Neighbours or snails? :dim:

Misread the original post, didn't realise it was a UK thing...my mistake.

However my missus used to make them in the UK as well...no-one used to eat them apart from any Kiwi's that were there, but she still used to make them!

to be honest they look rather yummy and i would tuck in.
And harry snails not nieghbours, funny thing is that all of the people in our commune think the way we eat is strange, and today the kids were saying how much they like eating cows tounge at school, bizzare indeed.

I have just returned from a lunchtime pub session whilst working in Leeds and the locals were going crazy for the local delicacy:

Warm pork pie served with mushy peas topped with mint sauce.

Has anyone encountered a stanger regional dish on thier tavels around the UK?

In Scotland Ive had deep fried kitkat, deep fried pizza and deep fried cheesburger (burger and cheese covered in batter and deep fried). In Edinburgh, fish supper is only haddock and they ask you if you want salt and sauce - the sauce is a mixture of vinegar and brown sauce I think. That's a local speciality.

In China Ive had the worst dish you can imagine - sea cucumber (I had to eat it to show respect to my hosts - it was like eating a slimy sausage covered in snot with the texture of jelly). Ive also eaten a weird cabbage dish in Moscow (but with the vodka its OK). In Munich it's all about fatty meat and dumplings, which is delicious.

I'll give you Scotland (its yours if you want it), but the others

I've eaten snails in the Basque Country and enjoyed the meal although you have to eat quite a few of the little buggers to get a decent amount of protein.
On the subject of strange food my cousin- in- law in Annonay(near Lyon)once told his visiting teenage relatives from Worcester that the pentard(or guinea foul)which they'd just enjoyed was in fact snake-cue visit to the lav etc:)
My wife once tried something similar on me many years ago telling me that the steak which I'd just polished off was in fact horsemeat.Tasted marvellous!

How about a strange regional drink popular in both Australia and southern England ? Lager I think they call it.

Pie and peas is considered quite a delicacy up here in Yorkshire. As is 'scraps' which is the bits of fish batter that have fallen off in the frying process and gathered up and served in a teacake (which is actually a buttered roll).
