Southend United close to completing loan signing of John-Joe O'Toole from Northampton

HIs favoured position is the number 10 position though, thats what is puzzling.

With Deegan leaving its one out and one in, he clearly doesnt rate Clifford for whatever reason.

As a Southend fan, I always happily welcome new signings and obviously will back JJ o'toole to do well here. But the question is do we really need another midfielder? Myself and others on here would rather see Clifford get more games in, talking about Clifford him and Brown must have had a fall out or something because something strange is going on there. Finally how on earth Phil Brown hasn't bring in a striker as of yet is beyond me, sometimes i really wonder what goes through his mind, and also where does this leave Jack Payne?.....

Is he? I thought it was still up in the air?

Then why bring on Clifford if he clearly doesn't rate him?

With Leonard out and Deegan not accepting an offer to stay something had to be done, but very concerned it is this. I'd give him a month but only behind Clifford in the order of things.................Still think a striker is a higher priority !!!

Perhaps Brown is looking to size up O'Toole as a potential replacement for Jack Payne who is apparently being watched by Reading and also Bournemouth and Watford - see article in the Southend 'News Now' page.

I see the other thread poll is an overwhelming 80%-odd in favour of NOT having him.

Wow.

It's clear what will happen then... the expectations of us will be zero. He'll have to do very little to exceed those expectations. He'll score a debut hat trick and clearly will go on to be one of our most fondly remembered players. Ever.

Jonjo comes on in the 75th receives his first touch then quickly turns and completes a magnificent one two with Phil,as JJ runs up the wing Phil can be heard screaming "hold you pillock I told you sit in front of defence" JJ cuts inside with Phil now in arrest mode as he can only see 10 defending Bents goal, meanwhile JJ beats the Town keeper with a stunning 30 yard swerved when Phil immediately subs him and orders every player "park the effing bus":stunned:

It really wouldnt surprise me if Brown dropped the man he called "his little magician" for somebody new with a bad attitude problem and it wouldnt be the first time he has talked up a player and then dismissed him (Barnard, Clifford, Payne previously). Not content with a 3 match run he seems to be possibly over his man-flu and back to his tinkering self again.
That said nothing is proven yet but I do fear the worst.

I have nothing against O'Toole and had much time for Ryan Hall and Ricky Otto and other players with dubious behavioural issues but I would be miffed if our little magician made way for O'Toole. It does seem to be him or him for me.

I do have sympathy though in looking for goalscoring midfielders. Clearly playing strikers with the current set up isnt working. You could probably play Rooney up top and he would struggle. I have no issue with 4-5-1 if the midfield can all chip in, with goals from defence but we seem to have to rely on the former and never ever seem to get any nowadays from the latter. Anyone remember how important Barrett, Phillips and Clarke were?

My view at the moment though is do not tinker Mr Brown. Your track record is not good and at the moment you are going to look a right prat (ok more of a prat) if you drop your little magician. He might just turn you into a frog if you do

There is the following option - which actually seems quite attacking to me ...

Corr
Payne O'Toole
Timlin Leonard Worrell

Just a thought

O'Toole should and could play at a much higher level- but attitude and fitness have been in the way for some time.
However he has the ability- and maybe the attitude and fitness can be addressed in which case we have a great signing that could make all the difference.
If his attitude and fitness were right then there would be zero chance of a L2 club getting him.
In the end you have a chance of addressing attitude and fitness, but if you haven't got the talent then whatever you do you can't create it.
In a way the fact we have sufficient midfielders anyway makes this a bet worth taking in my view- maybe we don't have so much to lose and much to gain.
There is much talk about lack of strikers but it is clear that PB prefers one up front- we have Corr, Coulthurst and soon Barnard with Williams and Layne potentially soon ready for the bench. So maybe its not as desperate- what makes it appear so is lack of goals. But that is partly about finishing and partly about creating more clear cut opportunities- maybe therefore having the likes of Worrall, Hurst, O'Toole and Payne is the way to do that- and as we know injuries mean you don't get the chance to play them all much of the time anyway

One he hasnt come in yet and two if he does then I will welcome another body for the squad . How offen have we had a paper thin squad .Looks like this season will be different . Lots of players to call on . Sounds good to me

Why oh why are we filling our squad with more midfiekders when we require some goal sciring forwards? We have a limited budget so this loan signing means one less forward. This possible signing and the fsct we currently have 4 right suded centre backs baffles me. However the most baffling thing remains the season long loan signing of Shaq. Did anyone actually watch him play agajnst 'grown-ups' before committing to him?
