My guess is that Freddy is probably not fit enough yet to do Saturday Tuesday Saturday Tuesday, so I reckon he was on the bench on Saturday with a view to starting tomorrow night.

If Smith is fit then he will start - despite Bentley's decent performances Smith was signed as no.1 and will have first claim between the sticks when available.

Not expecting Phillips back in the near future - I spoke to him before the Exeter game and he said that the news re: his injury was "not good at all" - sounded more like he'd be out for at least a month than a couple of weeks.

Not sure what the news is re: Tomlin - anyone heard anything?

I suspect tomorrow night the team will be:

-----------------Smith------------------------

Clohessy Cresswell Prosser Barker

Hurst Spicer Timlin Martin

---------Eastwood Assombalonga-------

Subs: Bentley, Straker, Leonard, Coughlan, Woodyard, Benyon, Njie,

if Tomlin is fit then he'd be in for Martin with Njie dropping out of the squad

Assuming : Phillips , Harris , Tomlin all injured , then I would have Freddy in behind two strikers in a free role.

4-1-2-1-2

Bentley
Clohessy , Cresswell , Prosser , Barker
Leonard
Timlin , Hurst
Eastwood
Assombalonga , Benyon

Subs : Smith , Straker , Coughlan , Woodyard , Spicer , Martin , Njie

You seem to have accidentally put your football manager tactics in here ! 4-1-2-1-2 ? Lets hope the oppostion dont bring any wingers and only like playing in the middle 10 yards of the pitch!

If we play anything like that it will be 4 3 3, but Id expect us to start 442 with hopefully Eastwood instead of Benyon.

hope eastwood to start and ryan hall on the bench ,
if burton are hard to breakdown, its got to be worth having hall as an option.
as we all know he can create and score when he is in the mood.

I forgot to say that with that formation we would have Clohessy and Barker overlapping ( ok , so there's no one to overlap ! ) and filling the space out wide.
Freddy would then get the ball in space , play the ball wide and then meet the return cross at the far post:winking:

Ok , it's all a bit 'last 10 against Exeter' stuff , but that was good !!!!!!

We need to start Eastwood, Burton are a very good attacking team and they have scored many crackers this season. We need a strong and quick defence as they hit teams on the break, Spicer better start tackling soon!

Not sure if Bentley should stay in goal, and if Phillips should start if fit also, I will leave that up to the gaffer.

Is Smith allowed to play? I thought it was a mandatory 2 weeks for concussion and that doesn't actually expire until today.

Also re Freddy - he can't start unless 100%. We have decent enough players to win it and we can always bring him on later. If he starts and doesn't last the match, we have nothing available to change it for the better.

I thought that was for rugby union only?
I don't think there is any such rule for football.

There was definitely talk of bringing the 14 day rule into football and tbh I thought that it had been brought in three or four years ago but when I looked online for some evidence when Smith got injured I couldn't find any.

Yeah exposed fullbacks who then push forward. Doesnt sound overly solid to me

Playing 3 in the middle ( as opposed to the 1-2 you suggest) did produce a result against Exeter, not convinced its how we should start the game though. However when Corr and Eastwood are fully fit I wonder how he will accomodate them + Assombalonga.

Yes , you're right , in the cold light of day , the thought of Barker playing as an attacking full back without any wide man as cover is just too scary to contemplate.
At the moment , with injuries , players not fully fit , heads not right ( whatever that means ) and suspension , our team doesn't take too much thought , and without stating the obvious , we really need a couple of central midfield players.

As for the strikers , I think once all fit , the options look strong , but as always with SUFC , there are lots of 'ifs' and 'buts'.

Although we can all ( well mostly all of us ) see the benefits of a fully fit striker like Corr , there must still be SOME doubts about a player when they've been out for as long as he has.
I really hope he gets back to the level he was at two seasons ago , and even in the brief cameo against Exeter , he showed what he can do at this level.
I'm sure he will get there , but I also think that goal has got a few people too ecited , too soon - don't rush him.

I've joked on here about playing down Assombalonga's contribution , but there is a serious side to it , because despite Watford's Italian dream / vission ( call it what you want ) , if they are struggling at Christmas time and Britt keeps scoring each week , then there is the real possibility of them recalling him , rather than extending the loan until the end of the season.

Freddy has that bit of class about him , and I think will do ok once he gets a regular run in the team , but I'm not sure if Sturrock is convinced at all.
I'm not sure how long the 'not fully fit' line can be used and still seem credable ?

Anyway , I'm a bit off subject.
We will win 2-0 tonight with an unchanged side and Benyon scoring both
