Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-3 Portsmouth FC

Obviously, a heartening, encouraging fightback when all looked lost. Hope we can build on this but 2 points from the last five games has put us in a potentially dangerous situation. There are five L1 games midweek, two of which involve four teams below us, so the gap will inevitably close.
The thing is that the four games from Charlton through to Barnsley were seen by many on here as the ones that would sign our FL1 death warrant as we were pretty much expected to lose them all. So, a point at Charlton and a point today, against two sides battling for promotion ain't too shabby. Admittedly Doncaster was grim, but we're Southend for goodness sake. Accy next and then Bransley. If can get two points from those games then we're still in the mix for staying up.

It felt like it at the end!

The man Cox is definitely on fire! What a comeback that was, and such a performance by Cox - the proverbial game of two halves.

As others have said, Klass was quality when he came on and we truly saw what CP had alluded to when he brought him back into the forefront of the squad a few weeks ago. I think people are being a little too harsh on Hart, put in a great cross for Cox's 1st and tried hard, just not very successfully. Compare that effort and commitment with Mantom for a moment.

1st goal apart, I thought Bishop had a good game, and I was pleased to see us playing a more traditional 4-4-2 from the start though there is not a shadow of a doubt that midfield is still where our problems are. Why are two players going for so many balls in the air, does no-one talk to each other anymore?

Bishop - 7, growing in composure, imagine what a difference if he had a defence in front of him that he had full confidence in
Bwomono - 6, solid, put in a great block in those final frenetic moments, offered himself as an outlet so many times yet often over looked
Moore - 7, felt he didn't quite have the trust in Turner that he does in White, and look forward to seeing him forge a strong partnership with Lennon soon
Turner - 6, thought the old fella did ok, read the game well just can't always get his legs to do what he wants them to
Hart - 5, not as bad as some have said
Kightly - 6, ran himself ragged, not quite sure why he was kept on 10 minutes after he did his groin and a full 5 minutes after he signalled to the bench that he needed to come off
Dieng - 6, needs a stronger player alongside, put himself about a lot, looked better with Klass
Mantom - 4, really poor, he's not a captain and time CP realised that. The ironic cheer when he went off will have done his confidence no good at all though - has our crowd learnt nothing?
McLaughlin - 6, good to see him have a couple of those characteristic runs through the middle at pace, and a shot from distance, looked more like the Macca of old at times
Cox - 10, MOTM, a thorough and complete performance from our main man. Of late he's been the player who has never given up, and today characterised that, delighted for him
Humphrys - 6, can't really mark him higher as he wasn't on long, and it was during our poor period

Subs:
Klass for Humphrys - 8, a really promising performance, played the ball out of defence through midfield and found those cross pitch passes. Keep that up and he'll do very nicely
Hutchinson for Mantom - 6, did ok when he came on
Wabo for Kightly - 6, again, did ok when he came on

I think Kenny Jackets must have forgotten the objective of the game - I mean, why did he sub off their best players? Helped us out no end!

Think your ratings are fair, however regarding the reaction when Mantom was subbed, what did you expect?

It was one of the worst performances I've seen in a long time, and whilst I can take players being off form; some of the things he did today wouldn't have got him in the starting 11 of a Sunday league team!!

If he can't take that sort of reaction after that display, he shouldn't be playing professional football

Worth noting how much more control of the game we had when we went with the 5 in midfield instead of 4... Playing 1 up top isn't always negative!

I just don't agree with it, he is clearly a confidence player, as many are, and that reaction is not going to help. It's the poisonous atmosphere at Roots Hall, it's embarrassing sometimes.

Wonderful comeback well done the lads and especially Chris Powells excellent management, wise approach at half time. We played some really good football at times

Bishop 7 Maybe slightly at fault for the push out straight for their first goal, but the
defending leading up to it was crass. Nice word crass, Love his confidence for
coming and claiming the high balls especially , which is rare for us to see, plus a
command of his box, good prospect

Bwomono 8 Thought he played pretty well against Donny. Excellent today , a real threat
covered well, they didnt put his wing under pressure. Big hug from Sir CP at
the end , and I would have given the man hug too. Takes too much daft stick
on here. Developing really well.

Moore 8 Another good performance, excellent at this level and maybe higher , sadly
likely to miss him next year as he steps up, would be a great signing
. In a strange way reminds me of the kind of passion and commitment
Owen Farrell gives

Turner 7 A very experienced performer, one of the few who can defend the ball in the
air
and gave us confidence to play football, despite the legs going , a sturdy
performance, we need all his experience, I would keep him another year

Hart 6 Not as strong as Hendrie, Again like so many these days better at going
forward, and did put in that key cross, but otherwise gets caught out of
position too easily and
tends to fly into to many mistimed tackles. A very mixed bag of goods and
evils today, but still learning, might get batter after this?

Mantom 6 started well with some control over the game from midfield some neat
passes and interchanges but still makes some critical errors , that attempt at
a header was diabolical, but still lets not forget the goals hes got and can
pose a threat going forward

Dieng 7 Remains something of an enigma. We know he has some considerable craft
and skill when applied, also one of the few able to win the ball in the air,
skilful flick on for Coxys hat trick.

Mc Laughlin 5 Still woefully out of form, frustrated by his own inability at the moment to
kick a football properly and where he wants it to go. Not quite as defensively
sound as he could be and where was he in terms of taking people on
down the wing

Kightly 6 Better effort , did push to try to put pressure on and showed glimpses of
his class, tends though to still leave Hart to get on with it at times , but its
goodbye and thanks from me at end of season if can be arranged

Klass 8 Best game in our shirt so far. Calm , measured, controlled key aspects of
the game, able to look up under big pressure, excellent pass to Turner in
the Box, who should have scored in first half, Can be lethargic and not
blessed with any pace, but again excellent improving performance from the lad, more please

Humphries and Wabo little chance to impress, hope the dead leg improves quickly
for Humph, loved to see Wabo get a chance, the look on his face made me
feel 20 years younger and he gave it a go

COXY 20 YOU beauty, what an outstanding show of craft and class, 20 goals a season, c,
mon

It would also be good if we could actually tackle a bit, manage a set piece and win just the occasional header, so that we dont concede possession so often from the air

Perhaps he should have a chat with Kevin Maher, who recently said in an interview that he started his Roots Hall career badly but turned it around.

What an crazy game! We were embarrassingly poor at 3-0 yet showed real character to drag ourselves back in it. At 3-0 I was ready to join the 'Powell out' brigade. TBF he's shown he can motivate today and deserves more time.

Ratings are really hard, after 30 mins I'd have everyone other than Cox and perhaps Humphrys at 5 or less. After that, perhaps having nothing to lose, the players showed what they're capable of.

Bishop 7 - Perhaps at fault for the first, though I did think Elvis sliding in put him off. Excellent second half, what a prospect as a teenager.

Bwomono 7 - Exposed in the first 30 mins, he grew into the game and provided an attacking threat in the second half.
Moore 5 - Not his best game today, shaky early doors.
Turner 5 - Still looks a bit of a liability. Missed a decent chance to make it 3-2 before half time. Gains a point for a great block late on.
Hart 6 - First 30 mins, I'd probably give him a 2. Fair play that he dug in and improved massively. Great cross for Cox's first goal and threatened going forwards in the second half.

Kightly 4- Anonymous early on, a bit better after half time. Still letting us down considering what he's capable of. Half arsed tracking back, left Hart exposed badly early in.
Dieng 6 - Crap up to 3-0, but pulled his finger out in the second half, nice through ball for Cox's third.
Mantom 4 - Poor. Early on he looked like one of the few who was trying. However 'safety first' sideways passes aren't good enough. For me, our only natural captain is Cox, Mantom has none of a captain's qualities. Come on Powell, grow a pair and make the change.
McLaughlin 5 - Anonymous first half, better after he break. Annoys me with a lack of work rate (much like Kightly).

Humphrys 5 - No service, I hope the injury's not bad.
Cox 9 - Cemented his status as a Southend legend today. Absolutely immense.:LoyalSupporter:

Subs
Klass 7 - Really impressed me. The enforced change with Humphrys going off seemed to be the turning point. Nice, neat passing, did far more than Mantom, will Powell have the balls to drop his 'captain'?
Hutchinson 6 - Chased every loose ball, played his part.
Wabo - Not enough time to rate, I was surprised he came on in front of Kelman, perhaps Wabo will have a chance to stake a claim.

I'm sorry, confidence has nothing to do with the excuse of a header he attempted for their second goal and the continuous poor set pieces.

He can at least try and put himself about, instead of strolling around the midfield!!

Sorry OBL, it might seem harsh but he's no captain, I'm hoping the boos hammer that point home to Powell. Giving him the armband is one if Powell's worst decisions IMO. Who knows, relieving him of the responsibility might spark an improvement in form?

I don't disagree with that either, he's not a captain, Oxley was Powell's choice - rightly or wrongly, so he was forced to find another. I believe Coker had said he didn't want it as well.

Fair point, right now Cox is our best option IMO, I think he'd relish it.

Got home 6.30 pm.

Seven hours of driving in total, and after 30 mins of the game I was thinking it wasn't perhaps going to be the best of days.

But, the beauty of football is that you never know what is going to happen next - if we did then we wouldn't go.

Cox's performance today was perhaps in the top five performances I've ever seen from a Southend player in 48 years of watching, made even more special by the fact that many of his team mates were average at best. Simply wow.

Thank you Coxy for that 87th minute moment of sticking one to Pompey, not my most treasured club for some very good reasons. And the bell-ringer went quiet. So sweet.

Spare a thought for the for the old boy who sits just to the right near the back of the greens.

He was hunched over struggling up the stairs with his carrier bag and walking stick, looking surprised there were so many people in his way. After all he had arrived at his normal time of 2:15.

I know Sky don't give a toss but would be nice if the club could contact/ring some of the old timers in future.
