TV Highlights Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic F A Cup 1st Round Highlights

Watched the last goal a few times now and I think both are at fault. Taylor makes a terrible headed clearance but at that point Collin is already coming off his line when he has 3 defenders in front of him, and he gives himself a terrible angle to be caught out. Moments change games and both players made a bad decision with clearly not much communication between them. That said, putting it into perspective, they've played 120 minutes+ against a fitter side and fatigue plays a part in decision making. It's football and it happens. More vital to get there things right in the league where it matters most.
Just out of interest why would Charlton players be any fitter than ours ? Better maybe but there’s no reason they would or should be fitter

Yes, but apart from that, what have the Romans, sorry Charlton, .............?

Oh, never mind.
Better travel arrangements for away games incoporating luxury, high end over nights, all for a more rest and pre/post game setup promting player health. I am sure lots of small stuff adding up.

Yeah to be honest we won’t meet a team down here with the size/physicality of Charlton but it did highlight where our current back 3 do lack savvy/strength/experience. I’m sure as you say we’ll be looking for rhe “next Kensdale” and someone confident in bringing the ball out. While people knock Collin though they should consider, no real “leaders” amongst our current CB’s so that has an impact on the whole unit, organisation etc.
I agree that we do miss a real commanding physical presence at CB was something I had hoped we would have been able to bring in pre season, not a work in progress, but the finished article, but we all know what happened there.
However having said that it wouldn't have been easy to fit the bill by the criteria of what we look for.
The requirement for them to be tall with a turn of pace, be comfortable on the ball with a pass in them (think of those we have had on loan) and also have strength and experience to boot, if available are going to cost and most likely playing further up the pyramid.
So if there is not going to be an element of trade off with an individual's skill set and arguably an adjustment to how we play (not sure that would happen) it's going to cost us to bring the 'right one' in or we have to continue to try and develop them and that takes time with no guarantee of success, then again paying a large fee and wages (by our standards anyway) doesn't come without it's risks.
We do need to improve in this area and that can not be denied or undervalued as to the positive impact it could have by the end of the season.

I think the criticism of Collin for the 4th goal is way over the top. Taylor, who has been superb for us, heads it straight into their strikers path. If Collin then stays still as some say the striker will be all alone in the box with no pressure on him. at least Collin makes him think and adjust. It's a fine finish. I know Collin in the current scapegoat, but not every goal conceded is because the keeper ****ed up. We took a side 2 divisions above into added time at the end of extra time. that's an achievement and we were superb. I really feel like Collin gets far too much criticism

Criticising the keeper as the last line of defence is an easy cop out. Anywhere else on the pitch when a mistake is made, their colleagues can get them out of trouble and cover so it's soon forgotten. What does concern me is the way our defender consistently fail to make any attempt to challenge attacking opponents for aerial balls into our box. It didn't just happen for Charlton's first two yesterday, it's happened far too regularly this season. The two we gave in our recent home gave against Maidenhead for example. It seems to some, if the ball goes into the net it must only be the keepers fault!!!!

This was my take too. I don't think enough credit has been given to the striker. It was a huge moment in the game, last minute and he tucked it away. Plenty of strikers would have lost their composure and blazed it over the bar, he kept his cool and scored. Collin trying to put him off may have led to him missing, unfortunately it didn't.

Better training facilties, better pre-season, minimal Sat-Tues games, bigger squad to rotate players. Our pitch is also quite heavy and that's what our guys are recovering from each week. It's not a criticism, just factual. That said, taking these things into consideration, what an incredible performance from our lads.

I still think we need a big experienced centre back who is a leader and strikes fear into opposition attackers. Might’ve made the difference yesterday. Crowther is coming on well and Taylor had a decent performance, 4th goal and the mistake leading to them hitting the bar aside. You’d hope someone like that’s on the radar? I know maybe not available now but in Jan to aid us in the run-in.
Why experienced?

The defence looked better with Lopata back there than Coulson.

Yes, that finish was magnificent, surprised so few people have acknowledged this. Doubt there’s any player at our level who would have the technical ability to score like that.

No way on this earth is Collin to blame for that 4th goal. **** poor defending, simple as that.

If he called to come and collect the ball, then no he's not at fault at all.

I'm not convinced he did, look at the direction and flight of the ball in to the box, that would have bounced once into the arms of Collin.

Taylors header was poor, but as I said elsewhere, as a centre back in that position, you'd be crying out for your keeper to call for that ball so you can just duck of it and see it home.

Let's hope they all learn from it.

I just meant someone who could organise really, help the likes of Crowther along. That’s usually someone with games under their belt. I’m not talking PB level experience. They ideally wouldn’t be on a zimmer frame.
