Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2, Oxford United 1

Penalty claims taken from the Oxford Site

Add in two very loud penalty claims, the first for a foul on Worley as he homed in on a Leven free kick and the second for handball and it was all Oxford.

Handball, never in a million years, foul, maybe as the guy missed a header from about 4 yards out, and I did think at the time he may have been pulled back, but it was nothing blatant.

Gilbert - 6 - at fault for the Oxford goal and was caught out of position on a few other occasions. Otherwise decent.

UTB!

I'm not saying Gilbert had a good game (though I don't think he was as bad as some people on here are suggesting) but he wasn't the only one at fault; it was their right back who scored and Leonard is the one who should have been picking up. However as a full-back you still shouldn't let a player go past you.

With regards my views on the game, I agree with most here, thought Oxford looked very good and we probably stole 3 points, but we've had them stolen from us before. However at the end of the day its about scoring the most and we did that

BTW someone needs to change the clock on these forums, don't you know they went back last week :stunned:

Cracking game and against the best side i've seen at RH this season. Last season we would have crumbled, but they dug deep and ground out a victory. A mixed bag with my ratings this week.

Daniels 9 MOTM - If it wasn't for his heroics in the 1st half we would have been dead and buried
Clohessy 7 - Got forward well
Gilbert 5 - Poor. Stop shouting at others around you when you are to blame...
Barker 6.5 - Ok. Solid
Phillips 7 - Has been a rock alongside Barker and chips in with goals
Leonard 6.5 - No frills. Does his job well. That's good enough for me
Ferdinand 5 - Not his best game, by far. Should have kept it simple in the engine room
Timlin 7 - Class act. Was first to everything around him
Hall 8 - He can create something from nothing and did that again today.
Harris 6 - Definately lost a yard of pace, but his experience will be essential throughout this campaign
Dickinson 6 - Just doesn't use his height and strength. Worked harder in the 2nd half, mind.
Subs : Grant 7 - Looked really good and a cert for Tuesday and next Sat
Sturrock 6 - Always puts in a shift. An ideal replacement at that stage of the game.

Ref - 5. Constantly got decisions wrong for both sides.
Atmosphere 9 - Plenty of away supporters to banter with. Went into South Upper this week and it was buzzing.

oxford bossed the midfield, bit risky from sturrock to play two youngsters (kane + leonard) in such a big game, kane had his worst game in a blues shirt that ive seen, but we have the greatest habit in football the winning habit. Halls goal was sheer class and this from a geezer who had been 5h***ing and puking the night before, we simply cant hang on to him come january, 300-500k should get ron moist. Oxford should have won today imo but when your top it all goes your way. Phillips gets big praise not just for today but the season so far. Great atmosphere today wooooooooooo

Does anyone know why we didn't have Bentley on the bench. appologies if it has been posted elsewhere, but I haven't read it.

I personally thought Timlin was excellent he played some lovely passes and in the second half he gave it his all but still wondering what he was trying to do when one on one. Daniels was fantastic only reason we won was because of him. The result was harsh as Oxford pummelled us and played brilliant but thats why we are top of the league because we can still beat teams when they are on the top of their game.

Tangent: I'd be devastated at 300-500k for Hall. Much more value than that in the lad.

im struggling to think of a league two player going on for over 500k, lambert maybe to southampton???
back on track I forgot to praise the keeper today, easily MOtM for us and put simply the main reason we won today

Oxford have the best first half record in the division, and one of the worst in the second half. For the first hour they chased and harried and domintated, then they started to tire and we got on top. We didn't play well, but the goal apart didn't look like conceeding in the second half - and had a few great chances to score ourselves.

Thought Daniels and Timlin were superb, Leonard played well, Clohessy and the 2 centre backs were great second half. Ferdinand was cack though and was the source of many of our problems first half. Grant was excellent when he came on.

There was a little bit of trouble brewed after the game by the 'segregation' gates next to the east stand / prospects car park. I didn't see how it all started, but on the whole it was a dozen or so Oxford fans trying to charge through the gate, but it was very sad to see a couple of idiots on our side try to wind them up, when there were kids around to get trampled on if they did get through those gates.

It must be difficult for those not in attendance to understand how we can be poor yet win 10 out of 11, 2 points clear at the top, 7 points clear of 4th and 9 points clear of 8th.

At home, one day soon we will actually play and take someone to pieces properly.

Today, Oxford were a good side that worked amazingly hard, never giving us a second on the ball. But the ball ran for them a bit in the first half and they didn't capitalise on their superiority. We could have been 4-0 down at half time. Daniels has made 2 good and 2 excellent saves, they've missed 2 one-on-ones and had 2 good penalty shouts. From the East Blacks we were amazed they weren't given. One appeared to be a clear tug back as their player was going to take a free header 6 yards out and then seconds later as we are trying to clear Barker chest/shoulders the ball clear that looked like more arm than anything else.. If that had been against us we would have been going ballistic.

The explanations re Hall/Kalala explain a lot.

Daniels kept us in it but his kicking was way off. Far too heavy and not overly accurate.

Credit by the bucketload to both full backs who stopped so many crosses, which is a primary part of their job. Barker was superb. Phillips missed a few ground balls but we got away with them. He made up for it with the opener. If Oxford had taken half of their chances they would have been out of sight. Perhaps they're not such a great side, just a hard working one.

We were outfought in midfield until Grant came on. Hall was anonymous save the assist and wondergoal, Kane was just downright poor (although made really good tackles to win the ball on 2 occasions but then promptly lost it again), Timlin got better as the game progressed but had a poor first half and Leonard battled well and was consistent... but he gives us balance when the midfield is on song which today in the first half they weren't.

Harris and Dickinson were starved of supply but no-one can fault their work rate.

In the second half we were better and could have had 3 or 4 ourselves. A mention for Oxfords goal as they had the ball for about a minute before the cross came in. You knew it was coming.

Also a mention for "that" miss by Timlin which was comical. Hopefully Swindon base their entire views on his future around that and we get to keep him.

Oxford fans supported their team well to make a great atmosphere in an incredibly enjoyable match.

What i love about us this season is how we react to conceding goals. We were battered for first hour and as others have said the equaliser was always coming...they celebrated like they'd won the Champions League, but we just shrugged it off and went up the other end and scored again. As has been said. We were second best for 90% of the game, but worked hard kept going and got the points....all good.

Daniels : 8 MOM : fantastic, kept us in it in first half - the 2 sharp low saves in particular were top class
Clohessy : 7 Best I've seen him for a while. solid in defence and got forward well when Oxford pushed on in second half
Gilbert : 6 I'm not a big fan, but thought he did Ok today..can't really criticize any of the back for after a defensive performance like todays.
Barker : 8 Impressive, commanding as usual
Phillips : 8 Slightly less in control than Barker, but another vital goal so I'll mark them the same
Ferdinand : 3 Dreadful. I like Kane, but today he looked well off the pace and nothing worked for him.
Timlin : 6 Showed some quality but struggled to get a grip, improved second half when Oxford changed their style
Hall : 7 Quiet in the main, but involved in both goals again.
Leonard 7: Thought he was excellent today worked really hard and seemed to grow in confidence in the second half and was more of an attacking force despite playing on his less favoured side. Don't underestimate the balance he gives the midfield. Was gutted his late header hit the post as I had him at 25/1 to be last goalscorer.
Dickinson 6 : Worked hard, better in second half, but pretty ineffective
Harris : 4 really not his day
