Breaking News Southend United sign Ian Joyce

Just asked a Watford fan at work about Joyce. Said he'd only vaguely heard of him, thinks he was fourth string keeper last season.

Joyce himself seems rather enthusiastic though, citing Southend United, Watford and Steve Mildenhall all as 'great'.

Using Great is better than awesome....

I asked a few people in the office here and having carefully negotiated the language barrier and asking if they had heard of the soccer netminder Ian Joyce they all said no.

He has tighter curls than me! Perhaps Slipper and myself should start a Joyce Head-pubes Society

Grays fan at work , heard that Joyce was superb in training but never got a look as he was only on loan and there for back up and the Grays No 1 had done nowt wrong to warrant being dropped.

Says he could end up being a very good signing

He's got, like, an awesome GAA average! GO BLUE-SHRIMPS GO!!

Yeah is is awsome here, although our wing attack is looking a bit weak right now. Is it true we get our very own personalised soccer ball here?

I liked in his interview where he mentioned the "rooster".

He should have his own column on the official site.

Tilly is quoted in the Echo as saying "He is the third or fourth choice for the American national side".

Has anyone got any proof of this?

I don't want to suggest Tilly was duped by an agent hyping up a player, but as far as I can see the bloke hasn't ever played a professional game. Training with the national team hardly means he was ahead of Brad Friedel, Tim Howard, Kasey Keller and probably half a dozen others. The goalkeepers for their qualifier against Barbados were Brad Guzan and Chris Seitz.

I'd hate to think Tilly has just signed him because the agent made him sound good. I suppose it doesn't matter too much because he's probably only third choice behind Clark Masters.

Yeah he wasn't in the actual squad for the game at Wembley so it's a bit misleading to suggest that he's third or fourth choice.

He was here for a day last season and I'm sure we've spoken to Grays about him so I doubt he was signed purely because of anything his agent has told us. He's cheap, he's based in the South-East and he's willing to sign a one year deal with no promises of first team football. Therefore he's ticked all the boxes that Tilly was likely to be looking for.

You forgot to mention the "twice the hight of the previous incumbent" box...

Enthusiasm wins you many friends....lets give him a chance. Could turn out to be the next Friedel.

Looked during the warm-up to be a bit better at kicking than Clarke Masters this evening!
