I heard an interview with one of Tolkien's grandsons and apparently the family a quiet happy for Jackson to add to the plot.
