Here's my take on the jolly japery of last night. As ever, it's not based on fact, or even reality, but simply how I felt at the time.

I think you are being incredibly harsh on the referee. I didn't get a programme (they had all been sold by the time I had negotiated the imbeciles trying to man the turnstiles) but I believe it was Michael Smith from Basildon. He wasn't wonderful but I thought he refereed the match consistently and fairly and I would be surprised if his assessment wasn't the right side of average. You suggest he couldn't wait to caution Martin; not only could he wait, he did wait, having warned him a couple of times in the first half. He looked like he was cautioning for persistent misconduct. In fact had he been minded to, he could have easily dismissed Martin for a head to head confrontation. It is rare in that situation to find one of the two players cautioned for adopting an agressive attitude and the other not.

Your comments about the discussion with the Assessor (who was it by the way?) are interesting (to me, anyway). If he was actually assessing the match official it is poor practice to discuss his views with all and sundry before going through things with the referee himself. If of couse he was merely an "off duty" assessor sharing his opinion and being supportive of a colleague, I guess that's understandable. The assessor's comments that mistakes have to be put into context of age is ridiculous. He is a Level 3 and that is the context he should be judged in.

(ps best wishes with your personal circumstances)

Really enjoyed the game, showed the Essex Senior cup is worthwhile for all teams,Entrance fee was very reasonable too.Draw for next round on BBC Essex on Friday.

I too really enjoyed the game which for two quid entrance fee deserved better home support. Good noisy away support helped though.

On the subject of JCH he driffed in and out of the game but his 2nd goal was well taken from the right wing. There may be a question mark over his attitude though, which may be why his appearances have so far been limited.
