Talksport last night

C C Csiders

Life President
On Talksport last night, during the Football First show the presenter Ian Someoneorother and Jason Cuindy were discussing the Championship, and debating whether it was more exciting than the Premiership.

They made a big play on the fact that the Championship contains 15 clubs who have played in the Premiership, and stated that all these could be vying for those top 6 spots (mind you one of them would be Barnsley).

The self-obsessed Cundy remarked on all the 'big clubs' and stated "obviously the likes of Southend and Col******r will find it really difficult, and face a season of struggle." It came across that he considered that one of his old clubs Ipswich are in with a chance of making the play-offs. I actually think that he will find it is Ipswich who will face a season of struggle not us.

sadly he's probably right

That is a very good point Ipswich have not strengthened at all and have a very inexperienced manager. My Ipswich supporting colleague is very worried indeed.

I get so annoyed at these patronising pillocks who next to bugger all about SUFC.

As much as I would love to prove Cundy and his type wrong, I think that we must have a reality check. We will almost certainly lose more games than we win this season and a finish above the relegation zone will be a major achievement. We need to gradually build ourselves up for a push for the paly offs in three years time. It all comes down to how we measure "success" Staying up will definately be success for us. Getting into the Premiersh1te before we get our new ground would be a major disaster for the club. We need to all undertand that. Please understand that I am not being defeatist or pessimistic, if we finish tenth I would be overjoyed!

Absolutely. I also think we will lose more than we win - but we won't lose enough to go down.

Anything above 16th is a massive success this season.

Ditto!

I cna't really understand why everyone thinks Barnsley will do so well. They've lost the services of some key players and the only significant incoming player I can see is McIndoe who I think will be very good for them.

I think that we do need to keep a reality check here. If we stay up, the achievements this club has made in three seasons will be absolutely remarkable. If we come down, it shouldn't be expected but it has to be considered a likelihood. We have to be better than three teams in this division. Take your pick boys and girls.

We could, perhaps, draw inspiration from this.

Two seasons ago we won the play-offs in League Two. The following season we won League One.

When we last won consecutive promotions we did it alongside Cambridge United. When we won promotion from the League Two equivalent in the first season (1989/90) the play-off winners were Cambridge United who subsequently won the next division up (just like us). The following season in what is now the Championship they actually made the play-offs. they lost in the S-F to Leicester City. Of course, we wouldn't want to follow this Cambridge example completely down-the-line, as they were relegated the following season, and worse was to follow.........

Agreed.

But didn't we all say the same this time last year (especially after the defeat by Port Vale)?

Incidentally, if we go to the Prem it will kill the club. We couldn't compete financially, we'd lose our best players (not to mention the management) and the long term effect would be catastrophic.

But, if we were in the play off final, would we all be wanting to lose?

What a sad state this game is in, that allows a situation to exist where any team is actively NOT wanting to go up...

You guys can always look at it the other way.

1. Going into the championship which team has one of the best records over the past two seasons or maybe 100 games.
2. Which team has an amazing record with there current manager.
3. Which team has the momentum
4. Which team is the only champions in the championship
5. Which team has Freddie Eastwood

Also if memory serves me correct (someone will prove me wrong) since tilly took over and shaped the team we've only played Southampton from the top 2 flights and that was in the Diet Pepsi Cup. So we are unproven at the moment.

Anyway i believe we'll shock them and end up in the top 10.

I believe we'll do a Wigan but in the championship

I'd love that, and yes, how confusing would it be if we were 1 win away from the premiership, we would love it in the prem, but it could cause us major damage. It is a real shame that this situation comes around, but i don't think we will get promoted so id be happy with staying in this league! (oh yea, we have to beat col ewe aswell.)

Seems like they know enough about SUFC to suggest that we'll find it difficult.

I don't find such statements patronising. It's true and I quite like us being the underdogs. That's when we perform.

I also was listerning to Talksport lastnight and rang in to speak to Ian and Jason. I made it absolutely clear that Southend were not in the Chamionship to make up the numbers, and we have the momentum to make an impact on the league. Did anybody hear me?

If we go to Premiership, its worth £30 million to the club, the different we got Ron Martin in charge & he not that stupid to blow it on overpaid players who don't give a damm. I rather its spend on young players & best Championship players, the rest of the money goes to improve our training ground & wages & to wipe our old 'debts' clean. If we finish bottom, so what, we get 6 million for the next two season in Championship, with careful management, Southend will come back stronger like Charlton.

I'm not so sure they do know much about SUFC, remember all the "experts" who tipped us for relegation fodder last year.

However I do accept that we will be seen as underdogs, and also this season will be bloody hard work to keep our heads above water. We all have to be realistic about this.

I heard you Taff Shrimper!

Good call, good points. The only thing you missed was an opportunity to jump on Cundy when he suggested that we have to, "change and improve our style of play"

To what? 1970's Dutch Total Football?

Cundy? We play pass to feet, have done for two and a half seasons. Pay attention, boy.

I agree with Murkey, the Premiership could only be harmful to our club if we allow it to be. If we went up, I'd want to see the players who got us there rewarded with payrises (which could be cut again if we went down) and given the chance to play in the top league, rather than see the club blow millions on wages and transfer fees to mercenaries.

With parachute payments, even a season in the top level can bring in £40m. I don't buy any arguement that says that that money can't help the club.

I don't see why everyone's getting so wound up

we've had back to back promotions, including winning the League, when every so-called 'pundit' has had us as dead certs for relegation

let them keep underestimating us

I personally think we will struggle, but am confident we will stay up, even if it's fifth from bottom

Blimey - I agree word-for-word with what Lee has just said!

I think I need to go and have a lie down... it must be the heat getting to me...
