STAR WARS thread - for those who have seen it and want an outlet to talk about it!

Just seen it, and loved it. I wasn't bothered by Rey's quick ascension with her powers, what is mentioned several times is the mythology of the events we've already seen in the previous trilogy, she's heard tales of what jedi can do and tries stuff out. While a lot of people in our screening were whooping every time and old character reappeared, I liked the new characters, Rey a thoroughly modern female hero, Finn likability in spades and Kylo Ren, a character with real depth played by a fantastic actor. Yes it was fast paced but I thought it felt modern more than nostalgic. I want to see it a gain in a few weeks to take it in and make my mind up about just how much i like it.

Just seen it. Sadly underwhelmed - secret in Robot, superpowerful weapon that destroys planets, a hero that doesn't realise their force, son killing father. Christ, is it too hard to think of something new?

Cycle story telling, one of the old story telling traditions known to mankind but ok. Sometimes I think you like to be disappointed mate. Yes son killed father but mirrored dark killing light. I thought the starkiller base was a logical progression of technology.

:smiles:

However, god almighty does Kylo need some anger management classes. And don't be surprised if it turns out he killed Jacen and/Anakin Solo, seeing as it was Jacen that went Sith in the now-Legends line and Anakin died with Chewie. Anakin was the decent Jedi (both in that he wasn't a dick and was a good but not greatly skilled Jedi).

I wouldn't expect this to be honest, that stuff is non-canon now for a reason.

I do expect/hope
  Spoiler:
Supreme Leader Snoke to be revealed as Darth Plagueis (Palpatine's master)

Disagree - there are a million stories out there, especially in fantasy/SF when there are no earthly limits. When JJ took on Star Trek it was something new and exciting, sadly TFA was pretty much a rehash of A New Hope. It seemed more like an exercise in reminiscing than a new film. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it but for all its flash it still isnt a patch on 4,5,6.

Absolutely loved it. One of my favourite nods to the original films was 'Mos Eisley Cantina MK II', would love to have a session down there.

I think mine was the little rag doll Rey had at the beginning, dressed like an X-Wing pilot.

However, I think that was also very clever as a visual clue to her past.

That for me was the only thing that I didn't much like - I was happy with a lot of the nostalgic parallels to the first Star Wars, including the Death Star-like structure and the trench runs from the X-Wings to blow it up. But the idea of draining the power of the sun to power a planet-destroying beam wasn't Star Wars IMO, and belonged more in Star Trek.

The only other 2 plot points which had me thinking were:

1) How was Finn (a nervous rookie Stormtrooper) able to hold off Kylo Ren (an uncontrolled but powerful dark jedi) with a lightsabre? Is it because he's Force sensitive too? If so, there was no real allusion made to it like there was with Rey......if not, then how did he do it? He shouldn't really have been able to.

2) What was the ship that took in the Millennium Falcon when Rey and Finn were on it? Whose ship was it? Why were Han and Chewie there, how did they get there and how long had they been on it? What were the 2 gangs who were chasing Han and Chewie and how did THEY get on the ship/know he was there? That was a big plot hole for me.

Thos were the only real gripes though, nothing major at all. Still a 9/10 for me.

What did people think of Kylo Ren?

In answer:

1: Kind of agree but this is fantasy! My issue was that he was a stormtrooper, and according to parts 1-3 stormtroopers are supposed to be clones, and he looked nothing like the original. However they kind of answered that because when they said he was taken at a young age so maybe that is no longer the case.

2: This was actually answered in the film when Han Solo said that if his scanners could pick up the Millennium Falcon so could the First Order's. It doesn't completely answer it, but it gives an explanation of sorts.

Personally I loved it.

Oh, and Kylo Ren had a huge face.

Stormtroopers aren't clones. They were in the prequels but were recruits/conscripts in the time of the original trilogy and now seem to be raised from babies for the role at this point in time.

Loved it!!! I only saw the first one of the newer films and thought it wasn't a patch on the original three so didn't bother to watch the other two. The Force Awakens reminded me a lot of the original which I think was the premise of the film. Will definitely go to watch it again :thumbsup:

Just back from watching it. I'd give it a 7/10... Very, very enjoyable film and there were some brilliantly shot scenes (when the X-Wings are haring across the water to protect the outpost, for example) and some fantastically written/acted characters. Felt it was a little on the predictable side at times however and I do think it lacked something.

It'll be interesting to see what the new guy does with Episode 8 mind. Looper was a fairly underrated film with a really quite dark edge to it. If he can bring some of that to Abrams' foundations, then I think that could be every bit as good as the originals. I know those that've seen the script for it say it's excellent...

Saw it at the IMAX and it was awesome.

Very much a clone of Episode IV and intentionally so to reconnect to the first one, but can forgive that because it was soooo good. Lucas what the **** were you doing with the prequels? I watched them all the other week in preparation for this movie and they are an embarrassment in comparison to this. Watching Episodes 1 to 6 in order it was a relief to get to IV and the difference was astounding, and they were made 20 years earlier.

This one got back to its roots and by using the same mechanics. Poor girl finds plans in a robot and has to get plans to the rebels, the wise old character pops off to get the shields down and dies, X Wings attack a death star and even get a nice trench to fly down again.

My 8 year old was on the edge of his seat for most of it, first Start Wars movie he has seen in the cinema and he loved it.

I thought it was fantastic though, the only criticism I have is they didnt bring Luke into the story, but thats one for next time Im sure.

Just ventured onto IMDB, which gives it an 8.8 so most seem to enjoy it by the rating. However reading the comments and you would think it was the worst Star Wars film ever made, some even say that.

I get people may be disappointed in the fact its another death star and the fact it borrows plot lines from the other films, but even so it was still a good movie and runs rings around the prequels.

Ive only ever been to see one film twice at the cinema (Saving Private Ryan), but Id happily go see this one again.

Each to their own.

Loved it a lot.....I am a star wars need. ..geek...whatever you want to call me. I have a huge problem with this film. How did she just master the force...and light sabers in a few hours...complete bull hang. Every jedi ever has had a lifetime of training...nah **** that I'm just a jedi. Not happy.

Not happy or loved it a lot?

Ahh, that answers my question. I thought there'd be an answer, thanks...

Loved it a lot...not happy withone particular aspect. Although having slept on it I have concluded that aspect is diminishing my enjoyment of the film.....also another death star!!!!!! That's what gets dished up....The death star

Yep, pretty lazy script in some respects. I think as lot of people are giving it a free pass as its not Eps 1,2 & 3 - it's good but it could have been better.

After the huge unpopularity of I, II and III, they've clearly gone back to giving people what they want, which is something more akin to IV. Done with aplomb.

What will be very interesting is to see how VIII and IX go. If they start the next one with a battle on an ice planet then we know they really have run out of ideas, but I'm more inclined to think, having set the scene, they'll feel they can take things in a different direction.

Also, I know it is very difficult to divorce this from all the other films, but purely in that respect, it stands up well as a brilliant action movie on its own.

I sort of agree, but for me it did feel like a gateway for what follows next. So many of us wanted this film to be brilliant that we were maybe prepared to be a little lenient in out critiques?

I went back for a second viewing yesterday, this time round I was trying to focus on things I might have missed the first time.

There are some really funny lines, especially when Han and Fin are together. love the bit where they are in the snow and Chewie complains, and Han says "OH your cold???" Combined with Fins revelation that he was basically a toilet cleaner on the starkiller base.

I really liked Kylo Ren, again he was wuite funny at times. He reminded me not so much of Vader but Alan Rickmanns Sheriff Of Nottingham from the Kevin Costner Robin Hood. When he has another one of his tantrums after Rey escapes I like how two stormtroopers turn the corner, see he's smashing his lightsabre about and quickly do a U turn.

I thought Capt. Phasma/Gwendoline Christie was vastly under used, hope she wasn't killed off screen in the trash compactor. Poe also seemed really cool, with Han dead hopefully his role will be bigger next time. I think the important thing this movie did, which the prequels failed to do was to introduce a new set of characters and successfully make the audience give a **** about them. The writing was light years ahead of George Lucas's clunky efforts at conversation and humour.

Yes, groan ....another Death Star or mother ship that needed blowing up, they even seemed to be joking about that in the Resistance control room. Old guy standing next to Miles from LOST says "Another Death Star???" At least they didn't end on medal ceremony.

Phasma will be back in a big way for 8. Probably leading the charge on the rebels while Snoke and Ren hunt for Luke and Rey.

Speaking of Snoke, who was he? Was he the dude in the holograms or was that Sydrow? Or am I just being thick again?
