Stoke vs Southend Official Match Thread

Full time 1-1

And what a huge point this could be.

Again great support from the traveling faithful who were very loud after we scored against 20,000+ Stoke fans

Great point with 14 available senior players and with a shuffled side that finished with a few players out of position.

Shame about QPR, but a win against them on Friday night and happy days.

4 point from 2 hard away games i for one would have never dreamed it .

Excellent result. Leeds, Hull and Barnsley all loosing this weekend we couldnt have had a better week (ok apart from a win today!) but feels like a win after equalising. Looking forward to hearing feedback about Foran, set up the goal which is great. Next weeks match against QPR is massive there is no reason why we cant do it

23,017 - their biggest gate of the season, down to reduced ticket prices I believe.

Correct, although from what I heard on the match commentary they had to buy so many papers to get the tokens that it might not have been that much value for money lol, that said it definatly worked!!

Delighted with a point and to come back again from 1-0 down.

Come on Southend, keep this going only 4 points from 21st now.

The faith is being kept!

Ex SUFC that also scored today:-

Jay Smith @ Notts County (2)
Tes Bramble @ Stockport (33)
Leon Cort @ Crystal Palace (33)
Lawrie Dudfield @ Notts County (61)
Billy Paynter @ Bradford City (89)

Luke Guttridge @ Leyton Orient (yellow card 80)

I was waiting for a che wilson goal, brentford won today 3-0 which is rare for them, che must have changed the way they play!

A really good result for us, only 6 points of 18th now!!!

Starting to get annoyed with all these other teams just being a bunch of thugs. Everytime we got into their half they tried to bring us down, again amazed how they didn't get a sending off, especially in the first half.

I was going to do a brief match report but instead decided to nick this from another forum posted by a good friend who got us the box for the day.

"What a day. Today we joined the prawn sandwich brigade for the day. My company has a box at Stoke, so I got it for three mates from school, a couple of their kids and a couple of good friends. We got there at midday, got into the box at 1230, had a really nice meal, and I'd struck a deal with Tilly that if we didn't lose he would come up and see us after the game, so when he walked out onto the pitch, with his mobile in his hand, I rung him to let him know where we were, and he gave us all a wave and a few words on the phone.

As for the game, we started very confidently, and it was very much against the run of play, because all Stoke had been kicking was our players and not the ball, when they scored with their first shot. Then we lost our left back who landed very badly and picked up what looks like a very nasty groin injury, so we bought on Richie Foran to play at left midfield, switched Mark Gower into centre midfield, and placed Lewis Hunt at a very unfamiliar left back role. Obviously this affected our momentum, but I am pleased to say we were still very much in with a shout come the half time whistle. Apparantly there was a fracar in the tunnelk, as the game got increrasingly more nasty, with Stoke diving in with some very suspect challenges.

However every team has their twenty minute spell, and Stokes was the first twenty minutes. However despite alot of pressure, numerous corners, and oodles of possession, we held out with some resolute, strong, and at times lucky defending. The third component hasn't been around much this season, but the ball is starting to run for us a bit, and we seem to be growing in confidence on the back of it.

We looked stronger and again, we started to grow our percentage of possession and finally started to get some end product. Gower and MAher worked tirelessly, and JCR started getting behaind his defender and Stoke looked wobbly.

The best move of the match found the ball getting to Foran on the right hand corner of the box, and an excellent cross ball had "FINISH ME" written all over and Freddy obliged. Huge relief and celebrations followed, and from that point if there was going to be a winner they were wearing blue. A couple more chances came and went, but in the end the point that, once again will surprise some people, goes onto our tally, and gives Leeds another problem came back to Essex.

Tilly kept his promise and bought Brushy with him and we met them down in reception and had a really good chat with them. Despite another injury, we will be working to use the loan window to bring someone in, that will be hugely popular IF it comes off. Personnally I don't think it will, however momentum is with us, and just like last season, we are now proving a hard team to beat.

Next Friday we have possibly our biggest game of the season, on Sky (Oh no!) against QPR at the Hall, but a win will close the gap on Hull above us, and put Leeds in the mire, if only!"

Oh no, we are on Sky.

Apparently beating Man Utd on Sky has been forgotten :)

Whats this obsession we never do well on Sky ? I cant remember us losing too many on TV over the last couple of years.

The loan signing i recone might be Chrisy Powell? I was thinking this last night, and if Tilly sid he would be hugely popular to D62SUBOY, then i think Chris Powell could be the man ?
