Quote[/b] ]I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, or if I am over-reacting
a bit, but did anyone who watched the Anglia football show on Sunday
morning find the sight of the Southend United Commercial Manager
proudly showing off his West Ham United badge very distastful?
Shouldn't we all (especially paid members of staff) be doing all we
can to promote the name of Southend United? Has anyone mentioned this
to the club themselves? Just wondered.

surely not?

Me neither. Can't see what all the fuss is about? Do we ban all people who are fans of other clubs? Do we ship out Adam Barrett (West Ham United), Kevin Maher (Liverpool), Darryl Flahavan (Southampton), etc.?

It is just a shame that , when filmed outside the reception at Roots Hall and so obviously working , Brian Wheeler couldn't be seen wearing the coat of the club that employs him.

I don't have a problem with him supporting West Ham , I have given him enough stick in the Spread about it, perhaps SUFC don't make coats in his size .

Didn't someone from the SUISC get a job in the office at the Orient and on day one took in a Southend mug for her tea. Barry Hearn saw it on her desk and threw it in the bin, smashing it!!

They do Scott, but they are only aimed at the right people at the right time.

Well I for one have got a problem with it. I'm sure if he needs a compass to get to East London, I'll supply him one. Bloody insult. Should keep his Hamsters activites behind closed doors especially taking his shilling from Southend United

Agreed. While we should accept fans from anywhere, it's just plain WRONG for an employee of this club to wear the crest of another team while acting for the club.

Not only are we a successful football club in our own right, but we're also a business with a brand.

Someone working at Orange is hardly going to do a TV interview wearing a Vodafone jacket are they?

Angry in Dagobah.

Mike you aren't being serious. Do you expect an employee from Microsoft to be wearing an Apple Mac badge.
It's unprofessional. Behave yourself.

SUFC EMPLOYEE SUPPORTS WEST HAM SHOCKER!

It ain't 'alf easy to get our knickers in a twist over nothing and priorities wrong. SUFC won the big game, have great shout at promotion and has a team that is passionate about the club. Rejoice and be happy. There is a difference between passionate and petty.

It was on The Championship aswell yesterday morning.
This is very disappointing. I have spoken to Brian a couple of times and he seems like a nice chap but I am also taking the business view ( see comments on Orange/Vodafone) , and do not think it very COMMERCIAL to be wearing WHU stuff during working hours for SUFC.

For anyone who understands these things, it does nothing for our brand and I would not be too happy if I were Betterview, Big Weekends or the Nike franchisers.

If Brian apologises ,I will personally buy him an appropriate coat to wear during working hours.

However, I do not expect every employee to support SUFC and what they do in their own time is up to them.

Dear Blues Fans

I have read with interest the remarks regarding the TV coverage of our game against Col******r and my showing of the West Ham badge.

I would like the opportunity to put the record straight and hopefully ease your concerns about my loyalties.
As you all know I arranged the beam back of the Col******r match here at Roots Hall and also arranged for a quantity of matchday programmes to be sent to the Club to sell before the game. Unfortunately Col******r were unable to deliver the programmes and therefore I had to drive to Chelmsford to collect them on Saturday morning. I received the phone call at 8.30, whilst having a lie in, and quickly threw some clothes on without giving it much thought as I hadn’t planned to get out of my car. The top I wore had the West Ham logo on as do most of my casual clothes and, as someone mentioned, it is not a secret that I support West Ham and I have experienced a lot of good humoured banter at Roots Hall as a result. I do not apologise for supporting the Hammers and do so because I was born in the east end.

Regardless of who I follow I can assure all Blues fans that I am as passionate about Southend and have the same feeling as any other Blues fan. Anyone who has witnessed my reaction to a Blues goal or a victory will back me up. In addition my partner is a fanatical Blues fan and I have pictures of both West Ham and Southend in my home.

On my way back to Southend I decided to call in at the club to deliver the matchday programmes and whilst doing so I was asked by the TV company if I could do a brief interview about the beam back. I agreed to do so but I was aware that I had the West Ham top on and I went back to my car to put on a coat to cover the badge to make sure that I did not show disrespect to the Blues faithful. Dave Scriven was with me and can confirm that I did a five minute interview about the beam back and the rivalry between the two clubs and the fact that the Essex derby was as strong as any other in the country. At the end of the interview the interviewer asked me to pull my coat aside to reveal the badge. I was reluctant to do so however he insisted even though I remarked that I would get into trouble. I did not think that it would be used against me and I asked him not to show it on TV. He assured me that it wouldn’t and I, stupidly, believed him. I have dealt with this guy on many occasions and he has always been true to his word-on this occasion he wasn’t.

I saw the programme on Sunday morning and was dismayed to see that all they showed was my badge. I should have known better than to trust the press and once again I apologise to anyone that may have been upset by my actions. I also got a lot of stick from my partner and have had to do some grovelling over the last 24 hours to get back in her good books-we’ve all been there I’m sure!

I expect to get stick on Friday when I am on the tannoy and perhaps I deserve it but, as I said before, I am totally committed to the Southend cause and will hopefully be so for a long time to come.

On a positive note can I thank all those that attended on Saturday at the beam back. It was a fantastic day and the atmosphere was tremendous. Hopefully we can generate the same noise levels on Friday night because we have gone a little bit quiet at home recently and I know that Tilly appreciates the vocal support especially when the team struggles against teams that are only here for a draw.
Make plenty of noise-see you all Friday.
Up the Blues!

Brian Wheeler-Commercial Manager

PS When can I collect my Southend coat?

Brian, I suspected it was a journalist getting an ''angle''.

Can I get away with getting you one of the cheap ones or do you want it to be a Nike one? Size?

And you have to promise to wear it!

For what it is worth I personally think its a disgrace. Is it any wonder that opposition fans sing "you all support West Ham"
Got to Roots Hall any match day and you will see people wearing West Ham coats, shirts etc, Last week I saw a couple of blokes in Arsenal clobber.
Yes the revenue is good for the club but we are Southend Utd not West Ham Arsenal or anyone else.

It was not good to see an article on the national TV station which depicted Southend Utd as everyones second club. In my opinion it made us some what of a laughing stock.

As for our very own Commerical manager wearing a West Ham coat

Is it only me that can see the irony here?
Mr Wheeler I think you are a top man but made a bad error the other day.

Genuine offer........ I will buy you a Southend coat if you dispose of your West ham one and promise never to wear any West Ham clobber while representing Southend Utd again. The promise will of course have to be made before KO on Friday against Scunthorpe

Never trust the media. The BBC filmed me and GNH doing in-depth interviews for Football Focus and we both , without each other's knowledge , told the reporter how Freddy Eastwood would make the difference and win the game for us .
What happened ?
The broadcast went out with us on the cutting-room floor and people with no affinity to football featured on the prog.
Am I bitter and twisted ? Too true.

Thank you Brian for your post.
Just remember the media never let the truth affect a good story.

On a proffessional level if the employee delivers does it matter ? Would a Millitant wearing Marxist badges get employed at the Liberal democrat Headquarters?

....perhaps that's a bad analogy.. as the Labour prime Minister is a Tory.

As Norman Tebbit said.... If you want to live in England you support the English Cricket team.

Benfleet Shrimp and Brian, is this a commercial opportunity as we present it to Brian on the pitch?

Benfleet Shrimp does this mean we are going 50/50 on the cost?
