Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-2 Bristol City

Everyone 10s

listened on blues world and it sounded deserved too. incredible that Sturrock has got a team playing together with confidence and belief. So glad our strikers are getting goals too. On a real high about Southend now after such a low this summer... bring it on!

Yes indeed .................when was the last team we scored three, with strikers getting them all?

The whole team played a blinder, a fantastic game to watch tonight.

For me, Coulghan was a rock at the back, Sturrock held the ball up very well and brought the midfield into play and Paterson led the line brilliantly. Josh Simpson was pushed to Right back and was amazing and Barker on the opposite side, well, we need to get him for a longer period. Granty and Easton were both fabulous as well, just a super team performance. Cracking cross from Spencer after just coming on and pleased that Corr got his head to it to get his scoring off the mark, he needed that goal.

I haven't seen a Southend team play with that much effort, enterprise and sheer determination in a long long time. It was a joy to watch

Forget that!..........it happened at Bristol Rovers last year (although we lost) and at home to the O's with a Barnard hat-trick.......anyway it's always good to see strikers doing what they are supposed to!

Also happened against Hartlepool last season, Laurent and Barnard (2) scored, and Brighton, O'Donovan, Barnard and Laurent.

Feels good just reading that!

Blair Sturrock 8 - Good on the ball, bought the ball down like he was on his home in the garden with nobody around him, brilliant touch. Skipped away from nearly all of their players when challenged. Descent vision, played some great balls out to the wing and over the top. The only thing he did wrong was when he won the ball and had to run at three of their defenders with no support, where he didn't really have any options and sort of bobbled into nothing. And got a descent clap off the pitch at the end.

Superb, best Southend match and performance I've seen for a long time. A really great team effort, we showed great character to twice come from behind, particularly after such an early goal. The boys at the back were excellent, Coughlan won absoloutely everything in the air and bullied their number 9 out of the game. He got done for pace a few times but that's going to happen and the others covered him well when that happened. Morris could be criticised for their first goal but otherwise dealt with everything. Barker and Simpson were quality, both read the game very well and look like very shrewd loan signings. Grant and Easton worked their socks off in the middle and Grant was only prevented from scoring twice by two very good saves from Gerken. And it's great to have some wingers who run at people and cross the ball. 2 of our 3 goals came from superb crosses into the box. If you put those kind of balls in, people like Corr and Paterson will score eventually. A mention to Blair Sturrock too who did a lot of good play before being subbed. Zaaboub was the only disappointment, he got involved though. We outplayed a Championship side for large parts of this match. Great to see all the players clapping the fans and pumping their fists at the end and big credit to Sturrock, particularly for his substitions. I'm a happy man tonight.

Go along with that completely, cannot remember the last time i saw a Southend team play with such passion.Well done Paul Sturrock and the lads.

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE LITTLE DIAMONDS PLAYED IMMENSELY.

Grant almost died in the end. He has so much stamina it is unreal and had a few cracking efforts on goal.
Scott Spencer was great when he came on, I didn't think he would be much on the wing, but his cross for our second was perfect.
Easton was solid and is better than Maher...
Prosser was a star in the last 15 winning everything in the air.
The two fullbacks where brill.
Coughlan is as solid as a rock.
There is too much to talk about.

Brilliant.

Wow. Superb stuff, it really really was. Excellent work-rate and commitment and some really good football played by the boys for 110 minutes! Cant quite get over it all!

What a night !
OK, we were definitely outplayed for the first twenty minutes, but after that it was the Shrimper Show. Had it not been for Gerken, it would have been five or six ! We just dont know we are beaten ..

Morris - (7) - From what I can see must take the blame for the opener, but was in control for the rest of the match.
Simpson - (8) - Superb stand in performance at right back, and got forward well in the final third of the match
Barker - (8) - Got caught out once or twice but other than that was cool calm and collected. Took nasty poke in eye
Coughlan - (8) - Won everything in the air, but on the ground was outpaced and outbattled one too many time for me
Prosser - (9) - Who said this fella couldnt play? He was imperious
Soares - (6) - Not sure what all the fuss is about. Doesnt beat his man, and his crossing and freekicks are poor
Grant - (10) - Epic performance. Could have had a hat-trick but for Gerken, and ran the show
Easton - (8) - Played second fiddle to Grant but did everything you could ask of him
Zabouub - (6) - Didnt really get into the match and was subbed. Probably lacking in fitness
Sturrock - (9) - Class act. His touch and hold up play was brilliant. Worked hard and surprised to see him subbed early
Paterson - (9) - Took his penalty well, scored a corking header, and worked his socks off. Confidence is soaring

Corr - (9) - What a difference from saturday. His all round play and aerial ability was brilliant. The equaliser was brilliantly taken
Spencer (8) - Made a big difference on the right, never stopped working, and put in the cross of the night !
Hall - (7) - Did well, despite lacking fitness, and his excellentlty looped cross made the winner

Ref - (8) - Didnt put a foot wrong in my opinion

For a team that can only afford to open one stand, and has had to turn off the scoreboard, we really shouldnt underestimate this result. It is almost a miracle we can win this game so soon after changing the whole team around and lifting the embargo.

On my phone on the way back from the match so may make a few smelling (ahem) mistakes.

Was in South Upper so the atmosphere was awful till the end but expected. Got to shout at gherkin so great!

First thing great result I felt a bit distant at stockport as i didn't know the players, but tonight loved it due to being able to hear them talking and the spirit was remarkable.

First brizzle goal was dreadful not a free kick and Morris was unsighted should haver saved it really as it was straight down his throat. Great pen from Matty. Second brizzle effort, Simpson at right back got turned easily and was a simple ball accross the box and a deflection took it over Morris. Equaliser was class from spencer turned the left back inside out and put in a class ball whipped in amd it was on a plate for Corr, he wont miss those! Winner was great work from our flying left winger Hall who took on his man and whipped in a beautiful cross excellently headed back past the keeper into the vacant near post.

Overall, superb effort looked the better side throughout. Tremendous spirt. The ball stayed on the floor a lot more which i liked.

Special mentions to Prosser some fantastic headers and last ditch tackles. Quality.

Paterson has that quality and if you cant see it you are a fool, chuffed for him.

Rest were excellent and played with heart and skill.

My Southend United again. Thanks boys loved every second!

Im not used to this winning feeling! UTB!

What an excellent game, and well deserved victory for the boys.

Morris - 6 - Did ok, give him the benefit of the doubt for the first, and had no chance with the second.
Simpson - 8 - Out of position, was excellent.
Coughlan - 8 - Did well, brilliant in the air, great talker. Got left horrible exposed once.
Prosser - 9 - I was worried, as many has said he was toilet - simply not true, had a brilliant game, and his decision making was extrodinary.
Barker - 8 - Very good display.

Soares - 7.5 - Was impressed, but struggled to get involved at times.
Easton - 8.5 - Great captains performance.
Grant - 10 - Words can't explain how good he was, this club obviously means a lot to him!
Zabouub - 6 - I was a bit disappointed, didn't look up before playing passes.

Sturrock - 7.5 - Played well, few dodgy passes though.
Paterson - 9 - Worked so hard, and scored twice.

Subs:

Spencer - 8 - Great impact with the time he has, wonderful cross for the equaliser.
Corr - 7.5 - Impressive from the big man, good headed goal.
Hall - 7 - Looks lively, look forward to seeing more. Can't tackle.

Paul Sturrock - 9 - Good tactics, good shape, good subs.

QUOTE]

I have to agree with these almost to the exact score.

Unbelievable Team effort - I truly can't remember a Southend Team working so hard for each other - Grant was immense and must have run almost twice as far as anyone else on the pitch (bit worried that Championship sides will be looking at him pre close of the Window on this form).

Paul Sturrock got his subs spot on and noticed that we changed from 442 to 433 quite regualrly in the game - just how good is that!!!

The only scores I would not agree with were:

Morris - I'd give him a 6 - should have done better with the first - a great shot but straight at him and he does not command his box at all
Zaboub - a 5 - and I feel generous at that. He had a shocker but credit to him is that he didn't hide but kept trying
Soares - a 5 possibly 6 as you stated above - I don't think he is as good as he seems to think he is - looked better with Spencer out there.

Still, these 3 minor criticisms are me being really picky as this was a great night, great performance and even Blair won me over as he worked his nuts off and had a great game.

Off to bed happy now!!
