Southend United Boss on Goalkeeping option

Barry.C

Manager⭐⭐🦐
OUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher says it could be tough to find a goalkeeper willing to come to the club without guaranteed first team football.

Maher looks certain to start Nick Hayes between the sticks against Rochdale on Saturday with goalkeeping coach Anssi Jaakkola acting as back up following the end of Nathan Harness’ loan spell from MK Do

And Maher is unsure if he will be able to sign another shot-stopper.

“It’s not always easy to get someone in,” said Maher.

“Nick’s come in and will hopefully make the shirt his own.

“Being the number one keeper at the minute he’s going to play and trying to get someone in of the calibre we want isn’t always easy.

“We’ll have a look and if we think it’s right to bring someone in then we will do.”

The Shrimpers are also without Collin Andeng Ndi who looks set to miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.

Don't think there's really any transfer action needed here other than to prepare a just-in-case list of young goalies who are 3rd choice or playing in the U21s for Championship clubs. Not sure Anssi will want to be anything other than an emergency option, but if Hayes gets injured I'm sure as in the past (Adam Federici!) we'll be able to get someone from that level in for a month or two with the promise of first-team football.

With any luck, Colin recovers well and we'll then be in the enviable position of having two good keepers competing to be between the sticks next season.

If we can find a younger keeper a few steps below with a bit of potential, I’d be more inclined to take a punt on them as number 2 until the end of the season. Then loan them out once we’re back to Hayes and Collin next season.

He's very slight build - if Jaskilinen is still reasonable I'd agree with Kev and go with him on the bench
He retired in the 22/23 season. Is 37.
I haven’t seen him- maybe he’s now 20st- doubt it. It’s difficult to believe it’s possible to get a more capable backup at this level.

I suspect he’s reluctant to formally announce he’s un-retiring. He’s probably committed to being a coach.

Secretly if called upon as with Martin the buzz would be irresistible. Anyway first step he’s been registered and clearly he’s agreed to that presumably because he feels he can do a job if called upon.

He’s 6’4”- has he still got the man bun?

Which would work except if Hayes gets injured we have in goal a young goalkeeper from a few steps below…

Which is arguably better than having a soon to be 38 year old in goal who hasn’t played regularly in 4 years…

3 senior keepers on the books seems a bit mad at this level, especially as we could get a loan in at any time if we needed to.

Hes also extremely unmatch fit which he has realised. He would struggle with 90 match mins.
That's certainly true. However, its also not uncommon amongst goalkeepers who sometimes have to wait entire seasons to get a chance to play (of course having a reserve side would help a bit). If he's been keeping himself physically fit though, then he might be a good option still.

Its presumably only to cover 1 match anyway if Hayes gets injured during or in the buildup to a game and then re-evaluate it. If he was up to scratch and comfortable then stick with or else get a loanee at that point to move forward until Hayes is back.
