Please tell me I'm not the only person who learnt that at school...? It's why, incidentally, I agree with Rusty that Lady Jane Grey is an impostor.

:)

Never heard that before. My tactic was to put in all the names I knew, and increment them by one each time, until no more were accepted. Edward and Henry accounted for 16 of the 41!

I do find it interesting that in all that time, we've only had 41 Monarchs...

less than some clubs have had managers.

A fair point - in fact, on average, each monarch has spent a pretty impressive 23 years on the throne - albeit that those numbers are going to be pretty warped by the five big hitters:

Victoria - 63 years
George III - 59 years
Elizabeth II - 57 years (and counting)
Henry III - 56 years
Edward III - 50 years

Those are all bloody long reigns in anyone's book - especially Henry III, who lived at a time of shorter life expectancy (albeit that he ascended the throne aged 9).

Still, at the other end of the scale (and excluding Lady Jane Grey, aka the "9-day queen"), you've got Edward V, who only lasted a couple of months before nasty Uncle Richard (aka Richard III) slung him in the tower; and Edward VIII who only lasted 10 months before abdicating the throne in favour of his brother, only 'cos he wanted to marry some American bird. Wally (or was it Wallis?).

Finally, how is it that Lady Jane Grey makes the cut on that Sporcle quiz, but Empress Matilda (who captured King Stephen and thus took the throne for about 9 months) doesn't?
