Here at last, after a few weeks of intense and intriging battle, is the final of Battle of the Albums !!!
May i take this opportunity to congratulate each and every one of you who has contributed to the threads, either in pictures and words, or just by voting .. a "Battle of ..." is only as good as its input and i'd like to think this has been a good one, i do apologise that the threads haven't been as structured as i would've liked, as many of you will know my flat is undergoing major surgery at the minute and even leaving the computer out and accessible has been difficult ... but i muddled through and at last we have got to the final between two hugely influential albums, fittingly enough between two of our more regular posters .. may the best man win !!!

The path to the final ...

Round One:
Nevermind 33 Astral Weeks 9
The Stone Roses 45 Reign in Blood 7

Straight forward victories for both, though interestingly enough TSR has not come close to matching the level of support it received here, whereas Nevermind surpassed its first round vote in every other round

Round Two:
Nevermind 36 Tommy 13
The Stone Roses 29 Abbey Road 15

Again comfortable passages for both albums, TSR victory over The Beatles being quite a scalp

Quarter Finals:
Nevermind 34 Thriller 32
The Stone Roses 32 London Calling 19

Nevermind survived a thriller verses Thriller in arguably the best match of the whole competition while TSR overcame the punk challenge

Semi Finals:
Nevermind 35 (What's the Story) Morning Glory 30
The Stone Roses 29 Doolittle 12

Once again Nevermind survived an epic Battle to progress whereas TSR brushed aside the competitions surprise package

So will the relative ease in which The Stone Roses reached this Final count against it in the final reckoning ?? Or will it prove to be a bridge too far for a Nevermind album that has had to negotiate a far more tricky path

Start your engines folks, the 48 hour final of Battle of the Albums is just about ready to begin ...

And may I take this opportunity to thank Blueblood for organising this battle. Excellent work sir and worthy of lots of green

I would like to echo the sentiments of Uxbridge and extend a a big thank you to Blueblood for running a very successful Battle

:D Haha! Was just going to query the "being sick for the 3rd time" comment in view of Senga's comment on the Live thread.

yes, he's back in bed and suffering majorly - its his own fault. Im blaming that also on his eagerness to get the battle of the albums started (have pm blueblood to apologise though).

he looks rough and sounds like a little boy who feels really sorry for himself.

to think i went to the hen shine and it was great and i feel fine, was even up just after 6 to play and feed the dogs in the garden.

Fair play indeed though Lee, had far too much rep from me though recently so it seems! ;)

I think that the early lead is reflective of the stature in which this amazing, ground breaking, influential and epic album is held.

Vote Nevermind

The Stone Roses.

What can I say about this album that I haven’t said throughout this entire battle?

It’s an archetypal British album that no other country in the world would, or could create. Made up of four very different members, Jon Squire, Mani, Reni and of course the mercurial Ian Brown, they came together to give an album that the many music journalists instantly labelled one of the best of all time when it was released in 1989.

Always in the top 10 of any “Greatest Album” poll and voted Best Album Ever by the NME in 2000.

The 10 year re-release of this album reached No.9 in the British Album charts, a whole new generation discovering the brilliance of the music.

Fusing rock and dance in perfection, creating a whole new genre of music that is still at the forefront of alternative and chart music today. The album inspired an entire generation of bands such as Oasis, and it’s effects also had a huge hand in creating the acid house generation.

It made guitar bands the epitome of cool again where before there had been Kylie & Jason and sugary pop of SAW.

Looking at the tracklisting we have tunes that the hardest of critics can’t fail to tap a foot to – She Bangs The Drum, I Am The Ressurection, Made Of Stone. Love songs, such as This Is The One and the beautiful Waterfall, not to mention a bit of politics on Bye Bye Badman and Elizabeth My Dear.

I can’t argue against Nevermind as it probably had the second biggest musical influence on my life, but it speaks of alienation, rage, anger, and the so-called Generation X. The Stone Roses is full of love and hope - to me it sounds like a warm summers day in June, lying on your back, seeing shapes in the wispy clouds as a beautiful girl whispers love into your ear. Even 20 years after its release it sound fresh and youthful.

Listen to the songs and decide for yourself, to what I believe to be the greatest pop music album of all time. Please vote The Stone Roses.

I wanna be adored

That will be the substance abuse!!

I was going to refrain from having a dig at the album you are promoting but seeing as you have set the standard....

"I am the Resurrection" has to be the most arrogant songs of all time. And it would help your plight a lot more if you could actually spell the names of the tracks from the album you are promoting mate!!
two R's and one S mate!!

The problem with current and of course past rock is that most so-called alternative bands desperately want to sound normal. On their collar-grabbing second album, and their first for a major label, the Seattle trio Nirvana never entertain that notion. The music-fuzz-blast guitars, throbbing bass-roars and spits with enough in-your-face bluster to make your compact disc skip; left-of-centre rock rarely sounds as alive as the metallic punk of ''Smells Like Teen Spirit,'' the album's first single. Adding to the music's edginess, though, are the lyrics. The characters in singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain's songs all seem vaguely pathological-and oblivious to it.

Cobain's strange idea of a love song, ''Come as You Are,'' has a refrain of ''And I swear that I don't have a gun,'' as if that's supposed to be comforting; in other songs, he mutters lines like ''the animals I've trapped have all become my pets.'' Nirvana may not stand a chance of selling anywhere near as many records as Guns N' Roses, and it is a good job that no one told Cobain; you never know how he would have reacted!!!!!!

I think you need to re-read the sentence Dave, in no way did I have a "dig". As I said, it's probably the second most influential album of my life.

God this is going to sting but I have to vote for the album that appeals most to me.

Nevermind for me.

I feel dirty.

Perhaps the last great ever rock Album.........NOOOOO

Definitely the last great ever rock Album of all time

Tuneful, rocking and hard enough to appeal to a wide range of listeners, Nirvana's transition from the limited appeal punk rock of Bleach to making music that sounded great on mainstream radio was amazing. Dave Grohl, who's since released two solid records with Foo Fighters, was a key addition at drums and Kurt Cobain's song writing showed incredible growth. Cobain's death is the great loss of our time. His lyrics had personality and a sense of humour. His guitar work could be melodic and assaultive at the same time, like on Teen Spirit. His influence is clear both in lesser grunge bands and even now in the far less imaginative bands creating the garbage of today's rock.
