Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-1 Tranmere Rovers

1-1 would have been fair considering how poor we were in the second half but I'm not complaining

Barrett 7.5 did well but nothing special good defensively
Francis 7 some good croosses poor at set pieces better at right back
Macca 9 MOTM great performance back to old form great tackles and distracted their cm for goal
JFC 8 did well good defensively but not so going forward again
Moussa 8 should be in the middle got involved and tracked back
Theo 8 did well worried their defence good goal
Dougie 7 not as good as normal didn't deserve to concede a pen but good passing
Subs
Laurent 6.5 hardly touched it

Mildenhall - 8

Good in the air, dived the right way for the penalty and shaked off injury.

Sankofa - 7

Looked solid at RB

Dervite - 8

Classy defender, dealt with everything that came his way

Clarke - 7

Some slip ups, but overall a good performace

Barrett - 7

Looked ok at LB but scrappy at times

Francis - 6

Crosses from corners and free kicks were poor.

Christophe - 7

Looking good in midfield, didnt do too much to impact on the game

McCormack - 9

Very good tackle in the first half and played well

Moussa - 8

Played very well at LM considering he's right footed

Theo Robinson - 9 Dan of The Match's Man of The Match

Looked very good upfront and scored the first goal

Dougie Freedman - 5

Poor performance today and not p to expectations

Referee - Minus 3

Absolutely appauling and recieved a bit of abuse from the likes of myself and Shrimp with a Limp

Ref was terrible today. Savage should have been sent off, no questions. Can't understand Tilson's decision to bring Robinson and not Freedman off (unless there was an injury), but was glad to see Laurent back.

Deserved victory even if we did leave it 'til three kicks before the final whistle...

Mildenhall 7 - Did what was asked and almost got a hand to the penalty. Slightly wayward kicking though today and continually struggled to stay on his feet.
Sankofa 7.5 - Looks better and better and has made the position his own.
Dervite 7.5 - Strong and composed. Would love to keep him after the loan runs out.
Clarke 7.5 - Looked after Savage very well. A couple of decent balls forward, a couple not so decent.
Barrett 7.5 - Defence looks stronger with Adam here in my opinion.
Francis 7.5 - Excellent performance. Great getting forward and defended well from the midfield. Fantastic perseverance and pinpoint cross which led to the first goal - the sort of creativity from the wing we've been missing for some time. Marked down to 7.5 only because of several poor corners. Apart from that, great game from Franno.
Macca 8 - Solid all-action performance. Not quite back to his best yet for me and still too many wayward balls, but was always hustling. My man of the match.
JFC 7 - Quietly effective as usual but could and probably should have been more adventurous when in possession.
Moussa 8 - Didn't put a foot wrong all game. Received the ball well, put his foot in when needed and always provided an outlet when under pressure. Pushed Macca for man of the match.
Robinson 8 - Deceptively strong with good skills. Well taken goal, composed finish.
Freedman 7
- Always came looking for the ball as you'd expect but a couple of poor balls let him down. Conceded the penalty that almost cost us the game, but laid the ball off superbly to Betsy to regain us the two lost points. Can't wait until he's back to full fitness.

SUBS

Laurent 6
- Barely touched the ball. Obviously coming back from injury but looked extremely lazy for me.
Betsy 9 - Brought on to change the game. Got on the end of a cross to steal the points. Difficult to see how he could have done more.

Ref 6 - A 7.5 because he always looked to let the game flow, but losing marks for the two opportunities to send off Bas Savage which he bottled. If the first was a booking, it had to be a red as it seemed to be for a raised hand. And if he had to call their captain over for the potential second, then the first booking had to have been running through his mind - which means to me only failed to caution the player because he'd already been booked. That's not in the laws of the game.

Mildenhall 7 - Not a great deal to do and was unlucky with the pen.
Sankofa 7.5 - Getting better every week, just needs a consistent run in the team.
Dervite 7.5 - Wins a lot in the air, Puts his foot on the ball and has got a good delivery.
Clarke 7 - Was unlucky not to score, played one good ball out to Moussa in the second half but other than that his distribution is shocking.
Barrett 7 - Playing at LB allows him to get forward more, pulled out a few skills aswell.
Francis 7.8 - Slagged off earlier in the season but has been much, much better in recent weeks, although today his corners were pretty poor.
Macca 8.5 - Looked like the old Macca again, great challenges and was unlucky not to score.
Christophe 6.5 - Thought he was poor today, could pass water in the first 20 minutes.
Moussa 8 - The loan spell at Wycombe has done him the world of good, a different player now. Moooouse.
Robinson 7 - Took his goal well but was lucky someone got a touch on his first effort to allow him the second strike as it was woeful.
Freedman 7 - Not the best performance but was very unlucky to concede the penalty and put in a superb cross for the winner.

Laurent 6 - Didn't really have time to do anything.
Betsy 7 - Admittedly i've been one of his critics but came to the rescue today.

Ref 3

Mildenhall 7 - Didnt have too much to do with his hands, got close to the penalty

Sankofa 7 - good getting forward teamed up well with Francis

Dervite 7.5 - solid at the back never backs out from anything

Clarke 7.5 - good performance gave good support in defence

Barrett 7.5 - did well but nothing special good defensively

Francis 7 - getting back to the Francis we enjoy watching, gave some decent runs

Macca 9 - great performance, went from strength to strength

JFC 8 - defended well and let macca do the business in attack

Moussa 7 - nice dribbling but a lot better in the middle

Theo 8 - hard working, could be a vital part in attack, good and well deserved goal, always wanted ball

Dougie 7 - not as good as the dougie we have seen but it shows that if you keep him on the field he will do the business, nice assist

Subs
Laurent 6.5 - Good to see him get some time on the pitch, not much to do

Betsy 8 - Needed a goal to put the poor performances behind him, well played to him, has made col u a massive game!

Because then Freedman wouldn't of been there to put in the cross for the winner

I thought Laurent made an important contribution actually. It was his headed flick-on that sent Freedman away for the goal

Mildenhall - 6.5- Made some good saves and was unlucky to miss the penalty, did well to play on after getting a knock
Sankofa - 6.5 - Didn't really notice him but did some good runs down the flank overlapping the midfielder and putting in one or two good balls.
Dervite - 7.8 - Very good today, went in for everything and always came out with the ball, cool and calm.
Barrett - 6 - Didn't do much
Clarke - 7.5 - Did well , linked up with Dervite well and made some good clearances
Francis - 8.3 - Amazing first half performance but was abject in the second
Macca - 9.3 - Did well to withstand and not react to Savage, shows he's changed a lot. Brilliant Tackling and passing
JFC - 6.9 - Linked up with Macca well
Moussa - 7.3 - Dribbling was good, got forward and tried his best. Good prospect
Theo - 8.2 - Excellent start for him and deserved more
Dougie - 5.8 - Did well for the first 10 minutes but slipped in and out and had some poor passes in the second half.

Betsy - 9.0 - Delighted for him, liked him a lot and should threaten for a first team place next game.
Laurent - 7.5 - Key in the build up and did well for the little while he was on

Bas Savage - 0.2 - Woeful performance but comedy kept it in positives.

Referee - 5.7 - Did well in the first half and let the game flow but should've sent Savage off and afterwards just fell apart.

Mildenhall 7 - Not a great deal to do and was unlucky with the pen.

Ref 3

Me and the guy's sitting around me were all raving about Christophe, he was everywhere and won the ball back so many times and closed down the opposition. Only negative in a fantastic display was that he was not so good when attacking.

My ratings - they seem to be different from the norm on here today, but it's how I saw it!

Mildy - 7. Did ok with the little he had to deal with

Sankofa - 7. Thought he had his best game going forward, although left his defensive duties a bit

Barrett - 6. Defending OK, but got dragged into the middle a few times. Not much happened when he went forward today.

Dorian - 8. Defending was class, but a few too many long balls second half for me

Clarke - 8. See dorian

Moussa - 7. Great on the ball, but he needs to try & add a bit of penetration. Some good tackles.

Francis - 7.5. Great cross for first goal and gave the tranny left back the runaround first half. Quieter in the second

Macca - 8. Great tackle first half seemed to give him confidence back. Did well not to react as half the tranmere team spent the whole match trying to get something from him

Jeff - 8. Won everything in midfield. At times it took 3 men to wrestle him to try & get the ball back. Creatively he didn't do too well, but thats not his bag

Dougie - 8. Some fantastic flicks and passes in the final third. Set Robinson away two or 3 times and great work for the second goal. Such a quality player

Robinson - 6.5. Took his goal well - showed a lot of composure as his first shot was going for a throw on. He also used his pace well getting in behind the back four many times but the majority of the time he made poor decisions when there.

Subs
Laurent 7 - tried to get involved and managed a few useful touches. Think the bobbly pitch didn't suit his style of play

Betsy 8 - he scored!

Ref - No rating. Where do we get them from? I would guess he got 95% of the decisions right, but the big 3 or 4 were horribly wrong. Never a penalty. Savage was savage and should have been sent off at least twice (at least the ref didn't fall for his diving). And I also thought the 13 (Edds?) should have been seen yellow earlier than he did for persistant fouling - and then red when he brought down dougie as we were breaking (when the ref thought enough was enough)

Spot on, both with your ratings and comments.

Macca was frankly amazing. Not one foul! Have to admit Dougie didnt have his best game, thought Moussa had a good game as well. Should have taken chance to go 2 up but delighted with another last minute winner!

I hope Macca continues his form until the end of the season. Moussa did well going forward and coming back. Anyone bring a partner? My fellow STH did and she didn't even have a clue what was going on! I laughed when someone infront shouted "Barrett, Why did your dad a lino?". Made Barrett laugh!

! Have to admit Dougie didnt have his best game, !

His through balls were the only cutting edge we had and he set up the winner.

The guy oozes quality and whilst he may have better games he still played a huge part in our attacking play.

Macca was all over the place , best game of the season so far . If he could actually pass to a team mate he would be a truly great player ,but then again that would probably mean he would be too good for us so i guess we should be thankfull he cant .

Thought overall, we played well today, and hats off the the lads, they carried on right to the final whistle to score what is becoming a very frequent late goal.

Interestingly enough, I thought today summed up where our problem in the team lays - the lack of a genuinely creative midfielder. I thought we completely bossed the first half, and without knowing, I'd imagine the possession stats make healthy reading from our point of view. We over run their midfield, and at times, they were camped in their own half as they just couldn't get out. But during this period, we never really opened them up, or created anything that clear cut, apart from the goal, which was all down to the tenacity of Franno.

With a Mark Gower or a Nicky Bailey in the team, I'm fairly confident we could have gone in leading 2/3-0 at half time, and that would have been a fair reflection. Of course, that's not going to happen this season now, and on the evidence of today and the Bristol Rovers match, it seems we have enough in terms of grit and determination to pick up the necessary points to remain clear of the drop zone.

These last two games have shown that the lads are totally up for the fight, and 100% committed to the cause, and to be fair, we do have quality within our ranks - Freedman when on the ball is a class act, and Robinson is a real threat - someone with pace is giving our team a whole new dynamic we haven't had this season, and we can now hit teams on the break.

Finally, I know it sounds like a stuck record, but wanted to give another shout out for JFC today - he really is everywhere, and while not the most elegant on the ball, he is a power house in that midfield, and seems to be improving with every game.

Too right! That's our problem we lack a finishing edge. I think Macca and Jeff are starting to develop a good partneship and are both class players. I like Moussa and I hope we try to mould him into a player like Gower, I can see him chipping in with a good few goals a season in the future but he isn't doing that at the moment, however it is his First First Team proper season and am liking what I see of him so far.

Hats off to Francis today, I've been less than impressed with his performances this season but gave a good solid work load in today and started showing glimpses of the player from last season however his set pieces aren't great. That's what we really do need... someone who can take a Corner and a Freekick. Set pieces are vital in this league and we need to either bring someone into solve this problem or start working on it on the training ground!
