Strikers - who is the worst ever.....

Just what i was about to say!!

Graeme Jones was poor, but was Shearer-like in comparison to some of the names mentioned on here!
Lee Chapman... hit his Mrs more than he hit the net for us!
wow.gif

Anyone remember Joe Allon? - lasted about 30mins of his only game before being subbed.
of the others Steve Jones and Sada N'dyae are both up there with the worst.
Not strictly strikers but I remember comical performances by both Keith Dublin and Phil Whelan when both asked to play up front!

How no one has mentioned Mario Walsh is totally beyond me. And he came from Col Ewe. He really was true poo.

As for Dominic Foley I only saw him play in the Rushden game. I was impressed with him. I thought it was o easy to see that he had played at a much higher level, and I thought he had a nice touch on him.
For the record he played for the republic 4 times scoring twice.

Didn't Chapman score on his only Southend appearance? What a record!

Seems we cover this every month :

Trevor Whymark
Mario Walsh
Richard Young
Gary Jones ("The Offside Kid")
Lee Nogan
Dave Regis
Andy Rammell
Trevor Fitzpatrick
Sada N'Diaye
Neil Campbell
Neville Roach
Barrington Belgrave
Jason Harris
Dominic Foley

I think in fairness we have to rule out loanees and players who only played a couple of times as it is not fair to judge. After all, if Corty had been a triallist at the beginning of this season in the friendlies against Ipswich and Gillingham we would have said he was the worst defender we had ever seen. But whilst we're mentioning them George Duck played in a Blues tour to the USSR in the early 70's and although I didn't see any games I don't think the reports were that good.

Incidentally, Collymores strike partner on his debut was Steve Brown and another debutant, Scott Ashenden, was out wide. Brown scored too IIRC.

Now, worst ever strikers to play on a fairly regular basis... lets work those memory banks a bit...

Not mentioned so far but possible contenders

John Gymer
Gary Moore
Stuart Brace
Eddie Baber
Jeroen Boere (I thought he was ok actually but am surprised no-one has mentioned him)
Leon Constantine

One for the underachievers list... anyone remember Phil Chisnall? We bought him in the 60's from either Liverpool or Man Utd... can't remember which... in pure effort terms he made Bramble look like Beckham

Boere was a decent enough player but his attitude stunk the place out. Best not get Matt the Shrimp started on him though!

fbm, think you've been unfair to one or two on your list.

Phil Chisnall was a midfielder who we signed from Man Ure. He had more talent in his little toe than Bramble has in his whole body.

Stuart Brace made no impact on team play but inside the box was deadly.

Gary Moore was a honest and hard working player and laid on lots of goals for others, notably Billy Best, one of our greatest strikers.

I would rather have these three playing for us now than some of the rubbish we've had to endure in the last 10 years (and will probably have to watch again next season).

My point exactly fiftyone... talent wise he was streets ahead... effort wise he was not at the races. Or so my Dad kept telling me... I was only 8 at the time...

Does anyone think Gary Moore's description sounds like Drewe... the comparisons are uncanny, including the ability to hit the ball over the bar from very close range!

Now if we can find a striker like Billy Best...

Thanks for that info - the one I meant was Ashenden, so lightweight you could knock him over with a feather and absolutely no ability anyway.

Gymer was certainly total garbage so that's another for the list but Brace's goalscoring record spoke for itself despite the fact that he did absolutely nothing else.

And it was John Baber not Eddie and he was a winger as I recall. He lost his place to Derek Woodley (RIP) who left so he then lost his place to a bloke called Cowan or something; he then left and Baber lost his place to Terry Johnson. Not a lot of luck there!

I'm pretty sure it was Liverpool - he won 2 championship medals under Bill Shankly.

IIRC he had a dodgy start but the began to knock in a fair few.
Gary Bennet was in the same style as Tommy Mooney,he scored more goals and with more frequency when he left the hallowed hall.I'm not sure if it is just me but it seems that every player who ever pulled on the sacred shirt seems to start banging the goals in as soon as they leave AND IT USED DRIVE ME NUTS to hear their names read out on radio 5.

Liverpool and Man U.
Could have been the last player transferred between the two, i was only a kid as well but i remeber him as a very classy player.
Worst striker has to be Broughton, how he played in the premiership i will never know.

He was.

WSC recently did an article on the fact ...
