TV Highlights Southend United FC v Liverpool FC 1979

I was there that night, I remember wrapping up warm and walking to the ground with my parents from our home in Westcliff. I stood right at the front in the west stand near where it joined the old south. I can’t believe that was over 45 years ago!!

I’m still in the west but a few rows back now and of course seated.

Can’t wait for the upcoming season, come on you Blues :LoyalSupporter: :LoyalSupporter: :LoyalSupporter:

All ticket game and they only had 2 of the 6 turnstiles open at the top of the South Bank, me and me bruv finally got in 10 minutes before half time just as the police forced open the exit gates to let in everyone else who were still queuing outside.

Didn't get in till after 20 min, on terrace. What a game. Collins Morris turned E Hughes inside out. He really looked as if he wanted to be somewhere else.

I didn't have the trouble getting in that some seem to have had but, boy was it cold on the South Bank. I do remember that I had to walk in from Central Avenue, where we living at the time, as the buses weren't running on my route, so I got there early. Still got the programme of course.

I queued outside the south Bank with dad and brother. Couldn't get in so left near HT had some chips at the place opposite the plough then was allowed to stay up late to watch the highlights on Sportsnight!

Great night, I was 15 at the time and went with my dad. We were in the West and it was rammed, a strong Liverpool team and certainly a leveller in the conditions and home advantage. Great memory and thanks to my dad for taking me and my love for Southend United FC for all these years. RIP dad and thanks for the memories 🙏 🙏 👍:LoyalSupporter:

I too was 15 at the time. I had a season ticket, so got my two tickets, my brother in law asked for the other and since it meant he'd drive, rather than getting the train seemed a good idea. Didn't turn out a such, as when I suggested we should leave at 5 pm to get parked, he said nonsense. So we didn't leave until 5.45pm, took ages to get parked, then hit the queue to get into the South Bank. Got in and I spent the game standing on a milk churn under the old scoreboard to see. Missed the first 20 minutes and I have no idea what a milk churn was doing inside the ground!

Was there with my dad and brother, both sadly passed away now. Roads were lethal getting to the ground. Fantastic night. What memories. Would never be played nowadays in those conditions and with a crowd as packed as that. More the pity.

Yes, was there with my late Dad. Remember we parked in Prittlewell Chase and as we walked to the ground my Dad said 'I don't think this will be played tonight'. Of course it was and, as you rightly say, wouldn't happen nowadays but a night to always remember.
