Does one cancel out the other?
Not sure really, I suppose you can count normal life and Southend as the same thing, so I am generally optimistic about most stuff, but pessimistic about Southend.

Being a student i took it to be a beer. I voted half empty although I believe in general I am pretty optimistic. But when it comes to beer if someone bought me that it would definately be half empty.
 
With this question, it depends on how the drink was poured out. If it was poured to half way, that'll be half full. If it was a full pint, then it would be half empty. Sounds logical to me.
