You will have circumstances where someone travelling at 90mph on an empty motorway in the early hours of the morning in clear visibility would be liable for six points, when the fact is that it is very unlikely that they would threaten anyone's life or even their own

My dad got done doing 49 on the 40 limit part of A127 at 4 o'clock in the morning coming back from Burnley on a Tuesday night, madness!

These new rules seem like a good idea though.

Sounds like a good plan from the Government. If you're totally disregarding the limit hit them with a harsher fine. Common sense.

My issue is like BA's point above, and some of the earlier comments about motorways though, I mean the Arterial at 50 mph on a clear run is going to be an absolute joke. Of course, I'm not defending people that speed stupidly, as long as this will only be kept to those exceeding the limit by a relatively high amount.

Hubby has picked up some stupid ones, like doing dead on 40 at that stupid one on the A13 by Hadleigh Bathrooms because he thought it WAS 40 there, and it isn't, and also a hand held one along Pound Lane near where the limit changes, again at 40 in a 30. I, on the other hand, still have an old paper licence because it is clean and has never needed to be sent back!

What's this? Dangerous criminals being punished for breaking the law?

Sounds like a good idea to me.

The argument about the driver on the motorway in the small hours doesn't really seem to wash with me. I think you can make a very good case to suggest that the chances of the driver falling asleep at the wheel are higher and the chances of the driver being prepared for soemthing out of the ordinary happening seem less too.

No one has died because of speeding....
There have been accidents because people have lost control of their vehicles, because they have underestimated braking distances, because people have stepped out in front of them.
However speed highlights peoples limits, cornering too fast is an example, its the drivers judgement of his own ability to corner which is the main cause.

That said whilst the roads are littered with people who think they are better drivers than they they are, then the law needs to cater for this and this should be enforced.

Whilst they are at it could they please put more traffic cops out and actually catch people driving whilst on the phone, etc. Dangerous driving seems mailny to be a prosecution these days after an accident, True you see the odd one on the police camera tv shows, but a far greater presence and greater penalties may well deter . Camera's certainly don't
