Quote[/b] (Southampton Shrimper @ Dec. 11 2006,20:40)]Their ratings...

Darryl    6
Francis  6
Sodje    7
Spinner  7
Hammell  7
JCR        5
Hunt      6
McCormack     7
Gower     7
Bradbury  7
Freddy     8

They have players like Indiakez (Arguably Derby's best player in recent seasons) on their bench just proving the strength in depth they have over us.
That's cause he's only just fit again after a month's absence with injury. Saturday was his recall to the squad, I'd think he'll probably be in their 1st XI when he's 100% match-fit.

No idea how the Saints paper only gave JCR 5, OK there was still little end product but he was much improved from times I've seen him before.

I agree with you, Glasgow, I was wondering when someone would pick that up. I thought JCR was a threat all game and made some excellent runs. It's unusual for an outsider to rate him so low, as they normally don't pay attention to his lack of crossing ability! No way was he a 5!

You keep mentioning this perfectly good goal being disallowed, but the reason the goal was disallowed is the fact the Lino waved his flag as soon as your player got the ball which was quite a few seconds prior to the ball ending up in the net. So by the time the ref had seen the flag and blown for the foul. The ball was in the back of the net.

It was not a case the ref had made the decision all by himself and the fact the flag was waved before we could see a goal was possible. Which is why I was not concerned when the ball crossed the line as I had seen the flag waved.

I think it is time to drop this from your list of excuses!!
Half of our defenders had stopped well before the ball hit the net too as the flag was up and the ref had blown.

Having watched it again on the OS, I'm not sure that the linesman or ref were correct, but thats a difference issue.

Wasn't overly impressed with them today, just assumed it was a bad day at the office because reading their squad on the back of the programme showed the difference between the top of the division and the bottom end of the division. Better chances? Better than hitting the post and having a perfectly good goal dissallowed?

Lmao, ok buddy.
Hitting the post I agree, but can we sort this disallowed goal issue out?

The linesman's flag went up immediately. Whether it should is a moot point, but from where I was it looked correct. But, the players all saw it, heard the whistle and stopped playing, as should the player who finally put the ball in the net. The fact that he carried on after the whistle doesn't make it a disallowed goal. The whole scenario would have been played out differently if Daryl and the rest of the defence hadn't stopped.

yep i remember at the time thinking it was correct.. and the saints players didnt seem too fussed. looking at the replay its a little less clear but the linos flag went up straight away and so you cant say it was disallowed

Lee Bradbury one on one with your goalkeeper.

Eastwood spurning two glourious chances in the space of a minute, the second coming from the goal keepers save.

McCourmack's drive from the edge of the box that Sodje blocked.

Eastwood's effort which he tried to bend in the far post ala McCourmack, which was well saved.

Compared with you lot hitting the post from outside the area. The goal was never disallowed because the flagging and the whistle went before you fella put it in. The guy should have been booked following the letter of the law.

Don't forget the nearest thing JCR ever has to scoring a goal with that cross-shot of his just before he got subbed!!!!

I don't think that was a cross/shot. I think he meant it, and was very unlucky not to score.

Also, if you look closely, using Sky+ you can clearly see Rasiak uses his hand to control the ball and blast it into the net ...

Also, where Bradbury dragged the ball back from the touch line and riffled it over the bar.

Chances are irrelevant unless you score them.

We had some ridiculously easy chances late on where Bradbury had too much time if anything, and Freddy could have squared the ball for an open goal on one occasion.

You guys hit the post and had a few other chances of your own.

I don't really buy any argument of "we deserved to win because we had more chances". Surely shooting is part of the game?! Well buy a better striker then!

The only way to resolve this dispute is to appeal to a neutral party and ask for their opinion on the game. So here is what Brian Doogan of The Times thought:

Southend 2 Southampton 1: Eastwood trickery denies Saints

Brian Doogan at Roots Hall

A PASSIONATE performance capped with brilliant goals by Freddy Eastwood and Alan McCormack yielded Southend’s first victory in 18 matches. Whatever the shock value, the points were richly deserved, Southampton never coming to dominate play as they might have expected.
“We had chances but Southend battled and blocked and scrapped and hung in there, and I never thought we were in control of the game,” acknowledged George Burley, the Southampton manager.

"Nuff sed".
