Thanks to Grim, I am pleased to say that the only release of 2006 I've heard so far has been a throroughly enjoyable experience... and that is the album by Arctic Monkeys.

A simply mesmeric spellbinding cd.

Cat Power

Any Beth Ortan fans will love it.
Sounds good....looks quite fit too!
Hmm... sorry, the track on the website seems to confirm an age old prejudice of mine - namely that girls and plugged-in guitars, on the whole, don't mix...
At first I thought I disagreed with that statement but try as I might, I can't think of an example to back it up. Initially, I thought Polly Harvey but as much as I admire her she's never really floated my boat. How about The Breeders? "Pod" still rates among the very best albums of the 90s for me.

It's an "on the whole", rather than an absolute rule. Some of Frischmann's work in Elastica was excellent during the early Britpop phase.

But "on the whole", it tends to go a bit pear-shaped once they plug the things in...

Hmmm, you do have a point - a quick scoot through 160gb of music on my hard drive only yielded Cranes, Deerhoof, Electrelane, Heavenly, Jessica Bailiff, Kristin Hersh/Throwing Muses, Sleater-Kinney and The Slits. All very good but it's precious little compared to the guys!

I agree with MtS, purely because he said 'on the whole'.

There are exceptions, of course... like Patti Smith.

What about L7 or the lunachicks famous if only for their song Jan Brady.
What about Girlschool, they all looked like Sally james which is worthy of praise in itself.

I liked elastica, their album only lasted about 20 something minutes, I bought the menace al;bum too but it was a bit of an afterthought.

The Sundays, brilliant, although was a guy playing the guitar.

Yep - I thought of plenty of great bands fronted by chicks but with blokes playing all the guitars so they don't really count.

I've just remembered Babes in Toyland - they were great for a couple of albums.

I've been thinking aout this for the last 20mins or so and that's all I've been able to come up with too!

The Slits came to mind, but I was scraping the barrel a bit there....

Back on topic, I understand British Sea Power may be issuing their follow-up to 'Open Season' later this year. I'll be putting that release date in my diary if so...

You guys obviously never saw the Runaways (Joan Jett at 18 pre-Blackhearts)

As long as you just looked and listen too hard.........

I saw them in 76 the bassist seemed to only know three notes, but here seethrough tee-shirt sort of took your mind off it......

Supported that night by Graham Parker and the Rumour.

Me too but only in the vain hope of them ditching the polished sound of "Open Season" for a return to the art-rock sound of the debut.

I liked Open Season, but it certainly wasn't a patch on 'The Decline Of...'.

I listened to it the other day for the first time in a couple of months and as ever it blew me away.

Yeah, it stands up well doesn't it. I played "Remember Me" to death when it came out yet I can still hear it now and it will still send shivers down my spine. Can't say that about many songs of the past decade - best single of the 21st century for me.
