Strange regional dishes.

Mad Cyril

The Fresh Prince of Belfairs⭐⭐🦐
I have just returned from a lunchtime pub session whilst working in Leeds and the locals were going crazy for the local delicacy:

Warm pork pie served with mushy peas topped with mint sauce.

Has anyone encountered a stanger regional dish on thier tavels around the UK?

Wiganers like their pies with "pea wet", the watery juice from mushy peas.

Absolutely vile.

The father in law is a big fan of 'bobbies bonnet pea wet'. Which is a steak pie that looks like a Coppers helmet, drizzled in the rank pea juice.

Hardly stranger but Lancashire Hot Pot when I was(briefly)a Postgraduate student in Manchester was superb.
Why can't you get it anywhere down South?

yep, regularly have hotpot with the inlaws, it's magnificent! hotpot, mashed turnips and carrots, red cabbage and pickles and a bread roll. Superb!

I guess there's not a lot of difference over the good old Cockerney favourite of Pie (or eels), Mash & Liquor.

I will try anything once but nothing can induce me ever to attempt to eat tripe again. :puke

It is bad enough that you talk it most of the time H without you having to eat it to mate.

;)

When I was in Bradford on a course years ago all the locals were eating a cake called Parkin which is basically a stale sponge cake. I had some and it was rough.

You could add bubble and squeak to that list too.It was a favourite of my(and Shrimpero's old man).He was also fond of bread and dripping too.Never could work out the attraction of days old fat myself.

Cullen Skink is a fairly popular winter lunchtime meal in Northern Scotland. It's essentially haddock soup with a few herbs and spices thrown in and is absolutely delicious.

should have gone to aire bar, run by a southend bird that i know very well :)

To be fair I think that except for Scotland, the strangest dish has to be jellied eels, 2 pie, mash + liquor!! still love it (except for the eel which im not brave enough for)

I can vouch for that. Had some in Mallaig, and it was top notch!

No thread on bizarre regional dishes is quite complete without Laverbread. It's basically seaweed, usually fried in butter and served on toast. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it worked for me.

Finally, and back to Scotland, the most Scottish dish possible. Imagine two Scottish favourites in one, and that's what I found ion a small cafe in Fort Augustus. Deep fried battered Haggis! After a brisk stroll in the wet (while nursing the previous night's hangover) it certainly hit the spot.

In Scotland Ive had deep fried kitkat, deep fried pizza and deep fried cheesburger (burger and cheese covered in batter and deep fried). In Edinburgh, fish supper is only haddock and they ask you if you want salt and sauce - the sauce is a mixture of vinegar and brown sauce I think. That's a local speciality.

In China Ive had the worst dish you can imagine - sea cucumber (I had to eat it to show respect to my hosts - it was like eating a slimy sausage covered in snot with the texture of jelly). Ive also eaten a weird cabbage dish in Moscow (but with the vodka its OK). In Munich it's all about fatty meat and dumplings, which is delicious.

I smelt, but not ate, Durian whilst in Thailand. Smells like vomit mixed with baby **** and is banned from many hotels.
It is true it smells rank but the taste is ok, in fact i have even brought Durian Sweets, and as long as you try not to smell them then they taste great.

Black Pudding and White Pudding are yum.

I think the only regional dish i would have to think twice about is tripe.

I love Pie, Mash and Liquor especially with Chilli vinegar.
